Between 1965 and 1974 William Eggleston and Walter Hopps traveled together in the US Eggleston taking photographs Hopps driving. During these travels the title Los Alamos was born. The negatives for what became known as the Los Alamos Project were made between 1965 and 1974 and were archived in two boxes labeled Box #17 and Box #83. The latter was lost for several years. The project is presented in its entirety in this three-volume set for the first time. An earlier edition of "Los Alamos" edited by Thomas Weski was published by Scalo in 2003. Weski"s original essay is included in this revised edition. "Los Alamos Revisited" has been drawn from the complete set of photographs including the long lost negatives from Box #83. Images throughout the publication are all gorgeous examples of vibrant b/w photogravure printing. The layout design and typography of the work was created by Hajek in collaboration with the acclaimed Czech illustrator puppeteer and animator Jiřà Trnka 1912-1969. Following the title page with a playful photomontage showing the photographer in a newsprint suit is a page of introductory text for the exhibition from writer playwright and filmmaker Vladislav VanÄura 1891-1942 art critic Bohumil Markalous 1882-1952 and finally Hajek himself. This is followed by a beautiful full-page photomontage of images by Hajek which serves as an introduction to the exhibition. A selection of 7 captioned images from the exhibition is then followed by a text page of technical information concerning the photography and a full list of the 181 photos included in the exhibition along with their respective film stocks. The final pages are comprised of numerous finely photo-illustrated period advertisements all also printed very nicely in photogravure. A now very scarce document of the early career of this important figure of Czech photo-journalism.<br /> <br /> Minor scratches and abrasions to the front wrappers. This beautiful portfolio is a collection of 178 loose leaf plates of art reproductions by Chinese artists from the Yuan Ming and Ch'ing dynasties roughly the thirteenth to the nineteenth century by the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 1961. Nestled in a beige clamshell case with fold out enclosures each plate is numbered 1 to 178 and are all present. Some plates bear a full-color tipped in reproduction of each art piece; all others in black and white against a cream cardstock paper. Some plates frame the tipped in image in a debossed border within the paper. Each full plate measures 18.75" tall x 13 2/16" wide with varying sizes of art pieces thereon. Two booklets are enclosed one written in English 30 pages and one written in Chinese 45 pages containing the plate number title artist artist's medium catalogued number and collection and a detailed description of the piece. The English booklet also includes an index of artists and sources of acquisition. The case bears two closures which secure at the foredge with plastic/bone-like pin clasps and gold gilt debossed lettering on the cover and spine. The case's inner lining is a navy blue cloth and cream paper with the inner flap closures lined with cream paper. This collection and case are housed in the original plain cardboard box with a cream label with the title in a light brown on the front. Two cardboard surrounds protect the case within the box and are both present. The box itself measures 19.5" tall x 14" wide x 2.5" thick. Only during the past three decades however has the true appreciation of Chinese paintings become apparent. Today public museums and private collectors are striving to acquire masterpieces. Fortunately this Museum recognized the significance of the pictorial art of China as far back as the early nineties and beginning with the purchase of five paintings by Chou Ching-ch'ang dated 1178-1190 has ever since been assembling worthy paintings. Now it holds an enviable position among similar collections in the world.<br><br>In 1933 the Museum published a Portfolio of Chinese Paintings in the Museum Han to Sung Periods. As its sequel the Museum now offers to the public this Portfolio containing reproductions of paintings from the Yuan Ming and Ch'ing dynasties roughly from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century. <br><br>Anyone who has delved into the field of Chinese paintings is aware that many works especially after the Yuan period bear inscriptions usually of a poetic nature appropriate to the subjects depicted. To them the art of painting was but one of the cultural accomplishments like calligraphy and poetry. It was therefore natural for them to express on the pictorial works their calligraphic skill and poetic thoughts. Thus a picture and