195283726Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat 1952. Fine. Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat août 1952 20.80 x 34 cm 52 pages Autograph manuscript by Jean Cocteau early version of the poetry collection Appogiatures - published in 1953 by Éditions du Rocher in Monaco - comprising 47 leaves of thick paper taken from a large drawing pad and 5 smaller leaves of thin paper written in blue ink and blue ballpoint pen. Numerous deletions and corrections. The leaves are numbered up to 25 including one number 8 bis and most bear a small cross or the mythical Cocteau star. The last leaf containing the poem titled ""Lettre"" is dated in the poet's hand August 15 1952. Also in Cocteau's hand the first leaf bears the final title above which is crossed out the initially envisaged title - Soucoupes volantes - the date 1952 and the place - St Jean Cap Ferrat; it also features a crossed-out dedication: ""À la mémoire de Baudelaire et de Max Jacob qui nous apprirent ces exercices de style."" While the collection clearly shows the influence of Baudelaire's Petits Poèmes en prose and Max Jacob's Le Cornet à dés this tribute was not retained in the published version and was replaced by a dedication to the publisher Henri Parisot. An exceptional ensemble containing 33 of the 51 published poems 11 texts rejected on the advice of publisher Henri Parisot and published in ""En marge d'Appogiatures"" uvres poétiques complètes de la Pléiade pp. 818-831 and 6 unpublished texts. David Gullentops in the edition of Jean Cocteau's uvres poétiques complètes in the Pléiade notes the existence of a second set of manuscripts and typescripts preserved at the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris BHVP. He further indicates that he had access to no manuscript of the poem ""Lanterne sourde."" Yet this poem is indeed part of our ensemble which would thus be the first version of the collection envisioned by Cocteau. Jean Cocteau began writing this collection of poems in verse and prose commissioned by his friend the publisher Henri Parisot at the end of July 1952 while staying at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in Francine Weisweiller's Villa Santo-Sospir. The first version of the collection was completed in mid-August as attested by the two dates on our manuscript ""août 1952"" and ""15 août 1952"" and this entry in Cocteau's diary: ""J'ai terminé la mise au point des courts poèmes en prose pour Parisot. Our ensemble would thus be a mixture of the first poems sent to Henri Parisot written with a pen and several added texts written with a ballpoint pen. This hypothesis is supported by the writing of the final title Appogiatures on the title page of our manuscript; Cocteau relates this change again in his diary dated August 29 1952: ""Ai . classé les poèmes pour Parisot sous le titre : Appogiatures."" Our early manuscript version contains significant variants concerning the titles of the poems; thus the poem ""Livre de bord"" was initially titled ""Le Spectacle"" likewise for ""Au poil"" for which Cocteau had previously chosen ""La langue française"" or ""Le tableau noir"" originally titled ""Le lièvre et la tortue."" The order of the poems was also considerably modified for printing: our ensemble shows that Cocteau wished to begin the collection with ""Le voyageur"" which would finally be replaced by ""Seul"" and moved to second position. Also noteworthy in our dossier is the presence of eight poems entirely in verse: these would be removed Appogiatures becoming a collection exclusively in prose. The ensemble heavily deleted and corrected also presents long passages suppressed in the published version for example this very beautiful extract from the poem ""Scène de ménage"" evoking the ""countess"" Francine Weisweiller: ""Et les larmes de la comtesse se disaient : nous sommes la mer. Et la mer se unknown
17890TP107Paris 1789. Four very warm letters from patients obviously post-operative all declaring the utmost respect and thanks to Professor Chopart. One letter is clearly signed Lalouette and the first of March 1789. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS 1792-1872. Born in 1792 Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world" he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100000 books and at least 60000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Visiting scholars driven to distraction would spend days hunting for an elusive text in the dusty heaps that filled every room. Because Sir Thomas has a morbid dread of fire most of his collection was housed in coffinlike boxes that could be carted away quickly. Visitors to Middle Hill were struck too by the presence of numerous logs a ploy he used to lure beetles away from his books. As Sir Thomas relentlessly pursued his passion the house itself began to crumble and its floors started to sag under the cast weight of hundreds of tons of paper. His neglect of Middle Hill was partly deliberate however. Sir Thomas's chief enemy in life James Halliwell had married his daughter against his wishes. It appears that Halliwell was in Sir Thomas' eyes the worst kind of criminal a book thief who had stolen valuable works from university libraries and even from his father-in-law. Having no sons Sir Thomas was unable to prevent Halliwell from inheriting his estate. To ensure that his detested heir would never receive anything of value Sir Thomas's solution was to allow Middle Hill to fall unto complete disrepair. He even went so far as to chop down and sell for lumber the centuries-old oak trees that lined the majestic mile-long drive to his home. In 1863 Sir Thomas decided to move - in order to accommodate his books. With the aid of 160 men 103 wagonloads of books and papers drawn by 230 horses the books were lumbered from Middle Hill top their new estate in nearby Cheltenham. It is said that for years afterwards the countryside was littered with the remains of carts that had collapsed under the sheer weight of the Phillipps collection. Sir Thomas continues to add to his library until his death in 1872. After Sir Thomas's death his immediate family had no room for his collection. So vast was the library that although individual items and large sections were sold privately or through numerous auction sales the Phillipps collection is still being sold more than a century after the death of its owner. In the course of its sales many treasures have come to light. As late as 1964 part of the long-lost and unique medieval manuscript of the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses appeared and was subsequently reunited with its other half at Magdalen College Oxford. Once destined for destruction as worthless wastepaper this and many other priceless works were saved by the single-minded obsession of the greatest bibliomaniac of all time. Autograph. Manuscript. 