Colour print, 138 x 90 mm. "Dhow Builders" in "Dubai, Trucial States". - Well preserved commercial image of Dubai shortly before the oil era and its development into what is today the largest city in the United Arab Emirates.
2 topographic maps, colour-printed. Scale 1:500,000. 820 x 640 mm and 770 x 648 mm. Compiled from 1930s surveys and produced by the British 512 (Army Field Survey) Company, Royal Engineers, for use in the Persian war theatre, these consecutive maps cover the south-western area of Iraq, including Rutba and Fallujah, with parts of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria (approximately the area between 31° and 33°30' N and 39° and 44° E). - Previously folded. Marked "Iraq Desert Sheet 1" and "Sheet 2". Generally well preserved.
205:253 mm and 180:130 mm. One picture shows Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (1919-1980) with Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa I, ruler of Bahrain from 1942 until his death in 1961; the other is a portrait of the latter.
Oblong 8vo. Captioned in English, French and Arabic. Rare, early black and white photographic views of two important petroleum refineries in Africa: Suez and Fedala. The latter is featured in a photograph by the French military photographer Marcel Flandrin (1889-1957), a pioneer of aerial photography in Morocco. Taken from an aeroplane and published by the Syndicat d'Inititative, the image shows the bonding warehouses at Fedala refinery amidst a rough Atlantic. - The second postcard, published by Vitta & Cie., shows a general view of the Suez refinery against the backdrop of the Ataka Mountains. - In addition to the printed captions, the postcard of Suez bears handwritten captions in German and English on recto and verso in ink and pencil. - The postcard of Suez pierced in two places. A very well preserved set.

The photographs show a group of British oil workers being evacuated from Abadan on their way to the British cruiser "Mauritius", as well as several tankers docked at the Abadan Refinery. - The photo of the tankers with mounted caption in English on verso.

Interesting samples of the Aramco expats' buoyant cultural life in Ras Tanura: programmes for performances by the Ras Tanura Fellowship Choir and the theatre group Ras Tanura Players. The former performed "The Seven Last Words of Christ", composed by Theodore Dubois in 1867, under the direction of Lyle R. Danielson. The programme lists all members of the chorus as well as the organist. - The Ras Tanura Players presented the 1944 play "Guest in the House" by Hagar Wilde and Dale Eunson, directed by Don Ertel. Also in 1944, the play was turned into a popular film noir starring Anne Baxter and Ralph Bellamy. The programme features an ink sketch showing Evelyn Heath approaching the Proctor house. - The theatre programme with small marginal flaws.
325 x 235 mm; 220 x 145 mm. Pack of matches with 18 matches. Ticket holders for a United Arab Airlines flight (probably to Japan) and a pack of matches promoting the Comet 4c Jet. The bigger holder is illustrated with a lithograph showing Geishas. - The de Havilland DH.106 Comet was the world's first commercial jet airliner. The last Comet variant, the Comet 4C, first flew on 31 October 1959. Ordered by Kuwait Airways, Middle East Airlines, Misrair (later United Arab Airlines), and Sudan Airways, it was the most popular Comet variant and made its final flight in 1997.

