Writing to this noted solicitor Thompson declines an invitation: "The important business which will engage the attention of Parliament on the 10th Feby will prevent me having the honor of dining with the friends of the London Dispensary on the occasion of the anniversary meeting." Interesting a blank portion at lower right bears a lightly-pencilled note in the hand of pioneering autograph dealer Charles Hamilton misidentifying this document as being in the hand of a different William Thompson "d. 1833 Irish economist; supported Robt Owen; wrote 'Distribution of Wealth". unknown

The binding is considerably worn and bumped at the corners and edges. The spine is toned. Outer edges of the text block are darkened or heavily toned. Heavy foxing to the end papers. The front pastedown has a slip of paper pasted in which has typed names and dates apparently as part of a reading club. The pages show occasional spotting and foxing throughout. Several beginning pages have small holes close to the spine. The text is otherwise clean and sound. INSCRIBED by the author on the front end paper "For Martha & Ray Butler / In the fellowship of a common interest the textile industry-- / Thelma Thompson / May 1941." On decorative blue "Juvenile Temples of Wales I.O.G.T." letterhead which lists Thomas as "General Superintendent" and on which he has crossed out his hometown of Carnarvon and inserted "New York" Thomas pens in his big bold hand "I have been quite delighted in visiting Peabody Salem & Massachusetts." In 1876 in Louisville Kentucky Thomas was elected Grant Treasurer of the Supreme Grand Lodge of the World so perhaps he was on an earlier tour of American Good Templar locations. Folds inherent to mailing. The letter appears to be unpublished not mentioned in the Correspondance Générale de Théophile Gautier edited by Claudine Lacoste-Veysseyre under the direction of Pierre Laubriet Droz Geneva-Paris 12 vol. 1985-2000. Rare glimpse into Gautier's private life the letter captures the anguish that struck the author and his family during the Paris Commune. Separated from his family by the Prussian invasion of 1870 and the Parisian insurrections of 1871 Théophile Gautier confides the extent of his torments both financial and due to the Paris Commune to his ""dear sweetheart"" his younger daughter Estelle Gautier: ""I may yet manage to recover from this collapse . I am happy that these atrocious ordeals have been spared you. For my part I nearly lost my life and I am still not in brilliant condition"". Gautier's usual supporters are evident here through the names of academician Camille Doucet and dancer Carlotta Grisi. The virulence of the fighting between communards and repressive forces can be sensed in the evocation of Gautier's sister Emilie called ""Lili"": ""Lili is still in her cellar. Coming out is too perilous but she will be delivered within a few days. Alas! Very long ones"". Characteristic of the personal register rare in Gautier's correspondence the letter is imbued with the paternal love the author bears for his family: ""What a celebration when we are all reunited for my heart suffers greatly from this dispersion"". unknown

Gautier adopts an astonishing working format revealing the intimate / particular process of writing where flying sheets of different sizes very tight writing and corrections and inks of different colors come together. Originally intended for a publication in the press Gautier's article itself seduced by Spanish exoticism satisfies the search for picturesque then at its peak in France: "" The perpetual carousel of the fans that open close throb and flap like butterflies trying to land; the elbow movements of the women grouping themselves in their mantillas and correcting the inflection of an unsightly fold; the glances launched from one cross to the other to the people of knowledge; the pretty nod of the head and the graceful gesture which accompanies the agur by which the senhoras reply to the horsemen who salute them; the colorful crowd intertwined with Gallegos Pasiegas Valencians Manolas and water vendors "" Gautier establishes links between known references to Spain: Don Quixote and finds picaresque resonances in the adventures he saw: They were men Beyond the simple satisfaction of the public Gautier offers a glimpse of the Spanish character and bon vivant: sobriety and the patience of the Spaniards to endure fatigue is something that is prodigious. They remained Arabs on this point. One can not go further than the oblivion of material life. But these soldiers who lacked bread and shoes had a guitar. unknown

Addressed to Robert Brent Pay Master General of the U.S. Army. Very good. Mild age toning. Good content appeal on behalf of the wife of a War of 1812 substitute soldier who died in battle. Reads in part: "There are in this vicinity two or three instances where persons served in the detached militia from this state in 1812 as substitutes whose names do not appear on the roll they having answered to the names of those who were drafted. These persons died in the service leaving widows. the widows claims for 5 years half pay is admissable as making proof of their services. permit me to remark in their behalf. it would be extremely unjust to exclude a claim merely because the officer should improperly suffer the name of the drafted man to remain upon the roll." Very interesting discussion of the dilemma of widows of substitute soldiers. unknown
15881The daughter of one of Abraham Lincoln's law partners and his presidential bodyguard Ward Hill Lamon 1828-93 she pieced together and edited her father's book "Recollections of Abraham Lincoln 1847-1865" Chicago 1895; a bawdy and not particularly popular companion to the president Lamon authored it was actually ghostwritten an 1872 "Life of Abraham Lincoln" that's considered the first debunking biography of the president. PS 8½" X 11" n.p. 1945 November 4. Very good. Small glue stain at upper right well away from image. This most unusual PS does not depict Teillard herself but rather is a thermofax copy of a 3½" X 3½" portrait of a young Ward Hill Lamon centered and with large margins. Early head-and-shoulders portrait showing a youthful Lamon with long curly hair and flowing goatee. On the ample lower margin his daughter inscribes it big and bold: "With regards of / Dorothy Lamon Teillard / November 4 1945." Though written while well into her 80s Teillard's script is fluid and attractive. A quite uncommon autograph in an unusual form. unknown
39656This Russian-born American composer ended up in France after the Russian Revolution where he performed and composed prolifically -- symphonies orchestral pieces piano concertos operas ballet and choral music; post-WW2 he emigrated to Chicago where he taught and composed. Remarkably beautiful ALS 1p 6" X 11" Vanves France n.y. likely early 1930s. Near fine. On a lovely heavy tannish tissue paper Tcherepnine pens in his usual miniscule script and black ink a note to unidentified "Cher ami" in French referring to the first performance of his new work "Suite georgienne" and the Salle de l'ancienne Conservatoire in Paris; he switches to English briefly near the close when noting trying to reach someone by telephone "but was unsuccessfull!" This handsome note occupies only a small central portion at the right margin much of this sheet being filled with an extraordinary partly hand-drawn and partly inkstamped color drawing presumably Japanese depicting a monkey descending the branches of a tree bearing numerous orange flowers against a pale blue background. Wonderfully executed in pale soft colors. At lower right and lower left are small inkstamped insignias that we assume indicate the artist. A truly exceptional letter from the young composer. unknown
