This marvelous souvenir photo album composed of Ottoman-era albumen images captured not only recreated iconic religious scenes but also captured Jerusalemites in city streets and the Holy Land in the opening decades of the 20th Century. The album opens with the image of the â€œStreet Scene inside Jaffa Gateâ€ which captures Frederick Vester & Co.â€™s American Colony shop and photography studio in the right fore-ground of the image with bustling street and clock tower prominent in the center of the image. The American Colony produced created developed printed hand-coloured and sold thematic photographs stereoviews panoramic photos postcards custom hand-coloured glass lantern slides along with deluxe thematic souvenir albums such as this one. The series included here which incorporates a view of the room for the Last Supper and a nicely composed image of a beautifully terraced Garden of Gethsemane follows with the Stations of the Cross. The often incorporate residents in their daily lives watering donkeys pilgrims praying at Stations merchants and those wandering through the gates and winding streets of the ancient city. The photographers have captured the baroque & ornate Station Calvary the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a view of the Dome of the Rock and a teeming scene of women men and families seated and standing praying at the Wailing Wall. The American Colony emerged from the evangelical â€œEnd Timesâ€ beliefs inculcated by Horatio Spafford and Anna Larssen Spafford in 19th-Century Chicago who despite their profitable lectures the support & encouragement of Dwight Moody and at best questionable financial chicanery shipped out for the Holy Land in 1881 ahead of their creditors for $ 100000. Eventually the largely â€œcelibateâ€ commune controlled by â€œMessages from Godâ€ to Anna Spafford and through lectures and charity merged with Olof Larsonâ€™s â€œDoomsdayâ€ Larsonite believers along with Frederick Vester and a number of photographers began operating the American Colony store near the Jaffa gate and vastly expanding their tourist photographic operations. By 1910 they had several employees and the noted American Colony photographers such as Elijah Meyers and Lewis Larsson extended their talents across Palestine capturing not only the River Jordan but life in Bethlehem Bethany Syria Damascus and many other locations across the Ottoman Empire controlled areas. Although the American Colony projected a harmonious community bound together by simple Christian piety the sect was tightly controlled by Anna who not only restricted and monitored all correspondence by Colony members ordered shunning of those who ignored her dictates and maintained direct control over their finances. She also enforced marital celibacy until she â€œreceived a Messageâ€ that her daughter Bertha and Frederick Vester could marry in 1904. 1930218616Japan. Circa1930. 79 black and white photographs 43pp 18.2 x 25.5cm bound in a black velvet covered photograph album with string ties bearing what is likely a class insignia. Three photographs are loosely inserted a few have been removed some photographs are attached using photo corners most laid down some browning fading or wear but generally the photographs are in good to very good condition. Some of the planes depicted are identifiable as early models of biplanes. A group photograph of military officers at Onohara Airstrip likely in Kyushu is dated July 1904. These biplanes were primarily operated by the Imperial Japanese Army. The album also includes two striking photographs of a plane flying over the crater of Mount Fuji as well as scenes of what appears to be the Yalu River Liaoyang and an industrial plant in Manchuria. Additionally there are images of a Ryan NYP-type plane with the identification number J-BACC. This particular aircraft was purchased by the Mainichi Newspaper Company in 1927 for promotional purposes inspired by Charles Lindbergh's historic transatlantic flight in the same type of plane. Also included is a photograph of a Dornier Do J Wal in Deutsche Luft Hansa livery. The final photograph features a diagram of a Zenith carburettor adding a technical dimension to this fascinating collection. This album not only captures the early days of aviation in Japan but also reflects the personal passion of its owner offering a unique glimpse into the intersection of personal history and technological progress during the early 20th century. . unknown

Faint foxing to a couple of images somewhat heavier on the first image the album measures 27.5 x 36.5cm. Large gift inscription dated '92 1892Yokohama. Endpapers marked and slightly soiled still a handsome and very interesting album containing a number of unusual photographs. Beautiful lacquered album containing a collection of 24 professionally produced hand coloured photographs of Japan in the 1870s -1880s. The identity of the photographers behind these hand-coloured prints of is uncertain but a number of the photos appear to have been taken by photographers associated with the Yokohama studio of English/Italian photographer Felice Beato 1832-1909 which operated in Yokohama from the mid-1860s to the mid-1880s. . hardcover