Three letters to the Prelate in Austro-Hungary, Jacob Mislin (1807-78), signed, containing reports of the position of the Lebanese Christians, especially about Youssef Bey Karam (1823-89), a Maronite freedom fighter in Mount Lebanon: "Le Cheik Joseph Caram, sur l'avis qu'il avait reçu de votre Grandeur s'était préparé à faire une brillante réception à leur Altesse Royale le Duc de Brabant et son auguste épouse, il avait mis à contribution tout ce que son pays pouvait lui fournir de ressources matérielles, pour donner à leur Altesse un témoignage éclatant de la vénération qui lui et tout son pays professent pour elles. Après de nombreux préparatifs, ayant appris que leur Altesse n'avait pu exécuter leur voyage au cèdres, sa douleur a été à son comble. Vous connaissez ses instincts pour les devoirs de l'hospitalité; En cette occasion ils s'étaient déployés au delà de tout ce qu'on peut dire. Pendant les dix ou douze jours de son attente, il avait mis plusieurs villages à contributions, pour réparer les chemins trop raboteux et qui pouvaient offrir quelques dangers, il avait aussi envoyé au haut des montagnes ôter la neige tout le long de la route depuis les cèdes jusqu'à l'autre côté du Liban; il avait entretenu pendant plusieurs jours une cinquantaine de cavaliers dans sa maison; il avait acheté et distribué huit quintaux de poudre à tous ses gens armés aux quels il donnait quelque teinture de la manœuvre militaire pour que leurs salves fussent exécutées avec ordre; il avait fait de grands achat de tentures pour tapisser tout l'intérieur de sa maison et ses avenues &c.&c.&c., le tout à ses frais, malgré la maudicité de ses ressources. Son cœur généreux et on ne peut plus désintéressé serait certes loin d'espérer quelque compensation à toutes ces dépenses, il se tiendrait même grièvement offensé sur le point d'honneur, s'il savait que je vous au fait connaître ces détails; c'est donc à son inçu et sur le conseil de quelques uns de ses nombreux amis que je me donne la liberté de vous en entretenir, afin que si vous le jugez convenable, vous portiez ces faits à la connaissance de leur Altesse Royale; votre ami se croirait déjà trop flatté de savoir que sa bonne volonté leur est connue. Le Prince de Jouinville dans son voyage en Syrie l'avait pris tellement en affection qu'il voulait l'emmener à la cour, si l'Auguste sœur de ce digne Prince voulait lui continuer le même intérêt, nous la prierions de vouloir bien obtenir de la porte Ottomane, pour le Cheik Joseph Caram, le titre serait le prix de son parfait dévouement, non seulement pour le servir de leur Altesse Royale, mais encore pour celui de tous les européens qui voyagent dans ces pays et cela depuis un bon nombre d'années, suivant en cela les traces de son illustre Père. Mille pardons, Monseigneur, de la liberté que je prends moi pauvre missionnaire; c'est peut-être un excès de tendresse de ma part" (10 May 1855). - "Le scheik Joseph Caram gouverneur d'Eden, Sgorta, […] vient de scavoir l'honorable et précieux souvenir de son Altesse Royale le Duc de Brabant. Cette marque distinguée de la munificence du Prince a été reçue avec de grands transports d'enthousiasme et une pompe vraiment triomphale. On est allé à rencontre de la précieuse epingle, avec le même élan et la même solemnité que si c'eut été son Altesse en personne qui venait honorer ces contrées de sa personne. Le Scheik Joseph ne fait rien à moitié: il a voulu que la foule nombreuse qui faisait cortège au Cadeau Royal, depuis Tripoli, avec chants, musique, salves, tournois, comprit la signification qu'il voulait donner à cette fête. […] publiant avec une grande conviction, en face de tous, que tout honneur vient de Dieu et doit retourner à Dieu, que ce n'est qu'en vue de glorifier sa souveraine Majesté qu'on doit accepter la gloire mondaine; que le glorieux Prince qui veut bien condescendre à honorer la personne n'a d'autre dessein dans ses largesses que d'étendre le royaume de celui de la libéralité du quel il tient le sceptre et la couronne […]" (1 Feb. 1856). - "Le fanatisme des Musulmans se réveille. Un de ces jours le tribunal de Tripoli a condamné à (3) mort un Maronite pour avoir maudit Jésus Christ. Ce n'est pas, comme vous le pensez bien, par respect pour la religion chrétienne et son divin instituteur, mais pour avoir raison de condamner à la même peine de mort quiconque blasphémerait le nom de Mahomet : car disent-ils la loi du Coran est encore dans toute sa vigueur et le Hati-Scherif n'a pas voulu toucher la question de la liberté de conscience […]" (21 June 1856).

Mais il ses trouvé de bon chevaux engager dans les deux premières réunions et ayant lessé un garçon avec la jument, je m'atander qu'il aurais fait ce que je lui avais dit, de la promener matin et soir en main; comme il n'étais pas assez fort pour la tenir, je lui ais enlevez la selle afin qu'il ne la monte pas pour ne pas quelle s'emballe. Si il avez fait ce que je lui avais dit, elle aurais été prete à courir comme elle été assez prete lorsque je lais monté. Il ny avais qu'à la maintenir par des promenades. Faites en ce que vous voudrais. Elle s'atellera bien j'en suis sur. Faites en votre jument de service et lorsque je viendrai je vous aporterai selle et bride pour la monter et la tenir. Si je vais à Pau cet hivert, on la fera saillir par Lord-Sting pour faire un demi sang. A small collection of letters by the Aramco employee Paul Schwarzenau, who joined the Dhahran Camp in 1952. - 3 letters to his mother describe his life in the Middle East. About an invasion of locusts: "The past 10 days here witnessed a mild invasion of locusts or what we commonly call grasshoppers. A year ago, shortly before i arrived here, they swarmed into this area as uninvited and unwelcome visitors and didn't leave until they had eaten or destroyed practically every piece of green vegetation. They certainly can pick out the color green with their acute vision and i barely reached home to hide my dollar bills from their search-for-green! [...]" (3 May 1953). - About Ramadan: "Three days ago the arab month of Ramadhan began [...] It's quite a hardship on the arabs who work daytime shift since they aren't heavyweights to begin with and after a few hours without nourishment they are in no shape for work-exertion. The company should abolish all daytime work during this month but of course it is all a big question of $$$$$$'s and the oil has to be kept moving regardless of any attempts, man-made or god-made, to interrupt the flow. Soooooo the old routine keeps spinning at a slower pace but in the same system [...]" (16 May 1953). - Enjoying living alone: "The young man who was rooming with me left for home yesterday after finishing his two-year contract. Not many new employees have been hired in recent months so that means that i'll be enjoying complete ownership of the room for some time to come. How lucky can i get? All this and a salary too! Ah yes, this is real living although I still can't understand why it should happen to a bum like me! [...]" (no place or date). - To Ruth, about the language barrier: "Yesterday spent some time with a man who had gone to Mt Hermon graduated in '34 - Edwin Thompson. He is in Training Dept & speaks arabic - took us more into Arab world - not too many Americans get over various hurdles - language being one important one. Most of Saudis get a little English" (no place or date). - The typed letters show cuts in several places.

She has not had the care she needs, but looks well altogether and is happy, though I am not [...]" (letter of 28 September). - "Thank you for your kind letter; I hope that you and your dear wife will do me the honour of dining with me on Saturday at 1 PM [...]" (letter of 6 October). - On stationery with printed address.