the literary writing upon it became integral parts. For this reason included in the descriptive section of this Portfolio are translations of such Chinese inscriptions. One acquainted with the Chinese language knows that a literal rendering of a Chinese composition into English is well-nigh impossible because of the frequent allusions to classical literature and also because of the hidden or double meanings of some phrases. Consequently the English versions which are incorporated in the descriptions are free interpretations. The transcriptions of the original inscriptions are to be found in the catalogue in Chinese accompanying the Portfolio. <br><br>The paintings reproduced in the Portfolio came from individuals as gifts or were acquired from individuals as gifts or were acquired from funds established by legacies. Stunning and even in its original box. Light offset/toning on the cover of booklets from flap closure impression. Very small spotting on the inside front cover of the clamshell box. Some mild toning on the backs of plates. Small tear at the inside bottom of the case else beautifully fine. No creasing whatsoever. Art pieces are crisp and perfect. A wonderful collection. Outer cardboard storage box shows wear and discoloration and previous owner's label with notation dated 1978. Founded in 1906 by Boris Schatz who wrote the text it was established as the first modern institute of higher learning in Palestine. Bezalel is the foundation of fine arts in Israel and is known as the most prestigious art institute in the country. The school is seen as an instrumental force in the development of modern Jewish art in the 20th century.<br /> <br /> The illustrations in b/w throughout including the elaborately decorated front cover along decorative head and tailpieces and large historiated initials in an indicative Jugenstill style are all by Bezalel-educated painter and typographer Yaakov Stark aka 'Ben David' 1881-1915. Also ampanying the text are numerous captioned b/w photographic reproductions after original images taken by photographer Zadok Basan 1882-1956. The images show the exterior and interior of the school including many pictures of the faculty and students in class. Introductory text by then chairman of 'the Committee to help Jewish Workers in Syria and Palestine' Russian-born Zionist leader Menachem Ussishkin 1863-1941. The final pages contain advertisements in Russian Yiddish and Hebrew.<br /> <br /> Main text throughout in Yiddish.<br /> <br /> Wrappers with some light stains a paper label pasted on the spine and a closed tear along the left side of the front cover. Agnes Ernst Meyer 1887-1970 was an American journalist philanthropist civil rights activist and art patron. She was a close collaborator and friend of photographer Alfred Stieglitz with whom she publishing the arts and literary magazine "291" from 1915-916. She first encountered the work of photo-secession group when she chanced upon Stieglitz's Gallery 291 while work as a reporter for the New York Sun newspaper. She was one of the first female journalists to work at the paper. Due to this fact Stieglitz often referred to her as the "Sun Girl". Along with Katharine Rhoades and Marion Beckett she was known as the one of "The Three Graces" of the Alfred Stieglitz artistic circle. 1930ABC_485971930. Kept in a brown kraft paper envelope. With 13 gelatin silver prints various sizes. A collection of thirteen press photographs from the 1930s showing Saudi Arabian leaders during diplomatic visits to Europe. The beautifully sharp and clear photographs give a good impressions of what these events must have been like at the time. Most of the photographs come with the text that would have accompanied them when they were published in a newspaper and are stamped on the back by the press agency that had the rights for publication. We have not been able to find any of these photographs in online archives.Four of the images show Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud 1906-1975 during a diplomatic visit to Great Britain. Faisal was the third son of King Abdulaziz the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. Faisal was very intelligent and was given numerous important duties as a result. He was sent on a five-month long diplomatic visit to Great Britain and France when he was just 13 and achieved his first military successes when he was 16. He succeeded his half brother as king of Saudi Arabia in 1964 and became a well-loved ruler. The present photographs however show his visit to Great Britain in 1939. In particular his visit to the Royal Air Force stations in Middlesex and Northolt where he viewed the Hawker Hurricane planes which he considered to buy for the Royal Saudi Air Force. After his return however he decided against it.The other photographs show Fuad Bey Hamza 1899-1951 the Saudi ambassador in France and Fakry Pacha dates unknown the Egyptian ambassador in France during an Eid al-Fitr celebration in Paris in 1939 a portrait of Sheikh Sir Abdullah al-Salim al-Sabah 1895-1965 the 11th ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait and the Kaaba in Mecca during hajj.Some of the photographs are slightly discoloured or creased around the corners. Also includes images of Bombay and the Palace at Amber. The photographer is unidentified; probably an American couple on an Indian tour.