The essays were written by James' colleagues and include contributions from John Dewey Felix Adler Kate Gordon and many other philosophers and psychologists. James earned his degree in medicine from Harvard Medical School and spent his career lecturing there and at other institutions on the East Coast. William James firmly believed that our psychological experiences could be tied to our physiology. He argued that mental states were connected to physical ones and worked fervently to make psychology a hard science. James Stanley Grimes was one of the most important American writers on animal magnetism. Grimes maintained that the effects of mind on matter and of mind upon mind occurred through a medium he called the 'etherium.' "The study of the way in which the etherium conveys impressions from one mind to another and the way in which these impressions are channeled through the physical organism he calls 'etherology.'" See Crabtree. Grimes' "Etherology" was first published in Boston and New York 1845. This second edition is revised and edited. Grimes' work inspired the American seer Andrew Jackson Davis to visit the spirit world through techniques of mesmerism. See Falk Doris V. "Poe and the power of animal magnetism." in PLMA vol. 84 No. 3 May 1969 p.544. Crabtree 515 - listing first edition.

James Munroe and Co. / Edward T. Whitfield hardcover
