18013Cartooning duo who produced the popular "There Oughta Be a Law" syndicated comic strip 1963-81 begun by Al Fagaly in 1944 through 1963. Original India ink drawing 1p 12½" X 9¼" n.p. 1976 December 23. Near fine. Single panel depicting what we assume to be the cartoonists themselves their features are mostly hidden hard at work before drafting tables. Under the heading "Last-Minute Gift Suggestion Dep't." one of the pair asks "What can I get for my wife that's quite expensive but not too flashy" The other replies "How about a jar of instant coffee" Conclusion: "Today's LAW: 'And nothing is stirring in our house either!'" Pencilled draft faintly visible beneath. In addition to the neatly lettered "Whipple and Borth" signature at lower left this piece is signed a second time in "think pink" ink. unknown

Titled "for Billy Doris Queenie Donna June and John" this is an original probably one-of-a-kind quatrain written especially for a small class of disabled school children thanking them in verse: "Thank you for your message and / The thank-you picture made by hand / Thank you each and every one -- / I hope you have a lot of fun." Somewhat tremulous but bold easily legible and attractive. A charming example of the vintage versifier's graciousness. unknown

16589This Connecticut legislator and civil servant served as Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson 1861-69. ADS 1p 8" X 9½" n.p. 1848 August. Very good. Attractive pale blue lined sheet. Welles at this time chief of the bureau of provisions and clothing for the U.S. Navy requests a $150 advance for costs incurred in traveling from Washington to Auburn New York to attend the case of United States vs. L. Caldwell as well as reimbursement for two past trips. Signed with his usual cramped "GWelles." This item is accompanied by an exceptional and scarce 8" X 10" glossy photograph a full-length portrait possibly from a Mathew Brady negative made circa 1950 by pioneering photography historian FREDERICK HILL MESERVE 1865-1962 "America's first great photograph collector" who assigned numbers to Lincoln photographs "Meserve numbers" that are still used today. This striking image was quite likely made from the original glass plate negative as was Meserve's habit. It is identified on the verso in pencil in Meserve's distinctive hand: "Gideon Welles / The Meserve Collection." A handsome document and a highly desireable accompanying image. unknown

With original envelope. Accompanied by a superb original black-and-white glossy 9" X 7" news agency photograph. Choice image of a seated President Eisenhower at center of his entire cabinet seated to his sides and standing behind him. Original printed text neatly attached to verso dates this January 12 1953 and under the headline "Eisenhower and Full Cabinet Meet for First Time" the scene is described: "President-Elect Dwight Eisenhower today assembled for the first time his entire cabinet to chart the course his administration will steer when it takes over the reins of government in eight days." All are identified and Weeks is standing ar rear between Ike's assistant Sherman Adams and Secretary of Interior Douglas McKay. Near fine. An outstanding pair. unknown

On Department of the Army letterhead Wedemeyer graciously transmits a signed photograph not present. Comes with a fine 8" X 10" glossy news agency photograph of 1947 showing Wedemeyer in civvies entering the White House "to report to President Truman on his recent mission in the Far East" -- itself a scarce image. 14695Influential British locomotive engineer executive and innovator; as Locomotive Superintendent of the London & North Western Railway Company from 1871 to 1903 his word was law and in the city of Crewe where the L. & N.W.R. operated its "Crewe Works" he was known as "The King of Crewe." Rare signed production photograph most likely a heliotype heavy stock 24" X 16" Crewe England 1891. Very good. Light even age toning except verso where acidic backing has darkened unevenly; several small archivally closed on verso edge tears; very slight waviness at some edges. This piece actually consists of three separate images tipped to the heavy 24" X 16" sheet: Center image 14" X 11½" shows this locomotive in close-up profile left side image 3½" X 11½" shows a frontal view and right side image also 3½" X 11½" shows a rear view. Titled "Eight-Wheeled Compound Express Passenger Locomotive" in large typeface below the center image with "F.W. Webb's System" below that in smaller typeface and two lines of technical statistics at the bottom "High-pressure Cylinders 15 in. diam. x 24 in. stroke. Low-pressure Cylinder 30 in. diam. x 24 in. stroke. Driving Wheels 7 ft. 1 in. diam. / Leading Wheels radial. Fixed Wheel base 8 ft. 3 in. Trailing Wheels ½ in. side play.". In the latter part of the 19th century Webb took a leading role in the development of compound locomotives -- those in which the steam operates more than one set of cylinders. The locomotive depicted here is part of the "Greater Britain" class a type of eight-wheeled express engine featuring an extra long combustion chamber and distinguished by their 7 foot 1 inch driving wheel; of these Webb designed ten models. The first of these appeared in 1891 -- and may well be the version depicted in this print. At the lower right corner above the printed text "Crewe Works 1891" Webb signs big and bold. Verso of this print bears an oval inkstamp of the L. & N.W.R. Mechanical Engineer's Office dated 30 September 1893. A superb and significant piece ideal for display. unknown

