Near fine. Neatly expertly inlaid. Nice personal content. In part: "I should have had very great pleasure in accepting your kind invitation but my father who is eighty six years of age has been suddenly attacked in such a manner as to give us hope to apprehend that I may not be able to go out a fortnight. and do not want to have you in uncertainty. With Mrs. Palgrave's best reports to Mrs. Roget." Francis's father was Meyer Cohen a member of the London Stock Exchange whose year of birth in unknown but who died in 1831 helping date this letter. Boldly penned in Palgrave's usual small abysmal script. Overall a quite attractive example. unknown

Superb signature and inscription on the verso of his printed "John E. Owens" calling card heavy stock 3½" X 1 3/4". Near fine. Faintly age toned. Handsomely and boldly penned in his fine tight script the actor writes: "Aigburth Vale / Baltimore County / M-d. / Edward B Cook Esq / Better late / than never Yours truly / John E. / Owens. / June 30 '73." Aigburth Vale was Owens' famed country home designed by architects Niermsee and Neilson in 1868 and "Better Late Than Never" was one of Owens' popular comedies. On "Hotel Majestic" letterhead Orloff pens a friend in his large spindly script and broken English. In part: "I was very touched indeed with your telegramm to Wigwam Hall. I was very interested to hear about Judson-Wolfsohn amalgamation! I come with Alan -- who helps me very good in my tour in all country!" Arthur Judson 1881-1975 was an influential music manager and head of what became Columbia Artists Management famed for combining a number of independent managers such as the Wolfsohn Music Bureau into his "Judson Empire." Interestingly George Gershwin composed "An American in Paris" at this same hotel in this same year. unknown

Three-punched at left. 24 lines of working draft manuscript boldly penned complete with a few crossouts and additions in both ink and pencil. This appears as most of pages 215 and 216 in Orcutt's 1922 novel "The Balance: A Novel of Today" published in New York by Frederick A. Stokes Company. Johannsen authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject and enjoyed collecting working draft pages from authors. Titled "Eagles in the Sky / Messerschmitt ME 163B-1A Komet" this print depicts an August 16 1944 dogfight over Leipzig Germany in which a stray B-17 encounters a squadron of Messerschmitts. Opitz boldly signs the lower blank margin in pencil numbering it #11 of an edition of 500 copies. This item has been simply and tastefully matted in grey and framed in a slim metal frame overall dimensions 27" X 24". unknown

As an accompanying typed note "from the archives of WHO'S WHO notes Oldberg was one of only two Chicagoans who had appeared in every edition of this standard reference work since the publication of the first volume in 1896. After Leaving He Was Given Instruction In Art By His Uncle The California Artist J. Bond Francisco. While He Was In His Early 20S He Traveled To Paris With His Friend Stanton Macdonald Wright And Spent Several Years There Studying Art. Around The Time Of His Marriage In 1913 He Became Involved In The Nascent Film Industry In The Los Angeles Area And Was Involved In The Design And Construction Of Some Of The Earliest Studios There. He Continued In The Film Industry As An Art Director Until His Retirement In 1959. In The Mid-1930S He Spent Several Years In England Working For Alexander Korda Designing Studios For Him. After His Return To The United States He Spent The Remainder Of His Active Career Working For Rko. Thadée a dû vous dire souvent quelle amitié profonde j'ai pour vous. Peut-être ne vous l'ai-je pas exprimée telle que je la sens mais je la sens fortement et je voudrais bien que vous la sentiez aussi un peu. C'est un gros chagrin que de ne plus être aimé de ceux qu'on aime véritablement. But it was since the Dreyfus affair that his intimate and lasting friendship with the Natanson brothers Thadée Alexandre and Alfred was strengthened. After aesthetic disagreements about Art Nouveau and the Nabis Mirbeau finally reunited with Thadée around 1900 in a now common inclination for the young Nabis painters of the Revue Blanche Bonnard Vallotton and Vuillard. The Revue Blanche played an essential role in France as confirmed by historian Paul-Henri Bourrelier: ""Most of the most prominent writers painters musicians politicians and intellectuals of the late 19th and early 20th centuries collaborated with it or were associated with it. Created financed and directed by the three Natanson brothers young Polish Jews with the enthusiastic complicity of their classmates from the Condorcet lycée La Revue blanche quickly became a place of debate on all subjects that stirred France. Long postscript on the poor health of his wife the former actress Alice Régnault: ""Yesterday was not a good day and the wound on her arm presented a nasty appearance. Today it is a little better. But it is something to watch very closely. Movements are made a little more easily but she still suffers extremely at night at the slightest play of the muscles"".
