Bold "To Donald / All Good Wishes / Henry Fonda" in thick blue fountain pen on an irregular roughly oval-shaped 4" X 2½" slip n.p. n.y. Good plus. In addition to add trimming there are several small scotch tape stains at the edges not affecting signature and only slightly touching the "T" in "To." Accompanied by a superb glossy 8" X 10" publicity photograph from the 1947 film "The Fugitive" a half-length portrait of Fonda in white shirt and tie gazing over the back of the chair in which he's seated. Bit of edgewear. In part: "I am very happy that you liked 'MRS. FAIR' and regret that I was not there to hear you say so. I am out here watching my nine year old who went rather to the bad physically becoming an expert on a horse and in the water and in consequence am very happy. I didn't think anything could add much to my feeling of content until I received the wire. It added not a little to the general joy." Thomas may have attended the premiere of "The Fabulous Mrs. Fair" which debuted about this time. Forbes' pleasure and relief at Thomas's congratulatory telegram can well be imagined for Thomas was a theatre heavyweight whose opinion could affect a new play's success. unknown

Writing on stationery bearing an oval blind-embossed "House of Commons" imprint in his bold sloppy but legible hand the newly-elected m.p. writes a constituent about a touchy church issue: "I would willingly help you if I could for I think it would be very lamentable to have the peace of the Congregation disturbed by the introduction of Ritualistic preachers. But I feel sure that any interference on my part with the patronage of the Prime Minister would be looked on by him as rather an impertinence & would do more harm than good. Would it not be well to bring on the part of influential members of the Congregation the facts mentioned in your letter under his notice This seems to me the best plan you can adopt for preventing the appointment of a Clergyman whose views would be distressful of the majority." Attractive color magazine portrait depicting Gable's widow in turquoise dress and matching headband seated in an oversize white wicker chair holding the son born a few month's after her husband's death -- baby Gable holds both hands up as if in shock and has an expression of amazement on his face. She inscribes this in a thick fountain pen almost the same color as her turquoise outfit: "To Donald Burnell / Luck and happiness / From / John Clark Gable and his Mother / Age 2 weeks 1961." The aforementioned speech is also present a 14-page illustrated pamphlet 4" X 9" published by The Indiana State Chamber of Commerce in 1946. Fine. Titled "When Will Congress Talk Back" and boldly signed and inscribed by Gates on the front wrapper to Gates. Fine. In this speech delivered before the Hoosier State Press Association in 5 April 1946 Gates states his belief in taking back to the state and local level responsibilities which the federal government assumed during the Depression and war years. ALS 2pp separate leaves 8½" X 11" Racine WI 12 April 1933. Addressed to John G. Leiser. Near fine. On bright yellow onionskin-type paper penned in vibrant purple ink Gleason writes this admirer an Illinois school teacher with advice about studying and painting birds. In part: "I am happy to hear that you love to study birds and that you have a nature study class. To me the study is a great source of pleasure. I try to see in the study of birds symbols of the wonders of all nature. I try to bring thru their study a harmonious relation of the contradictory elements of experience. Hence my preoccupation is with the physical reality of my medium color and drawing thru the character of the motive I try to proportion into pleasurable relations the color with the various forms and in harmony with associations we thru common experience bring to it. Probably nothing delights the eye o man more than a beautiful bird and for the past several years I have found great pleasure in going out early in the morning sketching birds. In order to paint any particular bird one must first study for size proportion character color etc." Goes into much further detail on painting birds noting near the close "I have only one book published known as 'Birds We Know" and signing boldly. 37730Gleave was a famed R.A.F. fighter pilot shot down during the Battle of Britain and horribly burned -- which in turn made him famous as "Chief Guinea Pig" to famed New Zealand pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe; Simpson was a R.A.F. bomber pilot shot down over Belgium in 1940 suffering severe facial and hand burns -- and he too became famous as another of McIndoe's "guinea pigs." Signed Commemorative Envelope 7½" X 4½" n.p. cancelled on 20 July 1982. Fine. Left half is filled with a color cachet depicting Battle of Britain fighters above which is a portrait of Archibald McIndoe and the caption "41st Anniversary of the Guinea Pig Club 20 July 1982" with explanatory text at right describing the commemorative flight on which this envelope was carried. At upper right near the special circular Guinea Pig Club cancellation Gleave and Simpson each sign in blue ballpoint.