190074021Port Townsend WA and others: N.p. ca. 1900. Original quarto album of full morocco measuring 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. There are 24 think leaves mounted on stubs with each leaf bearing four windows for photographs measuring 3 7/8 x 2 7/8 inches. Most of the leaves in the rear bear no photographs but in the front there are 64 inserted silver gelatin photographs. Of these 36 bear images of people places and activities in the Puget Sound/Port Townsend area The remainder are quotidian shots of England. A chief concern in this album is mining and likely they brought in some British miners which would explain the shots of England. No surnames are given so it is all a bit of a mystery but the pictures speak for themselves. Finding a mining album of the Northwest is a rather rare occasion.The photographs of interest are; Log Cabin; Ranch House with two women and an infant in front; the nanny appears to be a Native American; Ore Coming out of a Tunnel; Harry Smith Cabin with two gents relaxing on the front porch; Cook House a mess tent with many miners taking their meal; Bunk homes for the workers; Blacksmith shop and Ore Dump with two men pushing a cart of trailings down the hill; Swamp grass three foot high; Dumping ore from car; Road Gang at Dinner; Railroad Station near mountains; Road Makers to the Mine a posed group shot of 20 men; Sunset near Port Townsend; Mates at the Boiler Makers; A river near our mine faded. The rest are uncaptioned but we can see the same camp and people in the winter snow; 2 shots of a sailing vessel trying to come up the Columbia ; and seven photographs of Native Americans unposed. One of them seems to be wearing a mask or bag over his head. A fascinating album of a rough and tumble time in the Pacific Northwest. N.p. unknown

Original vernacular photograph album documenting the vehicle ownership history of Greg Wildrick of Peru Indiana 1955-1966

Vintage stringbound vernacular photograph album documenting the vehicular obsessions of one Greg Wildrick of Peru Indiana who would ultimately kill four people in a motor vehicle accident and later die himself in the same manner while speeding. Approximately 150 black-and-white photographs and 50 color photographs with manuscript ink annotations captioning most of the images. Manuscript ink annotations on the front board provide the album's title: "#1 / Our new cars etc. / Family Too." Additional annotations on the inside rear board note: "The bullshit contained in this so called albumn sic belongs to Greg E. Wildrick / 4 Holiday Drive / Peru Indiana is where I live if you don't know me. Call 472-2550 / If you don't call me forget it!!! / Book Finished March 5 1967 at 4:45 A.M." The photographs in the album span roughly 1955 to 1966 compiled by Greg at the age of 19. In addition to many images of the family's muscle cars and trucks the album also contains quite a few shots of bicycles go-karts quarter midgets and speedboats often with family members posing happily nearby. Several images also capture vehicles in use. Patently obsessed with cars and speed from a young age Wildrick would go on to work as a used car salesman in nearby Kokomo Indiana throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Wildrick's fanaticism also evidently extended to his leisure hours as the Kokomo Tribune notes Wildrick's involvement in multiple speeding violations during the same period. One of the album's more striking photographs taken on December 19 1965 is a blurry color Polaroid of the speedometer of a 1966 Oldsmobile 442 going 110 miles per hour down US Highway 31. This same stretch of 31 would see Wildrick gravely injured and four others dead in a grisly two-car accident five years later in January of 1971. Sadly this would not be Wildrick's last serious accident as a similar collision on US Highway 35 would precipitate his own demise in 1986 at the age of 39. A fascinating and thorough album capturing a young man's coming-of-age in a car-centric family and more broadly allowing a personal glimpse into the golden age of the automobile in postwar America. 12.75 x 12.25 inches. Rudd and the Paynter Brothers Richard and John were photographers who were active in Costa Rica in the 1890s operating out of San Jose. Five of these views show the Rudd y Paynter mark on versos with their address at the Parque Central in San Jose. The Paynters were from the United States arriving in 1874 and first establishing Rudd y Paynter out of a shop in the Parque Central where they also sold marble and art objects. In 1895 the studio changed its name to Paynter Bros. Collected here are nine scarce albumen views of Costa Rica from the 1890s. Five of them document a trip up Mt. Turrialba these bear the Rudd y Paynter mark. Of the other other four one image shows a building likely in San Jose with a gathered crowd; one shows a very striking mural and is captured â€œCorpus Christi / Cartaga Costa Rica June 4 / 96 this shows no photographers mars though the size and format are identical to the others and we presume the photographers to be the Paynter brothers; One shows industrial coffee machinery on â€œEl Canadaâ€ the last shows a group of people in front of the bridge over the Rio Grande with a platform showing the markings of the Hamlin Car and Wheel Company of Catwissa PA. The group with the exception of the Corpus Christi image are mounted on uniform heavy cardstock mounts with gilt edges and remain in particularly fine condition with excellent contrast and some light wear to mounts. Overall a scarce group documenting Costa Rica at a time when few photographers operated. unknown

