James was famous for developing the first standard psychology textbook to be used in U.S. schools. He was also a philosopher dabbling in radical empiricism and pragmatism. James earned his degree in medicine from Harvard Medical School and spent his career lecturing there and at other institutions on the East Coast. William James firmly believed that our psychological experiences could be tied to our physiology. He argued that mental states were connected to physical ones and worked fervently to make psychology a hard science.