27899Popular and prolific American playwright. Nice archive of five TLsS each 1p three 8½" X 11" and two 8½" X 7" Shoreham NY 1942 June 3 to December 11. Addressed to poet Joseph Auslander 1897-1965 at the Library of Congress. Very good to fine. All concern the donation of Pollock's manuscripts to the Library of Congress although he protests "I don't want to crowd you with Pollockiana.". ".nothing would give me greater pleasure" writes Pollock "and particularly because. the inspiration for my most successful play 'THE FOOL' came of an afternoon's reading in that Library." Regarding the manuscript of his just-completed autobiography "Harvest of My Years" Pollock sheds some light on his work methods: ".all but the first two chapters of this are written in pencil. The first two were dictated and typed and if you desire with the combination I will include a note of explanation. The pencilled manuscript is voluminous of course and should you prefer I could substitute a typed script with pen and ink corrections in my handwriting but I think you will agree that if it can be preserved the original pencilled script is more interesting." A fine little archive with much biographical and bibliographical interest. unknown

31612Early resident of this important Illinois lead-mining town which for a time produced a high percentage of the world's lead "Galena" is Latin for lead and was supposed to become the great hub of the Midwest before Chicago's natural geographic advantage supplanted it; today's Galena is remembered as the adopted hometown of Ulysses S. Grant. ALS 2pp single leaf 5" X 8" Galena IL 1857 January 1. Addressed to Miss Marcia Floyd of Courville Maine. Writing on pale pink lined stationery McDaniel pens her friend this chatty missive. She describes Illinois: "Well it is a large and fertile state abounding in vast prairies the principle production is wheat maize etc. There are numerous salt springs." Of Galena she notes: "The inhabitants in the vicinity are chiefly farmers and are intelligent and enterprising. Most of them live in log houses. I am attending school at present and like it here very much." Oddly she signs off "Peter Fling / Mary McDaniel." The significance of this pseudonym we have not been able to ascertain -- perhaps "Peter Fling" was a character in popular young women's literature of the day. Even more odd is the original envelope which is present. A typical small 4 3/4" X 2½" in addition to addressing it McDaniel draws a three-cent stamp in the upper right corner and draws a circular "Galena Ill Jan. 1" postal cancellation in the upper left corner! The 1850s was the early days of actual government-issue postage stamps of course but this humorous version surely was contained within another larger second envelope. No "McDaniels" appear in the Galena city directories of this period though with a large and somewhat transient population in a rural area this isn't terribly meaningful. This superb and evocative letter has been handsomely framed the letter in one mat opening and the envelope in another above it double matted in tan and dark brown and framed in a 1¼" burlwood frame overall dimensions 10¼" X 18". It's double sided as well so may be flipped over to read the letter's second page where an attractive typescript of the entire letter is also displayed in a mat opening. Very early and very unusual. unknown
39139This pioneering American physician considered the father of neurology was also a psychiatrist and bestselling writer and poet. Secretarial ALS 2pp lettersheet 5" X 8" Philadelphia PA 1898 August 11. Addressed to Edward Peterson. Near fine. On his "S. Weir Mitchell M.D." letterhead Mitchell's secretary pens a letter on his behalf. In part: "Dr Mitchell has forwarded me some letters for reply as he is always out of the City at this time of the year. He strongly advises you to choose the University of Pennsylvania from which to get your degree. He is one of the Trustees of that institution. During the Civil War he was on duty at the Christian St Hospital." Appears to be signed "MBC. / sec'y." With original envelope. An interesting curiosity. unknown
35258Montana resident possibly an attorney. ALS 2pp separate leaves 8½" X 11" Harlem MT 1904 July 21. Addressed to "My dear James & Albert" Smith's brothers. Near fine. Handsomely penned in black ink in a large readable hand this letter largely concerns the claims on "poor Writ's property" for "some of his old time prospect loving friend got around me and did not want Writs mining claims sold that he had held onto for 20 years as they would go for little or nothing. So I paid out on them $500.00 & told the administrator not to sell them. They have to be represented again within a few months it will take between $300 & $400.00 dollars Will you help me represent them If you cannot or do not want to will you let me have your interests On account of your being in Canada & so far away If you will let me have your interests I will send you $25.00 apiece. Should I ever be luckly sic to get any thing out of them I will send you something more." Goes on to explain "the claims are so high up in the mountains and the snow comes there so early the claims must be represented early or else they will be lost. The claims that Writ had in Thunder Mountain have gone by default they were so far away I could do nothing about them." Of some town named Bellevue in Montana he notes "Bellevue is a gone down place very dull there." Invites his brothers to visit: "I'd like to have you both come out and see this country some time do not put it off too long it would be a fine trip for you." Interesting mine settlement content. unknown