Photo-illustrated title page. This scarce work is a striking piece of photographic propaganda displaying the power and glory of the Japanese Imperial Navy during WWII. Illustrated throughout with a total of 74 mostly full-page b/w collotype images including stunning aerial photography. The photobook is divided into two parts: the first one is concerned with naval training while the second part deals with the unfolding course of the war being a record of Japanese successes from Pearl Harbor Malaya New Guinea and other parts of South East Asia. This is one of the very first publications to have show and extended pictorial account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor including a number powerful and dynamic images two of the images seen to be illustrations. Includes also numerous b/w Soviet-style photographic plates of naval guns battleships submarines and military planes as well as photographs of operations in China Java Borneo Philippines New Guinea and other areas in Southeast Asia. None of the images are credited to a particular photographer but included is work by Matsugi Fujio and possibly Kimura Ihei. The beginning of the section contains a finely detailed illustrated map showing Japanese naval positions and battles across the pacific theater. Text and captions throughout in Japanese. Slipcase with some light scratches as well as minor age toning and smudges. Corners rubbed and lightly chipped. Binding with minor stains smudges and scratches to the covers. There is a small 1/2" stain on the upper right corner of the front cover. Edges lightly rubbed with the head of the spine lightly chipped. Interior covers and endpaper lightly damp-stained. Gutters of interior covers reinforced. Book block tight. pages throughout very clean. Slipcase in good binding in very good- interior in very good condition overall. 19163187Los Angeles: Jameson 1916. Very good. Panoramic photograph 8 x 48.5 inches. Rolled. Light creasing and cracking at vertical edges; moderate soiling in upper right corner. A crisp image with good contrast captioned in the negative. An excellent panoramic view of the two towns of Nogales on the U.S-Mexico international boundary in Arizona and Sonora taken by a Los Angeles photographer during the Mexican Revolution and Border War. The image was taken with a circuit-view camera and presents a wide-angle view of the Mexican and American settlements centered on the border then just a road called International Street / Calle International and the Plaza and City Hall of the Mexican Nogales. To the right of center are the two train stations directly adjacent to one another straddling the border with most of American Nogales further to the right and spreading into the background. The photograph was taken from a hill just on the Mexican side of the border looking slightly northwest; captions in the negative identify the respective sides and the international boundary as well as the plaza at the center of the image. None of the military buildup around Nogales which resulted from a skirmish in 1915 and precipitated the Battle of Los Ambos Nogales in 1918 is visible but another panorama taken by this photographer on the same excursion from a farther vantage point shows American soldiers and army tents that surrounded Nogales during the Border War. OCLC locates no individually catalogued examples of this photograph though we locate a possible copy in the Southwestern photography archives of the University of Arizona. Jameson unknown

Annotated Vernacular Photograph Album Documenting the Personal and Academic Life of a Young Japanese American Woman and Her Family in Japan and California

