Centennial -- and then they ignored the winner after all. Also competed in competition for the Gettysburg Cent. and the American Dental Ass'n Centennial. Had left the Bureau of Engraving in Wash. where I had engraved all or parts of nine stamps in 1947 for private employment w/a banknote co. in Phila where I had opportunity of working on several hundred during next 15 years. The Howells referred to was almost certainly novelist William Dean Howells. This followup letter Ade certainly answered for his huge "ans" for "answered" is pencilled boldly in his distinctive hand at the upper left corner. unknown
31968Copper boom town Butte Montana notorious as a lawless town filled with bars and brothels began to turn around when this noted Butte merchant a progressive Republican was elected mayor in 1935 until 1941 and proclaimed in his inaugural address "It is doubtful if any city is in a more deplorable physical and financial condition" and set about to clean up the town. On "City of Butte" letterhead noting "Office of Mayor" Hauswirth writes "It is with pleasure that I add my name to your list of signatures." He signs in full in bold green ink. Faintly age toned. On letterhead of "Office of Morton Bliss & Co." Hiscock fulfills some unnamed request: "I acknowledge the honor of your request and comply with great pleasure." Boldly penned in brown ink. Quite strange that the seated U.S. Senator would be writing on letterhead of this banking firm founded by the man who in 1887 Hiscock defeated in the caucus for the New York senate seat -- former representative and ambassador and then- current vice president Levi P. Morton. Odd that -- and the significance if any is unclear. unknown

Near fine. Cordial note to a friend: "I am on my way to your family at Newport and will go with them to White Mountains. I cannot hope to accept your kind offer this Summer unless perhaps for a single day when I can stop over on going between Albany and Newport. I read your speech this morning with great pleasure." Horn gave this lovely address as president of the University of Rhode Island before the Rhode Island General Assembly on February 12th Lincoln's birthday. Accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed from him 1p 5½" X 8½" Kingston RI 1960 February 23. Addressed to Arnold Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Fine. "I am sending you my address on Lincoln at the request of Charles O'Neill" writes Horn. ".He is particularly interested in the paragraph at the bottom of page 3. I am hoping that the Rhode Island legislature will take action on my suggestion." Which consists of: "Lincoln's two addresses in Rhode Island are of such significance in our history that I hope the State will both commemorate the occasions with some ceremony on the centennial anniversary and mark with a suitable plaque or monument the places where these historic addresses were delivered." Signed boldly in full in black ink. Horn 1908-99 was an educator who served as president of this university from 1958 to 1967 and spearheaded many advancements for that institution.
