19131266351913. Ireland: June 16-18 1913.

Small lined notebook 11x17.5 cm 56 pp. orange card covers titled by hand spine reinforced with tape. Approx. 28 pages filled with neat ink manuscript entries illustrated with four small original sepia photos and a hand-drawn folded map tipped to inside of front cover. Covers a little worn contents age-toned but entirely legible.

§ A delightfully detailed record of an amusingly rushed school trip to Ireland made by an English schoolboy in 1913. The boys and several masters departed from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire it seems likely they attended Wycliffe College prep school and travelled by train to Fishguard in Wales and from there by boat to Rosslare Harbour in Country Wexford Ireland. Then by train char-a-banc a governess cart ponies and finally boats they tore across the south of Ireland to Killarney and back in a single day. The dutiful author of the journal prepares for the trip with several lists: "General time-table" "List of required articles" including "change of socks.cup soup-plate. rug if room" "Things to be noticed" Waterford Harbour Mountains Lakes Cattle Grazing. and a very thorough plan for "Meals" cornflakes chocolate bananas squashed fly biscuits. The journal itself is neatly written and full of detail particularly of the various vehicles Irish trains get a thorough review and his glimpses of "real Ireland". Four small mounted photos show a bridge in Kerry viewed from a boat Ross Castle "A Jaunting Bar" a kind of horse-drawn carriage and happily "the Author" who appears to be in his early teens. The star of the journal is a large folding map of the trip carefully hand-drawn and keyed and mounted inside the front cover. unknown
1885List405Carlisle: J.N. Choate 1885. Albumen cabinet card 8 x 4 ⅞ inches on slightly larger mount. Very Good. Carlisle Indian Industrial School founded in 1879 was one of the most influential institutions of its type during its existence from 1879 to 1919. The purpose of the school - unlike some predecessors such as the Hampton Normal and Agricultural School which sent American Indians back to their homes upon graduation - was to fully eradicate American Indian culture from its pupils with strict discipline imposed on students who spoke in their native languages. John Nicholas Choate was a photographer from Carlisle whose pictures sought to extol the purported benefits of the Carlisle Indian School. American Indian delegates often visited the school and this picture shows several seated possibly with interpreters. Major James Haworth the first Superintendent of Indian Schools is shown in the photo with an "x" above his head and a note on the verso misspelling his name as James Hayworth. Haworth was an Indian Agent before his appointment as superintendent and it is unclear if this picture was taken before or after his appointment.

A well preserved example with good contrast and two chips with loss at lower edge good to very good condition overall. J.N. Choate unknown books

1965221061965. EducationIntegration Los Angeles public school panoramic photographs 1965-1968 showcasing racial integration and diversity in East Los Angeles during the Civil Rights era. Created at a time of expanding desegregation efforts and increased visibility of Chicano and Sansei Japanese identity in urban California the images provide direct visual evidence of multiracial student populations in a major West Coast school system.

Three panoramic silver gelatin photographs showing Hollenbeck Junior High School Classes of 1965 and 1967 and Roosevelt High School Class of 1968. Los Angeles California 1965-1968. The large-format images measuring between 25 x 8 inches and 28 x 8 inches present hundreds of students arranged in traditional panoramic format on school grounds. The Roosevelt High School Class of 1968 photograph includes a visibly diverse cohort of Latino Black Asian American and white students in graduation attire distributed throughout the composition without apparent segregation by race. The Hollenbeck Junior High photographs similarly depict multiethnic student groups with period dress including uniform-style dresses collared shirts ties and sweaters. The versos of the 1965 and 1967 Hollenbeck prints contain numerous handwritten inscriptions from classmates including signatures and messages such as "Good luck in the B-10" and other personal notes. The presence of Spanish surnames including Roberta Noriega situates the photographs within the predominantly Mexican American community of East Los Angeles and documents peer networks within that setting.

These photographs correspond to a period preceding the 1968 East Los Angeles student walkouts when Mexican American students protested educational inequality making them materially relevant to the study of pre-activist conditions within these schools. The integrated compositions and inscriptions together document both institutional structure and interpersonal relationships offering layered evidence of how students experienced race identity and belonging within public education. Light surface creasing and minor soiling to versos; images remain sharp with strong contrast and minor edge wear no losses. Overall very good condition. A visual record of multiracial student life in East Los Angeles. unknown
16666Women Education Medical School Photo archive of women students at Duke University School of Medicine Class of 1950. Consist of 23 original Gelatin silver print black and white photos. 3 x 4 ¼ inches. c. 1940s-1950. Images show students at work in blood banks in labs studying and relaxing between classes. Includes photos of school buildings such a the Medical School entrance in addition to several instructors. Some include handwritten captions giving a little more information such as a picture of the "Class of 1950" with 8 women and 1 man identified: "Bev Helen Belle Monkey Noni Ann Betty Joann Bill". Other captions include names of doctors instructors fellow students and the type of work being done in images such as "Bev - vaccine" and "Beth Bueliner - Blood Bank". Other photos identify the subject as the Media Lab Chemistry Lab working with EKG and studying Hematology blood. Students outside of medical school entrance. Photos of a quick break grabbing a coffee and snack of animal crackers.

Although women had participated in the informal practice of medicine for hundreds of years there were relatively few women studying medicine in the United States at this time. By 1900 only about a dozen medical schools had opened to coeducation and female graduates often found themselves unable to access training hospitals and professional associations. The trailblazing young women in these photos whom we see performing experiments and examining patients bucked the trend of their generation to become doctors. Early images of women in medicine are very rare and a fine addition to a collection. Very good condition. unknown books
