Korn had asked Haverlin a founding member of the Civil War Round Table of New York to help him organize a Civil War Round Table or Lincoln Fellowship group in Philadelphia but Haverlin wasn't available. "It's awfully good of you to suggest someone else from your group. I have never met Boyd Stutler the John Brown scholar but have had some correspondence with him. Fletcher Pratt of course I know by reputation. I am sure that either would do well although I am not sure whether any one of them knows as well as you the organizational problems or the difficulty in creating programs." Handsome full signature. Single leaf from the "Congressional Record" containing a two-page address by this representative entitled "The Supreme Court Is Your Guardian of Liberty" delivered on the floor of the House on 4 March 1937. Lamneck here addresses President Roosevelt's enlarge the Supreme Court in an effort to push through his New Deal measures an effort that failed. On blue-imprinted "Executive Mansion" letterhead Lamont does something he no doubt did on countless occasions on the president's behalf: Decline an invitation this time from the persistent mayor of Lowell Massachusetts. In part: "The President directs me to. thank you for the courtesy of the invitation conveyed therein to go to Lowell on June 6th upon the occasion of the visit there of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. He has however been obliged to decline the latter's invitation to attend the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the organization on June 4th.:" Boldly signed at the conclusion. 38964This officer with the USAAF's 364th Bomb Squadron was flying his B-17 Flying Fortress over Nazi-controlled Europe when it was attacked and disabled whereupon he ordered his crew to parachute to safety while he managed to fly the craft with two crew too injured to parachute to a crash landing in friendly territory -- for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Heavy stock printed "Medal of Honor Recipient" card 6" X 4" with his printed full name and rank and the date of his heroic act "Over Europe / February 20 1944". Above his name Lawley signs large and bold in pencil. Fine. This attractive card is accompanied by a heavy stock 8½" X 13½" unsigned reproduction of aviation artist J.G. Keck's head-and-shoulders portrait of a young Lawley in uniform. Fine. A superb pair. unknown

Mild bit of soiling; minor mounting trace on blank 4th leaf. On ornate "Executive Chamber" letterhead Lee replies to a cryptic request. In part: "Your favor to the Governor is received. I am directed to say that he cannot give you the desired information By applying to Genl. Meigs Q.M. General U.S. Army you can probably ascertain when the book can be found." 20160This "Chicago Times" sports cartoonist hit the big time with his 1932 creation "Grin and Bear It" which became nationally syndicated and kept him at the drawing board until 1974. Signed print 5¼" X 6½" n.p. n.d. Near fine. Interesting glossy "slick" in printer's parlance of a daily "Grin and Bear It" installment: Three road workers with a pickup truck full of "Historical Site" plaques -- one holds a plaque and points enquiringly at a spot in the dirt while another barks out "No need to be too accurate about where you put them men. there's always arguments about those things anyway!." The artist boldly inscribed is above their image: "TO / WARREN / REEDER / my best / Lichty." Reeder was a well-known Indiana realtor autograph collector and author of the 1972 book "No Performances Today: An Account of the Events Leading Up to and Following the Train Wreck of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus Train". Unusual form a "slick" being an in-house production proof copy this one bearing two registration marks at the left margin. unknown

Lightly age toned with inoffensive staple hole at upper left not affecting text and small chip at upper right corner. "I shall be glad to have you use the photograph of me made by Pirie MacDonald in the booklet you are preparing and you are hereby granted permission to secure this from the photographer." Boldly signed in blue with his usual "H.N. MacCracken." The noted New York portrait photographer 1867-1942 -- known as "Photographer of Men" for he only photographed males -- shot anyone who was anyone in that area for decades and MacCracken sat for him in 1924. Owen was perhaps a publicity or marketing person working up a Vassar promotional brochure. unknown

"Mr. Macready presents his Compts. to Mr. Woolf -- would be very happy to see him for a few minutes conversation either this evening after ten o'Clock or tomorrow morning. Red wax seal on integral address portion bears "Royal Covent Garden Theatre" imprint. This theatre was the site of Macready's first London appearance as Orestes in a production of Racine's "The Distressed Mother" in September 1816 -- but the 1836 watermark on this sheet likely dates this letter to 1838-39 when he served as manager of this theatre. "1855" penned minutely in another hand along right border. Very good. On letterhead of the "Illinois Woman's Press Association" which lists Malek as that organization's president Malek asks for assistance on an IWPA matter from another member. In part: "Will you please send out these letters Suppose you have a new list Miss Knight will help about envelopes so please see that she has all names. Our room is 633 Fine Arts Bldg.
