Sommières s. d. circa 1970 15 x 10 cm une carte postale Autograph postcard signed by Lawrence Durrell addressed to Jani Brun written in black felt-tip pen on the verso of a view of the banks of the Vidourle at Sommières. Admirable and humorous confession by the writer to his young lover: ""Tout le monde cherche quelqu'un de fidèle tout en restant 'libre' en échange ! Bientôt je serai impuissant et le problème n'existera plus !"" ""Everyone is looking for someone faithful while remaining 'free' in return! Soon I will be impotent and the problem will no longer exist!"". Durrell reflects on his numerous feminine conquests ""Pour l'instant je suis comblé de belles et j'en profite - pourquoi pas !"" ""For now I am overwhelmed with beauties and I'm taking advantage of it - why not!"" and gives precious advice to his addressee who had chosen to remain independent despite the writer's entreaties: ""Tu n'es pas heureuse en amour parce que tu es intéressée - tu cherche sic des combines toujours au lieu de te donner sans réserve ni réservation ! C'est quand on deviens sic esclave qu'on est vraiment heureux !"" ""You are not happy in love because you are self-interested - you are always looking for schemes instead of giving yourself without reserve or reservation! It's when one becomes a slave that one is truly happy!"" After many years spent in Greece Egypt and Rhodes the traveler-writer Lawrence Durrell was forced to flee Cyprus following popular uprisings that led the island to its independence from the British crown. Rich only in a shirt and a typewriter but crowned with the success of his novel Bitter Lemons of Cyprus he arrived in 1956 in France and settled in the Languedoc village of Sommières. In the ""maison Tartès"" his large house surrounded by trees he wrote the second part of his work his monumental Avignon Quintet devoted himself to painting and received his illustrious friends including the couple Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin violinist Yehudi Menuhin London publisher Alan G. Thomas and his two daughters Penelope and Sappho. Among the olive trees and under the Mediterranean sun he met in the mid-1960s the young and sparkling ""Jany"" Janine Brun a thirty-something from Montpellier of devastating beauty who worked at the Department of Antiquities at the Sorbonne in Paris. She was nicknamed ""Buttons"" in memory of their first meeting when the young woman wore a dress covered with buttons. Henry Miller also fell under the charm of ""Buttons"" praising her beauty and eternal youth in exceptional unpublished letters. The three companions spent memorable Parisian evenings of which we retain precious autograph traces through their epistolary exchanges. Recommended by Durrell she made numerous trips notably to England from where she received extensive correspondence from the writer as well as original works of art signed with his artistic pseudonym Oscar Epfs. unknown

Paris juillet 1887 11.20 x 14.20 cm une carte-lettre Autograph signed letter-card from Pierre Louÿs addressed to his brother Georges Louis with whom Pierre Louÿs maintained a very intimate relationship and whom he considered as his own father. The question of Pierre Louÿs's real paternal identity still fascinates biographers today: ""His father Pierre Philippe Louis . had married in 1842 Jeanne Constance Blanchin who died ten years later after having given him two children Lucie and Georges. In 1855 he remarried Claire Céline Maldan and from this union was born in 1857 a son Paul; then in 1870 our writer who received the first names Pierre Félix. This late birth the differences in character between father and son the former's disaffection toward the latter the profound intimacy that always reigned between Louÿs and his brother Georges all this has led certain biographers and critics to suspect that the latter was in reality the writer's father. The exceptionally intimate and constant relationship that Pierre and Georges maintained between them throughout their lives could be an argument in this sense. Of course no irrefutable proof has been discovered and none probably ever will be. Nevertheless certain letters . are quite troubling. In 1895 for example Louÿs writes seriously to his brother that he knows the answer to 'the most poignant question' he could ask him a question he has had 'on his lips for ten years.' The following year in the full triumph of Aphrodite he thanks Georges effusively and ends his letter with this sentence: 'Not one of my friends has a FATHER who is for him what you are for me.' Arguing from the close intimacy of Georges and Claire Céline during the year 1870 and from the jealousy that the father never ceased to show toward his younger son Claude Farrère did not hesitate to conclude in favor of Georges Louis. And what to think of this dedication from Louÿs to his brother on a Japan paper copy of the first edition of Pausole: For Georges his eldest son / Pierre."" Jean-Paul Goujon Pierre Louÿs Brief note to his brother upon arrival in Epernay: ""Rien de nouveau. Personne à la gare. J'ai fait très bon voyage. Mon bouquin était mourant d'ennui et mes trois voisins aussi. Je t'embrasse. Pierre"" ""Nothing new. Nobody at the station. I had a very good journey. 40509This well-rounded California pastor railroad man actor playwright and lecturer was a popular short story writer and novelist "Those Who Have Come Back" 1914 "Tongues of Flame" 1924 and penned the scripts for the films "Guiles of Women" 1921 starring Will Rogers and "A Pair of Hellions" 1924. TMS 1p 8½" X 11" Pacific Grove CA 1923 March 8. Near fine. Actual working draft page p. 23 from a short story titled "Mercy" which was published in the May 1923 issue of "Cosmopolitan" magazine. Typed double spaced with numerous additions deletions and corrections. Along the wide right margin vertically Macfarlane signs large and bold in full in black ink adding date and place and noting "a page from the MS of / 'Mercy' Cosmopolitan for / May 1923." Content concerns a minister named Robert N. Mason confessing a sexual crime to a friend George Fawcett during a nighttime drive through what seems suspiciously like heading north from Macfarlane's home in Pacific Grove: In part "The city of E____ enjoys a climate that has bland moments. This was one of them. It was a black velvety all-enveloping sort of night -- the very night for confidences; and the car was turned north away from the city away from the lights away north endlessly north into the open country. The minister apparently suffering the greatest distress with something upon his heart that demanded expression seemed nevertheless quite unable to utter himself." Interestingly about a year after this was signed on June 9 1924 Macfarlane bought a gun at a local gun shop said goodbye to wife and children and drove north to San Francisco where he put a bullet in his head outside the San Francisco morgue. The reason for his suicide at age 53 Diabetes. From the collection of Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen requested working draft pages from authors so it's possible this manuscript leaf predates its 1923 date by quite a bit. Also present is Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown
