SIGNED First edition hardcover in green cloth with gilt design on front cover and the title in gilt on the spine. Binding has considerable spotting. There is bumping at headcap/spine. Headcap has some fraying.There is a pencilled notation on the front flyleaf by previous owner. An inscription has been written on the front flyleaf by the author "'The Times' with compliments of the writer". Some pencilled marks in text which is lightly toned with occasional small toned spots. Josiah Staunton Moore 1843-1913 was a Private in Company B of the 15th Virginia Regiment in the Civil War. He was captured at Five Forks on April 1 1865. On pale green letterhead Montgomery graciously informs an admirer "I have much pleasure in sending you the autograph you ask me for." Accomplished boldly in black ink in a fair hand as flowery as her fiction. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown

34794This Polish-born American theatrical photographer set up shop on Broadway in New York in the 1920s and in the '30s developed a compelling portraiture style that made him sought after on the East coast. PS heavy stock 5" X 7" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Undated ca. 1935 head and shoulders portrait of a dark-haired young women in typical Mitchell pose -- shoulders at left but facing rightward and head turned to the right. This subject has her hair parted in the middle and pulled tight; she gazes to her right viewer's left with the barest hint of a Mona Lisa smile. In the dark lower left corner Mitchell signs boldly in his usual white ink making for superb contrast. And in the light area at lower right the unidentified subject signs boldly in black grease pencil: "To Eddie / Tamara" also with superb contrast. While we haven't been able to identify the subject she is most likely an actress or perhaps a ballet figure. "Tamara" suggests Russian and Mitchell did photograph a number of Les Ballets Russes ballerinas. A lovely vintage piece signed by a premiere photographer. unknown
