21359The first time the Henley Royal Regatta begun in 1839 in Henley-on-Thomas England was won by a non-Briton was when this 21-year-old American and a partner won the double sculls rowing event in 1927; in 1971 as president of Tedruth Plastics Corporation he unveiled the world's first allurethane boat a 10' craft that could be used as a sailboat motorboat or rowboat and supposedly remained afloat even flooded with water and carrying four passengers. Then he wrote back. asking me if I didn't have one with hair on. Since I was bald before I ever met him I decided to really surprise him. So I went to a photographer and had a picture made with hair on my head. Around the Saturday Evening Post editorial rooms this was considered rather funny. here is one of them. Like the girl who wasn't named Miss America I wish I were better looking." Bold full signature. Accompanied by the aforementioned photograph: IPS 10" X 8" n.p. n.y. Very good. Absolutely delightful closeup of a very bald Brooks in pullover sweater and tie at the right facing left and looking into a small wall mirror which faces the photo's viewer -- in which Brooks' reflection WITH A FULL HEAD OF HAIR gazes out! A superb example of dark room trickery. In a light area of his sweater at the photo's lower right he boldly inscribes and signs in black ink: "For / George Gianetti / with my best wishes / Geo S Brooks." The most fun and unusual signed photograph we've ever handled -- and we've handled a great many. unknown

I hope to be in Paris a little later in the year so perhaps there may be a chance then if things are seasonably quiet!" Boldly signed "William Brownlow / Lord Lurgan." Dr Clara Barrus wrote 'Whitman & Burroughs' -- also in her 'Life & Letters of John Burroughs' there is much about their friendship." Address portion also penned in Burroughs' hand. Reproduction on heavy stock of a superb charcoal sketch by George Loh the classic image of Chadwick in mid-crawl crossing the Channel as well as a smiling large closeup of a young Chadwick in swim cap and goggles boldly signed and inscribed by her in blue ballpoint in later years: "Kindest regards and / best wishes to Eirene Mowji. / Sincerely / Florence Chadwick." This lovely portrait was originally created for an Equitable Life Assurance Society ad campaign from which this attractive copy was made as a keepsake. unknown

INSCRIBED by the author to Brown on the recto of the frontis "Wade R. Brown from Jas. Blount Cheshire." Cheshire 1850-1932 was the Bishop of North Carolina for the Episcopal Church from 1893 to 1922. Wade R. Brown was the Dean of the music department at the State Normal and Industrial School now UNCG in Greensboro North Carolina and is the faculty member for whom the Brown Building is named. ~~ Milnor Jones was an itinerant Episcopal preacher from South Carolina who went to western North Carolina in the late 19th century to preach and establish churches in the remote mountain valleys. Along with Cheshire he helped re-establish and build a mission and church in Valle Crucis North Carolina near Boone. This volume contains an account of his work in South Carolina as well as in the NC counties of Watauga Mitchell and Ashe. Chapter 5 pages 54 to 66 is on the Valle Crucis Mission. Check drawn on the First Security Bank in Kirkwood on pale blue stock filled out and signed entirely in Clemens' large bold hand in black fineline made out to John Dos Passos in the amount of five dollars.
