20999Japan Hydrogen Industry Co Ltd. Onahama Fukushima Prefecture Japan 1947. Cloth album 12 x 8.5 inches containing 33 silver gelatin photographs mounted to rectos only with printed captions in English and Japanese on facing pages. Very good. In the aftermath of World War II the Allied powers recognized the importance of stabilizing the Japanese economy as part of a larger effort to prevent Japan's remilitarization and stave off the spread of communism. With the assistance of foreign aid the Japanese government invested heavily in strengthening its industrial and manufacturing capacity. Economic development efforts in the coal-producing region of Fukushima Prefecture centered on the construction of chemical factories and related infrastructure. The Japan Hydrogen Industry Company also known as Nihon Suiso Company which had been founded in the port city of Onahama in 1937 became the core of the industrialization effort in the region after the war. This album produced in 1947 was likely used in an effort to attract American investment. The company was involved in the gasification of pulverized coal producing—depending on the exact process—coal gas water gas or syngas all combustible gases used for municipal lighting and heating prior to the large-scale production of natural gas as well as the production of ammonium sulfate and methanol. The album shows the plant's coke room; gas generators compressors and storage tanks; carbon monoxide converters; pumps for moving chemicals in solution; centrifuges; acid cooling process; ammonium sulphate storage room; and several parts of the methyl alcohol plant boiler turbo generators distiller machine shop storage drums. There is also a view of the entire seaside factory and one of the company's business offices. Over the next few decades Fukushima Prefecture underwent significant industrial development and became Japan's largest energy-supplying region. Whether this album made a specific contribution to that growth by garnering investment we do not know. But it is an interesting artifact of the early stages of the recovery that would become known as the Japanese Economic Miracle. unknown

Original photograph album detailing activities at the Macy’s Convention Center at the infamous 1924 Democratic Convention commonly referred to as the “Klanbake Conventionâ€. Macy’s set up their Convention Center at the Garden Theater adjacent to Madison Square Garden. Folio 13 x 19 inches. 68 leaves bearing 48 original 8 x 10 inch photographs captioned in white ink numerous newspaper articles a slew of original signed letters by various dignitaries commending Macy’s . The book/album is broken up into 12 chapters. The opening page to each chapter bears professional calligraphic lettering and charming colored drawings. The whole bound in contemporary half black morocco over cloth with gilt spine lettering. Some rubbing to leather and one page loose. A magnificent production.The 1924 Democratic Convention took place in Madison Square Garden and Macy’s Convention Center was held in the adjoining theater. The heading of Chapter I reads: “The Democratic Convention is tendered facilities of a club room and lounge by R. H. Macy & Co. Inc. as an expression of welcome to the visiting delegates. The Green Theatre adjoining the Convention Hall in Madison Square Garden is transformed into Macy’s Convention Clubâ€. The other chapter headings concern the various amenities offered by Macy’s at the Center powder room smoking room post office etc. as well as chapters covering the press’s coverage of Macy’s and a section of signed testimonials. The photographs mainly depict the physical amenities such as the post office and powder room but many are given over to various celebrities at the convention. Included are photographs of Tex Rickhard builder of Madison Square Garden chief promoter of the time and owner of the New York Rangers; John R. Voorhis police commissioner of New York City Cordell Hull future Secretary of State under FDR; Joseph P. Day Tammany Hall VIP; and several photographs of Josephine Norman beautiful leader of the California delegation and a McAdoo supporter. There are also numerous images of the actual building including all four corners and two photographs of cigar store Indians and one of the actual delegate hall. One interesting photograph shows silent actress Gilda Grey popularizer of the Shimmy Dance post the first transcontinental air missive from the convention the first daily Transcontinental Air Mail service involving both day and night flying over the entire route was opened on July 1 1924 from this Convention. It seems Hollywood has long favored movie stars. In addition to Gilda Gray there are two other movies stars; Allen Conner and Peggy Browne both mainly stars of the silent screen. The Beauty Parlor and the Smoking Room are also well represented in photographs. The photographer no doubt a professional and probably Macy’s in-house photographer but is not noted. The newspapers articles are from a newspaper cutting service and are all mounted on little tabs with publication history. The clippings are exhaustive 70000 cigarettes and a mountain of mints were supplied by Macy’s and while many of them concern Macy’s contribution to the convention one could get a firm grasp of the entire Convention by reading them. The testimonials are all signed originals with most of them coming from the offices of various states although many individual letters of appreciation are