1777AQ30003Bath: Printed by R. Crutwell for the Author 1777. 6 5-55pp 1. Modern green wrappers. Book-label of J. O. Edwards to verso of upper wrapper. Small marginal worm-track running throughout blank lower margin of leaf F1 shaved ink-stamps of Merton House to terminal leaf scattered spotting. The sole edition of the first published work of historian and poet Richard Polwhele 1760-1838. Born at Truro Cornwall Polwhele began to write poetry when about twelve years old. His juvenile production received praise most notably from satirist John Wolcot bap. 1738 d. 1819 then a resident of Truro. The flattery of friends encouraged him to publish The Fate of Lewellyn under the moniker of 'a young gentleman of Truro School' whereupon a critic for the Monthly Review quipped that the master of the school should have kept it in manuscript. The volume did nothing to further his career indeed it gave him the reputation of an unpromising poet - a reputation he was fortunately able to shake off with later efforts. ESTC T109007. First edition. Quarto. Printed by R. Crutwell, for the Author unknown

Magnificent example, rich in shades and well contrasted, printed on contemporary watermarked laid paper (circle surmounted by trefoil), trimmed at the marginal line, overall in excellent condition. The Varie opere di Prospettiua is a collection of 72 mostly large-format plates documenting Ferdinando Galli Bibiena’s early activity as a designer of theatrical scenery and ephemeral architecture. It was assembled by Pietro Giovanni Abbati (fl. 1683-1745), a pupil of Ferdinando Bibiena during his tenure as “Pittore di Corte” to the Farnese Dukes of Parma, in collaboration with Carlo Antonio Buffagnotti, an industrious printmaker from Bologna. An obscure printseller, Giacomo Pelegrino Longhi, was responsible for the reissue, which incorporates eleven prints of scenery designed by Bibiena and executed by Abbati for spectacles performed in Turin in 1699. Qualche ossidazione, altrimenti in buone condizioni. Bibliografia Margaret F. MacDonald, Grischka Petri, Joanna Meacock James McNeill Whistler: The Etchings, a catalogue raisonné, University of Glasgow , 2012, cat. no. 146. Transfer lithograph, 1896, drawn on white transfer paper with a grained-stone texture; only state; printed in black ink on the cream laid paper used for The Art Journal edition. In the stone at left: butterfly monogram. The child who posed for this engaging portrait was the three - or four-year - old daughter of Whistler’s longtime friend, David Croal Thomson. Thomson had taken an interest in the artist’s work for many years and had organized the very successful retrospective of his paintings at the Goupil Gallery in the spring of 1892. He had served as editor of The Art Journal since November 1892 and had already published one of Whistler’s lithographs, Nursemaids: “Les Bonnes du Luxembourg” in the December 1894 issue of the periodical. Whistler probably made the transfer drawing of Evelyn when he visited the Thomson family in January 1896 at their home outside London. Some foxing, otherwise good condition. Bibliografia Margaret F. 1888253042Farmington Ct. 1888. 3pp. Folded 4to sheet. Old fold lines. Near fine. 3pp. Folded 4to sheet. Letter written by Sarah Porter founder of Miss Porter's School for Girls to a friend and possibly former student regretfully declining an invitation to her wedding. Miss Porter studied privately with Yale Professors. and her brother Noah later became President of Yale. She was an opponent of women's suffrage.
She notes in this letter that affairs at the school will keep her far too busy to make the journey. Sarah Porter 1813-1900 founded her school in Farmington in 1843 setting it up as an institution at which girls could receive a well-rounded academic education. She writes in part:

"My dear Mary I thank you heartily that you have desired me as one of your wedding guests and I should be very happy in being with you at this so happy moment of your life. I could not easily under any circumstances easily leave school for so long a time as a journey to Newton would require - but now Mr. Brandt's wretched health renders him unable to teach and his classes fall daily into my care so that my place is daily here. Your own and your brother's wedding at once will not only doubly crown the day but give promise to multiplied successive anniversaries. unknown

Original printed wrappers with wrapper title as issued and original staples. ii 13 1 pp. Near Fine.

The Supreme Court heard argument in December 1952 but held the cases over for reargument in the following term. This is the Amicus Curiae brief submitted by the American Veterans Committee for the first argument. Supporting the District of Columbia children seeking to integrate the Washington public schools the Committee contends that the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments guarantee the right to be free from racial discrimination that equality of education is impossible under a regime of racially segregated schools that equality can be achieved only by abolition of compulsory segregation by race and that "The people of Washington are ready for and will accept integration of their public schools."
The brief is signed in type by the Committee's National Counsel Phineas Indritz who was a distinguished civil rights and constitutional lawyer.
