38964This officer with the USAAF's 364th Bomb Squadron was flying his B-17 Flying Fortress over Nazi-controlled Europe when it was attacked and disabled whereupon he ordered his crew to parachute to safety while he managed to fly the craft with two crew too injured to parachute to a crash landing in friendly territory -- for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Heavy stock printed "Medal of Honor Recipient" card 6" X 4" with his printed full name and rank and the date of his heroic act "Over Europe / February 20 1944". Above his name Lawley signs large and bold in pencil. Fine. This attractive card is accompanied by a heavy stock 8½" X 13½" unsigned reproduction of aviation artist J.G. Instead of the usual image of Lang as Jesus looking beatific this striking oblong shot depicts a pensive Lang at a potter's wheel and is captioned in German "Oberammergau: Anton Lang in His Ceramic Workshop." Lang signs boldly in a light area at the lower left of the image area and in a somewhat darker area at the lower right adds "Christ / 1900-10-22. / 1926." Small signed photos of Lang are routine but large and unusual poses such as this are quite scarce. Superb and unusual. unknown

Not a First Day Cover but the enterprising collector used this stamp because it depicts newspapers being pulled off a colonial hand-pull press and this cancellation as relevant to the coincidental nature of twin sisters in identical professions. In part: "The President directs me to. thank you for the courtesy of the invitation conveyed therein to go to Lowell on June 6th upon the occasion of the visit there of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. He has however been obliged to decline the latter's invitation to attend the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the organization on June 4th.:" Boldly signed at the conclusion. On February 5th President Roosevelt unveiled legislation to enlarge the Supreme Court in order to insure support to push through his New Deal measures; the legislation failed. Lamneck gave this address critiquing FDR's measure a few days later. He signs at upper left on the first page bold and large in black ink. Really unusual. unknown

At the bottom of a typed autograph request "This is my fifth attempt so please" from future noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 "The Little Flower" signs. Accompanied by a delightful and fine glossy 6½" X 8½" black and white news agency photograph a half-length portrait of a seated La Guardia in suite and tie right hand cupped to mouth as he bellows. Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso dated 3 June 1947 captions this image "La Guardia Is Heard on Rents" and explains: "As the Senate backtracked yesterday and knocked out an amendment adopted last week directing monthly decontrol of 30 of the nation's rent areas Fiorello La Guardia began a personal campaign among members of Congress against what he termed the 'blackjacking' Senate bill. La Guardia head of the National Fair Rents Committee is shown with characteristic flourish stating at a Senate Office Building conference that he opposes particularly the Hawkes Amendment which would allow landlords and tenants to enter into leases extending to Dec. 31 1948 at not to exceed 15% more than the rent existing last Sept. 1. unknown