included as well. There is also one page bearing a specimen of official convention letterhead stationary with the envelope and two postcards of the convention. In 1924 Democratic prospects in the upcoming presidential election seemed promising. The administration of Republican Calvin Coolidge was rocked by a scandal the Teapot Dome which involved secret leasing of the Navy's oil fields to private businesses. But the Democratic Party was deeply divided. The Democratic Party was an uneasy coalition of diverse elements: Northerners and Southerners Westerners and Easterners Catholics and Jews and Protestants conservative landowners and agrarian radicals progressives and big city machines urban cosmopolitans and small-town traditionalists. On one side were defenders of the Ku Klux Klan prohibition and fundamentalism predominantly from the South and the West. On the other side were northeastern Catholics and Jewish immigrants and their children. A series of issues that bitterly divided the country during the early 1920s were on display at the 1924 Democratic Convention held at Madison Square Garden in New York City from June 24 to July 9 1924. These issues included prohibition and religious and racial tolerance. The Northeasterners wanted an explicit condemnation of the Ku Klux Klan.The two leading candidates symbolized a deep cultural divide. Al Smith New York's governor was a Catholic and an opponent of prohibition and was bitterly opposed by Democrats in the South and West. Former Treasury Secretary William Gibbs McAdoo a Protestant defended prohibition and refused to repudiate the Ku Klux Klan making himself unacceptable to Catholics and Jews in the Northeast.Newspapers called the convention a "Klanbake" as pro-Klan and anti-Klan delegates wrangled bitterly over the party platform. The convention opened on a Monday and by Thursday night after 61 ballots the convention was deadlocked. The next day July 4 some 20000 Klan supporters wearing white hoods and robes held a picnic in New Jersey. One speaker denounced the "clownvention in Jew York." They threw baseballs at an effigy of Al Smith. The event culminated in a cross burning.Al Smith and William Gibbs McAdoo withdrew from contention after the 99th ballot. It was the longest political convention in American history going 16 days and requiring 103 ballots before a compromise candidate was selected. On the 103rd ballot the weary convention nominated John W. Davis of West Virginia formerly a US Representative from West Virginia Solicitor General for the United States and US Ambassador to Britain under President Woodrow Wilson. The nomination proved worthless. Liberals deserted the Democrats and voted for Robert La Follette a third party candidate. Apathy and disgust kept many home and just half of those eligible went to the polls. The Democrat candidate John Davis received 8 million votes. The Candace Award was a prize given to African-American women of distinction by The National Coalition of 100 Black Women over a ten-year period between 1982 and 1996; the 1984 prize was shared between five women all pioneers in the American civil rights struggle of the 1950s-60s. Photographer Richard Gordon 1945-2012 became well-known for his studies of New York shop windows in the 1960s; he published half a dozen monographs and his works are widely held including at SFMoMA the Art Institute of Chicago and the Corcoran among many others. unknown

A curated group of images of New Orleans subjects with an emphasis on women children and religious imagery including one uncommon image of a rosary and another of the interior of a church. Most photographs document the city’s wealthy residents at a time when elite culture changed due to the abolition of French instruction in schools and the general forces of reconstruction. Photos mounted directly to tan heavy card stock. Contemporary manuscript captions throughout and small return address label affixed to rear cover. A number of card leaves coming or fully detached. Occasional small corner chips and minor wear to photos. Interesting photo album containing over sixty-five original and vernacular images that document a work trip through Peru and Ecuador compiled by an American engineer likely named Breese Rosette of Alhambra California per an address label on the rear cover. He evidently traveled on behalf of the Frederick Snare Company a major U.S. civil engineering and construction firm that was responsible for myriad works in Latin America and major projects in New York such as the Triborough Whitestone and Verrazano Narrows Bridges. Rosette went to Snare-owned material sites such as a rock quarry near Callao and a cement plant in Lima and also visited various project locations where the company was engaged such as railroad construction sites and mines. In between times he traveled to major cities such as Lima Callao Quito and Guayaquil and he also documents his travel to work sites by train and by river boat. In all a fascinating and well-rounded album showing American industrial and engineering work in 1920s South America. unknown