<br /> <br /> The majority of the photographs concern life in India from people at work in a wide range of trades to women of different castes to wonderful marketplace scenes including children at play holy men wrestlers a carousel captioned "a Merry-Go-Round" and traveling artists.<br /> <br /> 40 images of rural India include: native houses village streets & centers a potter at work village shops village "bazarrs" sic showing all manner of sidewalk vendors and stalls village wells women walking to market with large baskets carried on their heads holy men sweet and bread sellers selling "pop" soft drinks from a cart burial of a distinguished person "a bride and her maids pay visits to relatives part of the 3 day wedding ceremony".<br /> <br /> 11 images titled "Women of India" show Hindu Jain and Mohammedan women women spinning women carrying goods stacked on their heads women with children and high caste women. <br /> <br /> 28 images of Indian men include an image title rather mysteriously "rural native police English Providence" porters young boys high diver gate keeper cook shoe mender snake charmer street musician clown traveler traveling artist traveling school teacher tobacco seller "by the puff" holy men of India "fakirs" wrestlers and a transvestite the image titled "an efeminate sic gentleman Indian man dressed in a sari.<br /> <br /> 21 images of the stunning Amber Palace and Fort in northwest India the oldest surviving palace in India built of red sandstone and white marble whose architecture shows a blend of Muslim and Hindu influences. Images include walls and grand entrances ceremonial elephants stunning interior views of the palace and its rich alabaster carvings and views of the surrounding landscape taken from the Palace walls. It is also an important document marking the controversial expulsion of German and Hungarian populations and celebrating the downfall of the German occupation. An extraordinary portfolio of early 20th-century photographs of Ethiopia featuring eight large-format scenes from a Coptic Orthodox wedding in addition to eight 3x5 photos of Ethiopian children. The wedding photos depict a very formal liturgical ceremony with the bride and groom in ornate robes and crowns attended by priests acolytes deacons cantors and other ecclesiastics in fine vestments carrying the sacred liturgical items including many golden crosses and a richly ornamented Holy Gospel. One photo of the long procession shows a great crowd of attendees dressed in white robes. A previous dealer's description of this porfolio speculates that the great pomp of this ceremony might indicate that it was a royal wedding perhaps even the marriage of Esther Akhnoukh and Fahmy Bey Wissa described by the English Ethnographer S. H. Leeder. But in Leeder's own account he notes that the crowns and regalia are the property of the church a communal holding and the wearing of which is the right and privilege of all baptised faithful for one day in their lives. Photos mounted on original 11x14' mattes with just a bit of rubbing and toning to the extremities one photo with a tiny dampstain to the margin otherwise all photos are FINE entirely clean and sharp. The 3x5' photos of children are mounted four to a matte. These photos show children in joyful poses particularly showcasing their hairstyles one of which includes a oder girl with a large water gourd; two of the photos show children being swarmed by flies. The phtographer is unnamed but there are a fairly limited number of possibilities. It was almost certainly purchased by Rosenberg on his Travelling fellowship around 1921 putting the date of the actual photos sometime in the previous decade. Prior to the Italian invasion in the 30's Ethiopia was not an easy place to access and was simply not a destination for European travellers making professional photo-documentations of it far less common than its neighbor Egypt in the same time period. One tempting and plausible source would be one of the photographers of the Enno Littman-led 'Deutsche Aksum Expedition' which included