Excellent content from the just-appointed vice consul on the eve of his departure to this noted businessman who appears to be a close friend. In part: ".am happy to find your Activity in business & the Success attending it; and I flatter myself that my Son when of age at which time shou'd suppose you wou'd wish to Retire from the active part will be able to manage it with as much propriety & Care as 'tis now done provided you & he can agree on Terms mutually beneficial." Of his own rising fortunes Bourne notes: "I am well paid for my post & once are much beyond my expectation the money is Sure tho to be paid by installments my future prospects are beyond calculation this in the Strictest Confidence hope my Son will in future Support his present principal good Character both at home & abroad. I am Solicited much for him at Boston I tell them nay no such thing they offer money Cloathing & c. I refuse all & determine he shall Serve out with you." And cryptically: "I have heard nothing about Mr. Johnson if he resigns your way will be to procure the most Reputable merchants & others in Baltimore to Recommend your Brother for the office to the President of the United States who with the Consent of Senate appoints all officers foreign & Domestic -- depend I shall do all I can." 16586This Unitarian minister about whom little is known was an intimate of Emerson having served as best man at his wedding and friend of Thoreau and the Transcendentalists and for a time in the 1840s lived at their famed utopian community Brook Farm; one scholar describes him as "teacher thinker and friend of literary men." AQS 1p 10½" X 6 3/4" n.p. 1872 June 9. Very good. Very mild age toning and a few light spots of foxing. Handsomely penned in brown signed and dated at the close this unattributed stanza reads in full: "If once we knew his fertile gift could lend / With worthy verses I this page might fill / But since alas! no muse will me befriend / Instead of deed kindly accept the will." "I have compared the signature on the Bradich portrait of Lincoln with other Bradish portrait signatures at the University and there is no doubt that these signatures are the same." 31634This conservative British politician was a Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force pilot during World War One then was elected to Parliament in 1922 serving until 1945; he also held posts at the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Aircraft Production and from 1939 to 1945 served as chairman of the British Film Institute; he was knighted in 1929 and raised to the peerage shortly before his death in 1945. ALS 2pp 4½" X 7¼" London England 1938 February 16. Addressed to Pauline Astor Spender Clay 1880-1972 widow of Herbert Henry Spender Clay 1875-1937 Member of Parliament and Privy Counsellor. Near fine. On letterhead bearing an oval "House of Commons" blind emboss Brass handsomely pens his condolences to the recently-widowed Mrs. Spender Clay. He remarks "I have known Bertie ever since I entered the 'House' in 1922 and have been a member of his group since its inception. His kindness and charm endeared him to all parties in the House. He will be sadly missed by his many friends whom he enchanted with his courtesy modesty and humour. The Country has lost a great gentleman whom it could ill afford to spare." Most attractive. unknown

ALS 2pp recto and verso 4" X 6¼" n.p. n.y. "Wednesday Morning". Very good. Ever-so-slightly age toned and lightly soiled. Addressed to his old friend William Jerdan 1782-1869 Scottish author and journalist long-time editor of "The Literary Gazette" 1817-51. Certainly writing to Jerdan during his "Literary Gazette" editorship Britton notes in part: "I inclose the first copy of a pamphlet for your acceptance hope you will have an opportunity to read parts of it before your next publication. It is the first prose productions of a young Gentleman who has shewn first rate talents in composition & therefore owe you will be pleased to know more of & I shall have much pleasure to introduce him to you. I am persuaded you will approve of the tone and sentiments of this pamphlet." One wonders what the "prose productions" were and who this "young Gentleman" may have been. Accompanied by an outstanding steel-engraved portrait of Britton 4¼" X 6½" London England 1820. Published by J. Asperne for the 1 April 1820 edition of the "European Magazine" this heavy stock portrait depicts Britton seated at a desk drawing architectural plans with a quill pen as he gazes at the viewer; two volumes of his "Cathedral Antiquities of England" may be seen on the table and rows of books and literary busts fill the background. A nice example of this uncommon autograph and a superb portrait. unknown

On fine stationery bearing an oval blind-embossed "House of Commons" seal on the first leaf Brodrick chats with an aristocratic lady about social matters. Reads in part: "We were so sorry to hear of Ld. Cowper's illness & trust he is really better. It must be such an anxiety." Bold and attractive. This came from the collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown

Likely in response to a musical invitation Brownlow declines replying in part: "My dear father died a few weeks ago & I am hoping this weekend to go away for a complete change & rest over Easter. I hope to be in Paris a little later in the year so perhaps there may be a chance then if things are seasonably quiet!" Boldly signed "William Brownlow / Lord Lurgan." Stanza from a poem handsomely penned in brown ink in old age: "There is no breath of common air / No ray of light from Star or Sun / No Shade of beauty anywhere; / But whispers of the Almighty One" nicely signed in full. Bryant does not identify it but this is the penultimate stanza from his poem "The Streams of Life" which appears on pages 227-28 of the "Life and Poems" volume published the year before he penned this excerpt. Accompanied by a superb 8½" X 6½" news agency photograph of 1947 showing Buck with bandleader Fred Waring and lyricist Deems Taylor at a Senate hearing protesting juke boxes -- itself a quite scarce and desirable image. unknown

Nice recap of his father's work reading in part: "There is just published an anthology of father's writings -- 'John Burroughs America' -- Devin-Adair Co -- I could recommend 'Riverby' 'Far & Near' or 'Camping & Tramping with Roosevelt.' Dr Clara Barrus wrote 'Whitman & Burroughs' -- also in her 'Life & Letters of John Burroughs' there is much about their friendship." Address portion also penned in Burroughs' hand. 42106This American poet published his first collection "An Ode to Harvard and Other Poems" in 1907 acting as editor at "McClure's Magazine" briefly and taking part in the famed Spectra literary hoax in 1916; in 1922 he relocated to Santa Fe and became a mainstay of the rich literary scene there publishing poetry collections until 1960. Inoffensive mounting traces on verso cause tiny ¼" paper loss at upper right; several small paper losses along original vertical center fold not affecting text. On pale grey pictorial letterhead of Hotel St. Francis in San Francisco the poet pens a brief cryptic but cordial note in thick black ink: "A long while after and in a rattling hurry -- but with appreciative thanks and good wishes!" and signs nicely beneath. Obviously I will be very happy if someone plays my cantata for chorus because it is an important work and I would love very much to hear it." Having died at age twenty-six Cartan's autograph is quite scarce and good music content letters rare. Comes with a TLS in French from what may have been Cartan's agent dated 21 April 1932 just after Cartan's death presenting this Cartan letter to music critic Irving Schwerke 1893-1975. unknown

Age toning from long-ago newspaper clipping to large upper right area. On pictorial Salvation Army letterhead the Baronet boldly pens that he has never met a mannamed "Hal Marten" that Marten is seeking and suggests "You might write to the Cattle Raisers Association. it is very hard to trace a man in the West." Comes with newspaper clipping "Girl Won Titled Cowboy Over to Salvation Army" darkened but not brittle. Most unusual and uncommon. unknown

"We are all about as usual including the littlest now nearly a year old -- David Van Wormer Clough." And notes travels: "I was. in the Black Hills country last summer for branch school and took a short trip to Star Valley Western Wyoming. The obverse is a feeble attempt to catch a bit of the 'Wyoming Alps' or the Tetons." Nicely penned in brown ink. The verso is a fine print titled "The Tetons" a tiny woodblock image of grand mountains captioned "Christmas Greetings / Mr. and Mrs. Wilson O. Clough."