The images preserve visual evidence of everyday social and romantic interaction between women during the Cold War era a period when same sex relationships were often concealed within private social networks due to legal penalties and cultural hostility directed toward LGBTQ communities. Scenes of women embracing kissing dancing and relaxing together provide direct photographic documentation of forms of affection and companionship that frequently remained invisible within official historical archives.<br /> <br /> Archive of 24 photographs consisting primarily of silver gelatin prints along with several real photo postcards dating approximately from the 1950s through the 1970s. The photographs capture women interacting in domestic recreational and social environments. One photograph shows two formally dressed women exchanging a kiss while one holds a bouquet of flowers the composition suggesting a celebratory moment that may mark a romantic commitment. Another image depicts a woman seated on another woman's lap with both embracing closely their short hairstyles and tailored clothing reflecting contemporary forms of gender presentation that challenged conventional expectations of women's dress. All addition text throughout is finely printed in a cursive typefont.<br /> <br /> An album consisting of a series of 12 mounted albumen photographs reproducing original paintings of landscapes in New England and Northeastern Canada by British artist C.J. Charles Jones Way 1835-1919. During his career Way was noted for his depictions of North American and European landscapes and seascapes. From 1858 Way settled in Montreal where he established an art studio and often collaborated with pioneering Montreal-based photographer William Notman 1826-1891 who had set up one of the most noted early photography studios in the city. Here Notman photographs Way's work with a keen eye and attention to detail. Locations depicted in the images include: the White Mountains New Hampshire Mount Desert Island Maine The Gaspe Coast Quebec Levis/Quebec City Montreal and Niagara Falls. The final five images show areas in the vicinity of Saguenay River Quebec. <br /> <br /> Each of the 12 plates is tissue-guarded with the images and text caption below in landscape orientation. Archive of material regarding a pair of prospective African American child actors including four black and white photographs of the children four autograph letters signed from a "Madame Fay" variously addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Smith and an unnamed "Mr. Agent" and one typescript letter unsigned but seemingly from one of the Smiths responding to Fay's previous correspondence. Two photographs with the stamp of Adair's Studio at 4105 Central Avenue on the verso. <br /> <br /> Fay's letters which identify the children as twins broadly discuss her hopes of securing acting representation for the twins facilitated by the Smiths who seem to have had some connections within the film industry. The letters also frankly address Fay's financial hardships noting "I don't expect much for myself in the start buy if I only know that I have a Dependance I will feel safer. I don't think I shall ever be able to go into any ones kitchen and the lisence is so high for readings that unless I can't find any other sorce of Deasent living I hardly know what to do" sic all. Fay's note about licenses for readings as well as her distinctive moniker suggests that she also worked as a medium or psychic in addition to having previously worked for the Smiths.<br /> <br /> In her single letter to the unnamed agent Fay reiterates her desperation and states that she previously took the children to noted film and television comedy producer Hal Roach. She goes on to state her preference for the children working with a white agent and avoiding "the Central ave. agents". Central Avenue and 41st Street was the heart of African American life in Los Angeles in the early and mid-20th century a populous region commonly referred to as the "Black belt of the city" home to a rapidly growing African American community as well as numerous Black-owned enterprises. <br /> <br /> As a whole the archive presents an interesting and emotive glimpse into life on the edges of Depression-era Hollywood as well as the numerous difficulties and limitations faced by African Americans in gaining entry into the film industry.<br /> <br /> Photographs approximately 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Verve was a lavish French art and literary quarterly magazine published in Paris France. It was known for its high-quality reproductions of artwork and contributions from prominent artists and writers. The reproductions of artwork contained within would use techniques like heliogravure in color and black and white as well as lithography. E. Teriade the magazine's director envisioned this publication would present the work of the artists and writers in the most perfect way possible. While it featured both French and English editions this set of three issues bound in one are in English. <br><br>Bound in burnt dark orange publisher's cloth the cover bears the magazine's title "Verve" in metallic silver at the bottom corner of the cover and along the spine. The three issues bound together in this one book are Volume 1 No. 2 March-June of 1938; Vol. 1 No. 3 October-December of 1938; and Vol. 1 No. 4 January-March 1939. Profusely illustrated with artwork by many artists in black and white including actual lithographs bound in. Postally unused very good with some wear and soil; one image with wear over the "C" in Cincinnati and a small area of loss on the emulsion near the bottom of the card not affecting the image. Two nice images of well-dressed African-American women posing with a "Cincinnati" handkerchief or pennant. Kresge's at this time was located at 38 W. Fifth St. in Cincinnati.