Good. 24 leaves illustrated with 206 mounted black-and-white or sepia-toned photographs of varying sizes most with manuscript captions in Japanese. Quarto. Contemporary maroon photograph album with floral design and "Photo Album" printed on front cover. Spine chipped both boards and spine detached minor rubbing to boards. Photographs generall well preserved. A well-annotated vernacular photograph album documenting the life schooling and early work career of a young woman in the Hamamoto family the only daughter and here referred to simply as "Hamomoto-san" along with significant images of her family in California in the 1930s. Hamamoto's family seem to have been early immigrants to the Los Angeles area particularly Pacoima where they ran a meat market and grocery store in 1934. Seven photographs in a two-page spread show the Hamomotos in Pacoima including four of their store and three of the Hamomotos posed at Pacoima Elementary School; one of the latter images shows the compiler posed with three other students of different ethnicities at the school. The present album includes numerous photos of Hamomoto along with portratis of her parents brothers various friends and so forth. Hamamoto's family apparently relocated back to Japan in the mid-1930s stopping in Hawaii along the way where a photo of the family is captioned "On the way back to Japan." She evidently stayed in Japan thereafter likely so that she could attend school in Hiroshima. Once Hamamoto resettled in Hiroshima she enrolled in a Buddhist-affiliated private high school for girls Shintoku Higher School for Girls where she graduated in 1942. Much of the latter half of the present album contains school class photos groups shots of students engaging in various ceremonies and school projects individual portraits of her classmates with many identified and other scenes at school and at reunions afterwards. Hamomoto's school was later destroyed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 killing almost 400 students and teachers. The present album also documents at least one other back-and-forth move between the United States and Japan within the Hamomoto family. In 1940 the compiler's brother Hiroshi went to the U.S. and returned in 1941 where he entered a major institute focusing on broadcast technology. Following high school Hamomoto worked for Mitsui Bussan for a while; one image here is captioned "During the time I worked at Mitsui & Co. 1944. Taken on the roof." Mitsui Bussan is still a major trading company in Japan that deals in commodities. Hamomoto may have also worked for American authorities during the Occupation of Japan following World War II evidenced by a couple of images here showing her posed outside an R.T.O. office in 1947. The American military established the Railroad Transportation Office in occupied Japan in order to manage military and personnel travel on the Japanese railway system; these offices were set up at several major Japanese train stations. This album is a nice example of a primary source reflecting the fluid interplay within the Japanese and Japanese-American communities with regard to life in Japan versus the United States before World War II. There were often tensions within Japanese and Japanese-American families related to which country provided better opportunities for their families especially the younger generations. The present album is one example when the family apparently decided against life in America and returned to the mother country specifically to Hiroshima. The compiler of the album survived the war however and may have even worked with American occupiers likely due to some facility with the English language first learned long before during childhood in California. unknown

With support from the Federal Art Project Abbott together with a staff of more than a dozen including darkroom printers field assistants researchers and clerks produced this work in advance of the 1939 Worldâ€™s Fair in Flushing Meadow NY with captions written by her life partner and art critic Elizabeth McCausland 1899-1965. 191174595Essen: Fried. Krupp Aktiengesellschaft 1911. A portfolio of forty-four original mounted silver gelatin prints of Krupp armaments designed specifically for the Argentinian Army. Published by the Krupp family in Essen in 1911. Each photograph measures 5.25 x 9 inches or a bit smaller. They are tipped onto thin gray sheets with printed captions in Spanish. Each image has a Krupp blind stamp in the lower left corner. Oblong octavo 8.5 x 13.25 inches. Housed in the original folding maroon cloth portfolio with gilt lettering on front and snap closures. Portfolio lightly rubbed but photographs and mounts crisp and clean. Near fine. Laid in are two extra photographs measuring 5 x 8.5 inches on stiff mounts measuring 7 x 9.75 inches each with printed text identifying the members of the Argentinean delegation and the Krupp employees at the Meppen Gun Testing Area December 1899. In the background of one image can be seen the massive cannon and the gun works.A striking array of military hardware is pictured including cannons and wagons for carrying ammunition spare parts and tools. Two photographs show a remarkable wagon with its observation deck extended to a height of twenty feet. In twelve photographs various tool boxes are opened to display the tight and orderly placement of saws hammers dies cordage brushes and other implements needed to keep these guns and wagons in top order.
