Accompanied by an ALS from the Young Mens Republican Club of Stratford Iowa date 1894 October 23 requesting "your autograph and if agreeable some political sentiment. as a memento from our choice for President in '96." Not surprisingly Reed declines to be goaded into penning "some political sentiment" that could be viewed as throwing his hat into the presidential ring prematurely! In Robson's handsome script in bold brown ink he pens: "'Shall we not laugh my masters' / -- Shakespeare. / Affirmatively answered by / Yours Very Truly / Stuart Robson / 1881." Appropriate quotation from a comedic actor -- unfortunately Shakespeare never wrote any such line. Likely Robson is badly misquoting a line from "The Merchant of Venice" Act III Scene I: "If you prick us do we not bleed if you tickle us do we not laugh if you poison us do we not die and if you wrong us shall we not revenge unknown

Tape stain at each corner touching upon several words but not Ruggles' signature. Accompanied by an 8" X 10" glossy black and white photograph of Ruggles a half-length pose showing Ruggles in later life leaning over a bench in workman's duds and apron clutching his glasses. Handsome printed certificate in a variety of ornamental typefaces with American Eagle crest testifying to the authenticity of a copy of a document from the Office of the Commissioner of Pensions signed boldly by H. CLAY EVANS 1843-1921 -- at that time Commissioner of Pensions 1897-1902 and previously two-time mayor of Chattanooga Republican congressman from Tennessee 1889-91. Further statement below this testifies to Evans' position and is signed boldly by Ryan as "Acting Secretary of the Interior" -- the then-current interior secretary Cornelius Bliss apparently temporarily out of commission. Large red flute-edged paper seal at lower left intact and handsome as are the two lengths of baby blue silk ribbon that run underneath it and up to the upper left of the document.