extensive ethnographic investigations in the course of their larger mission of investigating the archaeological sites of the Kingdom of Aksum in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. A noted Semiticist Littman lived among the Tigre people of Eritrea for a year before directing the Aksum expedition doing research for later linguistic and ethnographic publications including 'Tales Customs Names and Dirges of the Tigre Tribes' which includes ample descriptions of religious ceremony. Housed in a contemporary 11x16' portfolio sold by C. Roberson of London half black cloth over printed paste paper and ties to all three sides with moderate wear to the extremities and French liquor labels to the endpapers. With owner's label to the rear cover ex-libris Louis Conrad Rosenberg a noted architect whose 171 etchings and architectural illustrations and renderings have been archived in the University of Oregon Special Collections Division. After serving in the US Army and American Expeditionary Force during WWI Rosenberg joined the factulty of the University of Oregon. He and his wife Marie Louise Allen of Portland took advantage of a Traveling Fellowship granted by the UO and travelled extensively throughout the Mediterranean and the Levant for 2 years beginning in 1920. These are Fineberg's own retained copies many with his docketing and captioning on the rear. Images include a three-panel panorama Looking towards Woevre Plain between St. Michel & Verdun aerial reconnaissance images captured German munitions battlefields with casualties Fineberg with other members of his Photographic Unit Harry Rathburn and Henry Paschen.Fineberg ca. 1892-1949 was killed while on assignment for the Boston Post. He was photographing a US Marines and Navy mock invasion drill at Carson Beach in South Boston when shrapnel from an exploded mortar hit him in the head. It features the photos of Jack Smith stills from his film Flaming Creatures as well as work from famous Beats Allen Ginsberg Michael McClure and William S. Burroughs. The latter's influence on Bob Dylan was profound. This literary magazine was featured on Dylan's mantelpiece on the front cover of the album Bringing It All Back Home as per Dylan's request which is a testament to that influence that also made this one-off production an instant cult favorite. The paper deals with the dynamical interplay between photochemistry and photography and is of the greatest importence in applied photography. The later sections of the paper deals with the spectrum of the sun Herschel's so-called thermographical representation of the spectrum of the sun with description of the Actinograph invented by him rendering the heat radiation visible in the spectrum. This first importent spectrum is reproduced here on one of the plates in stipple engraving. In this paper he introduces the photographical concepts 'positive' and 'negative' to express respectively pictures in which the lights and shades are the same as in nature or as in the original model and in which they are opposite. Louise Dahl-Wolfe 1895 - 1989 Was An American Photographer. She Is Known Primarily For Her Work For Harper's Bazaar In Association With Fashion Editor Diana Vreeland. She Began Her Studies At The California School Of Fine Arts Now The San Francisco Institute Of Art Where She Studied Design And Color With Rudolph Schaeffer And Painting With Frank Van Sloan. After Graduating Dahl-Wolfe Worked In Designing Electric Signs And Interiors. In 1921 Dahl-Wolfe Met With Photographer Anne Brigman Who Inspired Her To Take Up Photography. From 1927 To 1928 Dahl-Wolfe Traveled With Photographer Consuelo Kanaga Who Furthered Her Interest In Photography. In 1928 She Married The Sculptor Meyer Wolfe Who Constructed The Backgrounds Of Many Of Her Photos. Dahl-Wolfe Was Known For Taking Photographs Outdoors With Natural Light In Distant Locations From South America To Africa In What Became Known As "Environmental" Fashion Photography. Compared To Other Photographers At The Time Who Were Using Red Undertones Dahl-Wolfe Opted For Cooler Hues And Also Corrected Her Own Proofs With One Example Of Her Pulling Proofs Repeatedly To Change A Sofa's Color From Green To A Dark Magenta. She Preferred Portraiture To Fashion Photography. Notable Portraits Include: Mae West Cecil Beaton Eudora Welty W. H. Auden Christopher Isherwood Orson Welles Carson Mccullers Edward Hopper Colette And Josephine Baker. She Is Known For Her Role In The Discovery Of A Teenage Lauren Bacall Whom She Photographed For The March 1943 Cover Of Harper's Bazaar. One Of Her Favourite Subjects Was The Model Mary Jane Russell Who Is Estimated To Have Appeared In About Thirty Percent Of Dahl-Wolfe's Photographs.
