"We are all about as usual including the littlest now nearly a year old -- David Van Wormer Clough." And notes travels: "I was. in the Black Hills country last summer for branch school and took a short trip to Star Valley Western Wyoming. The obverse is a feeble attempt to catch a bit of the 'Wyoming Alps' or the Tetons." Nicely penned in brown ink. The verso is a fine print titled "The Tetons" a tiny woodblock image of grand mountains captioned "Christmas Greetings / Mr. and Mrs. Wilson O. Clough." Lathers" -- surely Richard Lathers 1821-1903 noted Charleston and later New York merchant banker diplomat and insurance and railroad executive. On stationery bearing a blind-embossed heading of "Tremont House / Boston" Boston's famous and pioneering hotel Colt pens a friend in his sloppy scrawl. In part: "How I should like to dine with you these October days -- & especially on the last day of show that best of all holidays in the year. 25130One of the nine younger siblings of American nursing martyr Clara Maass 1876-1901 who during the Spanish-American War in which yellow fever killed more combatants than combat volunteered for yellow fever experiments to determine the cause of the disease; bitten by the mosquitoes that carry the disease she became the only American to die as a result of the experiments and the public furor roused by her death brought an end to this first-ever case of informed consent human experimentation; on the 50th anniversary of her death Cuba issued a stamp in her honor and on the 100th anniversary of her birth she was a charter inductee in the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame and the United States issued a stamp in her honor. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled at Belleville New Jersey on August 18 1976 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Fine. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address present. Single 13-cent "Clara Maass / She gave her life" stamp at upper right. Down the center vertically Maass's sister signs boldly and in full in black ballpoint. Quite nice. Also present is a stiff beige 6¼" X 3½" card unsigned on which de Cordova notes "I am also enclosing two 2-cent Cuban stamps that the Cuban government issued in 1951" and below this is affixed two pristine examples of this stamp. De Cordova's name/address label DeBary Florida is also affixed. Portion of original transmittal envelope cancelled 22 November 1976 present. Nice pair of both issues honoring this nurse signed by the only known surviving sibling 75 years after her sister's tragic death. unknown

This Roman Catholic-turned-Presbyterian clergyman emigrated to America from Italy in 1888 and was soon named evangelical pastor of The Presbyterian Institutional Church where he became influential in converting New England Italians to Presbyterianism and was named to the high office of Superintendent of the Presbytery; in 1914 he moved to Chicago where he became pastor and director of the noted Saint John Presbyterian Church. Signed Program titled "Saint John Presbyterian Church. Program Dedication Week" small 4to 6" X 9¼" stiff pictorial wrappers Chicago Illinois 1930 May 18-25. Very good. Quit minor edgewear but overall tight and attractive. Handsome 12-page program for the dedication and opening of this new church. On the large margin beneath an oval frontispiece head-and-shoulders portrait of DeCarlo he signs in full large and bold in black fountain pen. Most of program consists of special services throughout the dedication week. Quite attractive and unusual. paperback

By way of illustration accompanied by a superb 3½" X 5½" picture postcard showing Devine and Guy Madison in buckskin outfits guns drawn in their roles as "Wild Bill Hickok and Jingles" their popular Western series from 1951-58 with facsimile signatures of each below their images. Postally cancelled in Los Angeles on 4 May 1953 and addressed to Donald Burnell recipient of the above inscription from Devine. A fun pair. unknown

Marked "Private" this curious and lengthy letter showing Dilke's perplexity at the review copies of books that his wife had been receiving from Heinemann: "My wife has never reviewed a word in her life so far as she can remember altho' in the early days of the 'Saturday Review' she wrote in it upon most other topics. My wife is not even indirectly interested in English books for she has no time to read them with the exception of those of one or two personal friends and has less knowledge of the modern English book than the the ordinary reader. unknown

Very good. Minor wear bit of soiling and couple of acid spots from editorial staples. "Who's Who in America" updating form consisting of Douglas' typed biographical entry for the 1946-47 edition bearing several additions in her hand and her full signature in black ink at the close. Also bearing various editors' markings in green blue and red ink and pencil. Comes with 5 other related typed documents none signed from Douglas' "Who's Who" records -- a carbon of the above document a 2-page mimeographed chronology no doubt sent by Douglas' congressional office a biographical data form and so on. A fascinating and unusual accompanied by a scarce original 1947 glossy 6½" X 8½" news agency photograph of Douglas carrying a basket of groceries to the House of Representatives. unknown

TNS 1p 7¼" X 10¼" Los Angeles CA 19 November 1940. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Fine. On buff imprinted letterhead Douglas thanks an admirer. In part: "As a matter of fact no thanks are really needed -- the results of the election compensated for anything I may have accomplished." Boldly signed in black ink. Douglas and his wife were both staunch Democrats and Gates likely thanked Douglas for helping securing a strong turnout for Roosevelt in California. Comes with a superb 10" X 8" glossy photograph a still scene from the 1936 film "Theodora Goes Wild" showing Douglas romancing Irene Dunne as a dog observes. Near fine. Double-spaced typescript of one page from an unidentified work possibly a musical comedy -- a dialogue between Polly and Douglas. Duncan has pencilled out words and phrases here and there changed a word. He signs boldly in ink near the bottom. This came from the collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. Johannsen was fond of requesting working manuscript pages from authors -- this Duncan leaf is clearly one such example. Most unusual and attractive -- and worthy of further research. unknown

42436This successful Ohio-born industrialist investor and businessman practiced law and entered politics in New Mexico serving in Congress 1873-77; he served in the Union Army during the Civil War father and brother joined the Confederacy and was filled with disgust over the carnage and cruelty he witnessed so when Benjamin Harrison appointed him Secretary of War in 1891 no one felt the irony more than he but he served until 1893; later he served West Virginia as U.S. Senator 1895-1911. Big bold "With regards of / S.B. Elkins / Nov 10./85" on a 5 3/4" X 2" heavy stock buff slip n.p. Very good. Bit of irregular inoffensive offsetting from long-ago acidic contact. Judging from the paper stock almost certainly the top portion of a pamphlet likely of a speech Elkins gave such as the 1885 "The Industrial Question in the United States" an address he gave before the Alumni Association of the University of the State of Missouri June 3 1885 published in 36 pages by Styles & Cash in New York. On letterhead of the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company the newly-named president and chairman begs off writing a newspaper article: ".until the company can get its affairs adjusted with the Federal authorities and its finances on a better basis I have hardly any time for other matters." 41560The quarter-century director of the University of Iowa's world-renowned Iowa Writers' Workshop was that state's best-known poet debuting with "Worn Earth" in 1932 and concluding a dozen volumes later with "Images of China" in 1980. TLS 1p 5½" X 8" Iowa City IA 4 December 1956. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman 1912-98 founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Near fine. Friendly meaty single-space letter filled with memorable phrases. Of his schedule he remarks: "I have been off lecturing in St. Louis to 1500 teachers of English with the girls up to their accents in orchids the University of Minnesota with the blonde girls looking as if they wore sunlight on their heads instead of hair and a Catholic girl's school with the girls showing the exhilarating effects of a steady diet of prayer and prunes." On the possibility of visiting Newman in Chicago he mentions "taking a train to Houghton Michigan to lecture to the College of Mining there to rub the noses of the students of engineering in poetry while they rub my nose in the snow." He even works in creative writing as when he notes "It was fine to have you all in Iowa City and especially pleasant to feel that all of you were interested in this university's devotion to the creative act which is of course the beginning of all books."
