Sweet's highly decorative guide to the cultivation of the Rock-rose or Cistus. Originally issued bimonthly in parts, each plate shows a single variety of cistus or rock-rose and is accompanied by text giving a taxonomic description and instructions for the plant's cultivation. First edition, 4to (223 x 170 mm), vi, 352pp., folding table, 77 hand-coloured engraved plates, after drawings by the author, without the additional leaf p.353 which was not available at the time of the original publication of the book but issued later, occasional ink and pencil annotations and marginalia, some light spotting and toning to text but plates clean and fresh, bookplate (re-laid) and owner inscription of William Borrer, Henfield, Sussex, front hinge reinforced, nicely bound in recent half calf, marbled boards, red morocco lettering piece, compartments tooled in gilt. Provenance: William Borrer (1781-1862), his copy with most likely his annotations. Borrer was an esteemed English botanist, who contributed much of his extensive knowledge of British plants to many botanical works of the period and pioneered British Lichenology, culminating in his 'Specimen of a Lichenographia Brittanica' in 1839, along with Dawson Turner; later from the library of Alan Roy Perry, formerly at the Botany Department at the National Library of Wales. Opera sulla botanica floreale ''horticulture d'agrément'' (nella prefazione) nata in quegli anni, che ebbe immediato esteso successo. Cm. 25, pp. (32) 303 (1) 296 (56). Con 12 tavole nitidamente incise in rame e ripiegate fuori testo. Legatura strettamente coeva in cart. alla rustica con nervi passanti e titoli ms. al dorso. Un piccolo timbro nobiliare alla bas del frontespizio. Esemplare particlarmente genuino, fresco ed in ottimo stato di conservazione.
In folio; due opere in un volume: (8), 396, (28) pp. e 143, (9) pp. Bella legatura seicentesca in piena pergamena con titolo in oro al dorso che si presenta a sei nervi, qualche lieve segno del tempo ma nel complesso in buone condizioni di conservazione. Bella marca tipografica di Guillaume Rouillé (1545-1589) al frontespizio di ogni volume. Alcune pagine leggermente ed uniformemente brunite a causa alla qualità della carta, ininfluente. Un leggerissimo alone ininfluente al margine esterno bianco delle ultime 10 carte del secondo volume e nel complesso ambedue le opere si presentano in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Testatine, iniziali e finalini xilografici. Bell’edizioni stampate da Rouillé di queste due celebri opere del grande scrittore, medico e filosofo originario di Riva del Garda, Giulio Cesare Scaligero, latinizzato in Julius Caesar Scaliger (1484-1558). Di origine italiana, trascorse in Francia parte della sua vita, e la parte più fruttuosa della sua carriera. A dispetto del suo atteggiamento arrogante e incline alla polemica, era alta la sua reputazione tra i contemporanei, che lo giudicavano così distinto nel suo sapere e talento, che, secondo Jacques Auguste de Thou, nessuno degli antichi poteva essere collocato sopra di lui, e che l’età in cui visse non presentò nessun sapiente paragonabile a lui. Nelle proprie note biografiche, Scaligero si spaccia per un discendente del casato dei Della Scala (che furono, per 150 anni, i signori di Verona) e si dice nato nell’anno 1484 a Rocca di Riva, sulle rive del Lago di Garda. Era forse figlio di Niccolò della Scala, a sua volta figlio di Guglielmo.Quando era dodicenne, il suo protettore, l’imperatore Massimiliano I d’Asburgo, lo nominò tra i suoi paggi. Rimase per diciassette anni al servizio dell’imperatore, distinguendosi prima come soldato e poi come capitano. Ma non dimenticava di coltivare né le lettere, nelle quali aveva avuto come precettori alcuni tra i più eminenti studiosi del tempo, né le arti, che aveva studiato con considerevole successo sotto la direzione di Albrecht Dürer. Nel 1512 prese parte alla battaglia di Ravenna. Ma poco in verità è provato della vita dello Scaligero fino al 1525 quando divenne medico personale del vescovo di Agen, in Francia. Definiva i suoi studi classici come un gradevole rilassamento da compiti più severi. Qualsiasi siano state le sue vere faccende nei suoi primi 40 anni di vita, sicuramente queste lo resero un osservatore accurato e ravvicinato, e lo avevano reso edotto di molti fenomeni curiosi e poco noti, che aveva pienamente registrato in una tra le più tenaci memorie della storia. E’ celebre anche per aver in un certo modo anticipato il metodo induttivo. I due trattati qui presentati sono considerati fra i suoi più originali. In essi metteva a frutto le proprie dirette esperienze nel campo della botanica ed erboristeria, esperienze sia maturate nella sperimentazione diretta sia nella ricerca erudita di descrizioni di piante in fonti letterarie e artistiche, tanto classiche che moderne in parte mutate da Teofrasto ed Aristotele. In the first edition of Flora Lapponica 1737 Linnaeus's ideas about nomenclature and classification were first used in a practical way making that the first proto-modern flora. Due volumi di cm. 16, pp. (48) 442 (2); 443-866 (80). Centinaia di illustrazioni botaniche su legno. Legatura in piena pelle, dorso a nervi con ricchi fregi e titoli in oro su tasselli. Esemplare genuino e ben conservato. Celebre catalogazione botanica che fu pubblicata per oltre un secolo e che fu acreditata all'opera di diversi autori. Cfr. Pritzel 10768.
Cm. 29,5, pp. (4) 400. Con una bella tavola f.t. incisa in rame. Legatura coeva in caronato alla rustica con nervi passanti. Un alone chiaro che interessa i piatti della legatura e, quasi impercettibilmente le prime carte, peraltro ben conservato. Cfr. Pritzel, 70 e Buzzati (Bibliografia bellunese, 441) che così s'esprime: "L'opera è divisa in due parti; la prima tratta De Herbis, la seconda De Arboris et Fructibus... Il libro è raro siccome la maggior parte degli esemplari andò distrutta dalle fiamme...". L'Agosti (Belluno 1715-1786) si dedicò profondamente alla botanica, fino ad essere acclamato fra i più reputati illustratori della flora della sua regione. La presente è la sua opera principale e vi si individua un tentativo di efficace riforma del metodo descrittivo del Tournefort.

Frontespizio in rosso e nero con impresa tipografica centrale, testate, capolettera e 16 belle incisioni nel testo tra cui l'entrata di Clovis a Bruxelles e due belle raffigurazion del giglio. Semplice legatura ottocentesca in cartoncino azzurro d'attesa. Una piccola gora marginale alle ultime 3 carte, qualche leggera fioritura, peraltro esemplare genuino e ben conservato. Interessante edizione originale di quest'opera monografica sul giglio nel suo significato, simbolico, botanico ed araldico.
