38964This officer with the USAAF's 364th Bomb Squadron was flying his B-17 Flying Fortress over Nazi-controlled Europe when it was attacked and disabled whereupon he ordered his crew to parachute to safety while he managed to fly the craft with two crew too injured to parachute to a crash landing in friendly territory -- for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Heavy stock printed "Medal of Honor Recipient" card 6" X 4" with his printed full name and rank and the date of his heroic act "Over Europe / February 20 1944". Above his name Lawley signs large and bold in pencil. Fine. This attractive card is accompanied by a heavy stock 8½" X 13½" unsigned reproduction of aviation artist J.G. The original mimeographed caption sheet printed on cheap acidic newsprint thus often absent is present and in very good condition. Captioned "U.N. Secretary-General Call on Secretary Marshall" the text reads in part: "Trygve Lie right Secretary-General of the United Nations today paid a formal courtesy call on Secretary of State George C. 31732This Irish soldier of fortune fought under General Gomez in Cuba in 1897 in the Spanish-American War as one of Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" in a Canadian cavalry regiment in the South African War in the Balkans in 1903 with the Princess Pat regiment in 1914 with the United States Army in 1917 and elsewhere; he called himself an "apostle of discontent" complaining it was hard to feed himself between wars; he tried his hand at acting in later years and even became a race horse trainer; at his death he owned a filling station in Taos New Mexico. Superb signature and inscription on the verso of his printed "John E. Owens" calling card heavy stock 3½" X 1 3/4". Near fine. Faintly age toned. Handsomely and boldly penned in his fine tight script the actor writes: "Aigburth Vale / Baltimore County / M-d. / Edward B Cook Esq / Better late / than never Yours truly / John E. / Owens. / June 30 '73." Aigburth Vale was Owens' famed country home designed by architects Niermsee and Neilson in 1868 and "Better Late Than Never" was one of Owens' popular comedies. Bold strong signature typical "C. Schurz" 2½" X 1¼" slip n.p. Very good. Mild age toning with paper clip rust mark at upper left touching upon the "C." An appealing war-date example of this extraordinary figure's signature with "Maj Genl." penned beneath it and another rather illegible line bpenned beneath that may read "Dec. 23d 1863". Schurz was raised to the rank of major general in March 1863 which would make this possible 1863 date logical. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved group portrait entitled "Defenders of the Union" along the bottom heavy stock 6" X 9" n.p. n.y. Twelve superb individual portraits each within its own oval decorative frame with Rosecrans at upper center and Sigel Weitzel Meagher and other Union generals surrounding him -- Schurz at upper right.