22771The youngest daughter full name Anna Cabot Lodge Quincy Waterston of Boston Mayor and Harvard president Josiah Quincy dabbled in the arts writing poems "Verses" 1863 nonfiction "Adelaide Phillipps: A Record" 1883 and Unitarian hymns; in 2003 her diary was published "A Woman's Wit & Whimsy: The 1833 Diary of Anna Cabot Lodge Quincy" chronicling the life of a 21-year-old aristocrat on the Harvard campus. Bold attractive "With many pleasant memories / of our visit to your happy and / beautiful home I shall / always be your affectionate friend / Anna C.L. Waterston / Fort Washington / 1862" on a 5" X 3¼" slip. Near fine. It's interesting that Fort Washington 16 miles south of Washington DC was built in June of that year 1863 for the New York State Militia during the Gettysburg Campaign so clearly this must have been penned there in the months immediately following its construction. 31333This leading man of crime and drama left the Chicago stage to appear in more than 300 films mostly silents starting at the Essanay Studios in 1913 right when they switched from their Chicago base to a California location; he often appeared in supporting roles in talkies finally retiring in 1947. IPS 3¼" X 5" n.p. 1913. Near fine. Superb sepia-tone oval-shaped head-and-shoulders portrait of a handsome young Washburn in suit and tie. Across his chest he boldly inscribes and signs in a dark ink: "Very Sincerely / Bryant Washburn / 'Essanay' / 1913." Washburn had just signed on with the up-and-coming Chicago firm -- he was local talent -- which was founded in 1907 and made its name largely with Charlie Chaplin and Ben Turpin comedies. A choice example dated from the first days of his long film career. unknown
21258This famed hybridizer was legendary in the specialized world of rose cultivation and served as director of research for Jackson & Perkins the renowned California rose cultivator; he was responsible for developing an astonishing 110 rose varieties two of which "Medallion" and "Red Masterpiece" were chosen by the U.S. Post Office for a special stamp issued in 1978. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Shreveport Louisiana on July 11 1978 and with "First Day of Issue" marked. Eight 15-cent rose stamps affixed. No decorative cachet or distracting recipient's name/address. Warriner signs boldly in black ballpoint right on the "sweet spot." Extremely attractive and surprisingly uncommon. ALS 1p 5¼" X 6¼" Paris France November n.y. Very good. Would be fine but for removal of topmost edge perhaps ½ possibly to remove recipient's name -- though still complete with salutation intact. Gracious invitation to one of Walsh's famed salon evenings reading in part: ".our friend the Revd Mr. Baird expressed to me the wish. that I should make your acquaintance and that of Monsieur Nicolas the eminent theological writer. I have called on you but was not so fortunate as to find you at home. it will afford me much pleasure to see you & Mr. Nicholas at my apartment tomorrow evening. You will meet with some society which may prove agreeable to you & him." And by the way b.y.o.b. "Revd. Mr. Baird" was likely one of the famous American Presbyterian clergymen Robert or one of his sons Charles Washington or Henry Martyn. Bold and attractive. unknown
1515This Democratic politician served Massachusetts both as its 46th governor 1914-16 and as senator 1919-47. TNS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 1937 April 14. Addressed to future Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. Light original horizontal folds. On "United States Senate" letterhead Walsh transmits present a signed copy of a recently-delivered speech. Accompanied by aforementioned speech an 8vo 8-page "Congressional Record" offprint titled "Reorganization of Federal Judiciary" being the text of the senator's radio address delivered at Carnegie Hall in New York on March 12 1937. In this fiery speech Walsh denounces President Roosevelt's controversial court-packing scheme. Signed large and bold near the bottom of the self-cover along with "Compliments of." Walsh was a well-known critic of FDR's plan to enlarge the Supreme Court making this signed memento particularly desireable. unknown

Original cartoon in black ink signed simply "W" at lower right heavy stock 7" X 3¼" sheet n.p. n.y. Wallgren's Drexel Hill Pennsylvania home address lightly inkstamped on verso. Near fine. Charming scene -- perhaps a "Helpful Hunts" installment -- depicting two soldiers side by side at a table the G.I. at left showing the G.I. at right how to open a bottle of French wine. "See!!" he says as he thumps the underside of the bottle and the cork strikes with a "Pop" in his friend's eye. Cream 8½" X 6½" mat with 5¼" X 2½" opening. Wallgren's early work is surprisingly scarce and this is a delightful example. unknown

AMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. On custom letterhead Walden neatly prints the name of his latest novel -- "The Voodoo Gold Trail / by / Walter Walden" -- plus title of the first chapter and a lengthy section of the first couple paragraphs signing a second time boldly at the conclusion. While the admirer who wrote him requested an actual working manuscript page Walden instead has neatly written out this passage -- though likely he copied it off of his original manuscript for it bears words and phrases which he's crossed out. From the collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. Also present is a copy of "The Voodoo Gold Trail" Boston: Small Maynard & Company 1922 a very good first edition of this small 8vo volume in blue cloth. unknown
