Second Edition, with additions, 4to, vi,151,[1]pp., with the armorial bookplate of Lady Frances Scott, engraved frontis., light water stain to lower outer corner of first 15 pages, cont. calf, hinges cracked, label chipped. First published in 1745 and Dedicated to the Duchess of Portland, from whose most extensive collection it was compiled. Vertue derived much of the information for the life of Hollar from the younger Faithorne and Mr. F. Place, both of them engravers, who were very conversant with Hollar during his residence in London.

Clean very tight pages with unmarked rubbed marbled boards and well-rubbed edges, foxing to end papers and a few other pages and dusty page edges. Gilt lettered leather spine and corners rubbed and top of spine slightly frayed. 528pp. The characters, descriptions and uses of the animals from the Adive (similar to a Jackal) to the Zorilla (or African skunk). Excellent figure engravings on wood by Thomas Bewick.

OCLC locates only 12 copies in book form. Quarto sized 10" x 12" in blindstamped red cloth hardcovers stamped in gilt over black tape cloth spine. Unpaginated 46 pp. A uniquely designed geography/freading aid for young people that instead of maps features a full page of small hieroglyphic engravings for each descriptive word or group of words that illustrated notable facts places names etc. for each of the states covered. For example for Maine one small item is "The minerals are" with a small engraving of a handiron "granite" small picture of a rock; "More engraving of a ship are built here than in any other State". Each hieroglyphic page is followed by a single page of text of desciptive text which which is an non-illustated transcription of the the illustrated page. Covers well soiled though the gilt titling is still bright. Some tape stains to the dark brown endpapers front hinge split but all pages firmly attached; dampstaing to the lower aprox. quarter of all pages.
