194520050501London: Faber & Faber 1945. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. First printing duodecimo size 206 pp. in original dust jacket in a custom chemise and slipcase. Charles Walter Stansby Williams 1886-1945 a companion of Lewis and Tolkien and a lecturer at Oxford was a prolific writer perhaps best remembered today for his fantasy novels which usually have strong Christian elements. T.S. Eliot wrote of William's novels: "they are 'supernatural thrillers' because they explore the sacramental intersection of the physical with the spiritual while also examining the ways in which power even spiritual power can corrupt as well as sanctify" n.b. quote from Wiki.

Williams first met C.S. Lewis when each having read one of the others' books each sent a note to the other which crossed in the mail; the two became life-long friends with Lewis becoming one of Williams' most ardent admirers. Many believe that Lewis had Williams in mind as an inspiration for "That Hideous Strength" published the same year as this work 1945 the third of the three novels comprising Lewis' "Space Trilogy".

"All Hallow's Eve" the last of Williams' novels to be published during his lifetime can be considered an allegory in that "a primary purpose of the book is to illustrate Williams's particular mystical brand of Christianity." Many Christian themes are explored including redemption substitution and the release of the soul into the afterlife. However it can also be enjoyed at a level not dependent upon those allegorical themes for "in it one finds the ambiguity of realistic fiction the development of complex characterization.and a setting which is comtemporary and realistic. We are in London with real people facing real problems. Although the reader is led to look for secondary meaning in the presence of a dead protagonist it can certainly be argued that the effectiveness of the novel does not depend on our believing or even understanding Williams's doctrines" Leeming and Drowne "Encyclopedia of Allegorial Literature" p. 13.

___DESCRIPTION: Full red cloth over thin boards with gilt lettering on the spine; duodecimo size 7.5" by 5" pagination: 1-4 5-206 note that the final two signatures are unopened. Rosters. Appendix--A Listing of MOS/SSNS. In 1942 the 380th Bombardment Group was established. It operated primarily in the Southwest Pacific Theater as a Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bomber unit assigned to Fifth Air Force. The history of the 380th dates back to 28 October 1942 when the unit was established. Originally the 380th Group consisted of four squadrons the 528th 529th 530th and 531st Bombardment Squadrons. The 380th was part of Fifth Air Force and was known as the Flying Circus and as the King of the Heavies. The 380th went overseas in April 1943 to become the second Consolidated B-24 Liberator unit in the Fifth Air Force at that time. The group arrived at Fenton Airfield Australia. The Command's purpose was to engage in destroying Japanese strongholds in the Pacific. The group later was placed under the Australian Northwest Area Command operating out of Darwin Northern Territory. It was the only B-24 Liberator unit attached to the RAAF. The group was assigned to train RAAF personnel on the B-24 and to secure Australia's safety against a threatened Japanese invasion along its northern coast. Upon arrival in Australia the group immediately began combat operations. It was the only heavy bomber unit available to cover the whole of the Dutch East Indies 1000000 square miles from July 1943 until late in 1944. During April and May 1944 the 380th engaged in the most intensive and sustained operations since arrival in the southwest Pacific neutralizing the rear bases through which the Japanese might reinforce their air force in the Wakde-Hollandia area of the Netherlands East Indies. From the end of May 1944 until it moved to Murtha Field San Jose Mindoro Philippines in February 1945 the 380th concentrated on neutralizing enemy bases installations and industrial compounds in the southern and central East Indies. The Group flew the first heavy bomber strikes against targets in China and French Indochina. In June 1945 the 380th was placed under the operational control of the 13th Air Force for pre-invasion attacks against Labuan and on the oil refineries at Balikpapan in Borneo. For nearly two weeks the Group's Liberators kept these targets under a state of aerial siege. The 380th flew its last combat missions to Taiwan. The 380th then moved to Okinawa and flew reconnaissance patrols over the Japanese islands. The group ferried released prisoners of war to Manila. On 18 October 1945 the unit was transferred to Seventh Air Force in the Philippines where it moved to Clark Field on Luzon and participated in the Sunset Project the return of B-24s and their crews to the United States. Although some aircraft and crews were flown back to the United States most of the aircraft from inactivating units were simply scrapped at Clark and personnel were returned via Navy ships from Manila. In its service with the Australians the 380th served longer under the operational control of an Allied country than any other Air Force unit from June 1943 until February 1945. The 380th Group was inactivated on 20 February 1946. The 380th was assigned to the South West Pacific War Area because of the long-range capabilities of the Liberator and the need for its services there at that point in the war Spring 1943. A total of 137 planes served in Australia and New Guinea. Of these 53 served further in The Philippines. The 380th made the longest bombing missions of WWII to the oil refineries at Balikpapan Borneo 200 miles further than the Ploesti mission in Europe and to those at Surabaja Java. Both of these missions were accomplished several times during their stay in Australia. In addition to attacks on the Japanese oil supply the 380th was heavily engaged in crippling their shipping fleet to reduce the Japanese capability of supplying their far-flung forces. Numerous Japanese airfields were also heavily bombed in the East Indies to reduce the Japanese threat to Australia and New Guinea forces. As part of its duties in Australia the 380th carried out the operational training of 52 Australian crews and their associated ground staffs so that the Australians could take over the East Indian campaign activities of the 380th when they were assigned to The Philippines in February 1945. The limitation states that the first 60 copies were signed. In his autobiography Williams remarks: "I was in my stride now. I thought I had found my form. I said what I had to say using the American idiom; I felt free with it. The rhythmical construction of a poem was determined for me by the language as it is spoken. Word of mouth language not classical English. That feeling of the language was the fountainhead of what I wanted to do. If I could make that distinguished I would have accomplished my purpose. Whatever distinction I succeeded in getting is witnessed by the poems included in The Clouds" p. 74ff. Octavo. 1932190765London: Victor Gollancz Ltd 1932. First edition inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "Charles Williams 28 April 1932 thanking you for buying it". This title is scarce inscribed tracing none in commerce and none in auction records. This is William's major occult-themed work concerning the possessive powers of a Tarot card deck. In 1939 Williams moved to Oxford where he became a lecturer and a publisher and fell in with the Inklings who met at the Eagle and Child pub. Much like C. S. Lewis his work often combines fantasy genre elements with Christian themes. T. S. Eliot wrote "Williams understanding of Evil was profound. He is concerned not with the Evil of conventional morality and the ordinary manifestations by which we recognize it but with the essence of evil." Octavo. Original black cloth spine lettered in green. Spine lightly sunned sides a little rubbed faint foxing to edges and outer leaves: a very good copy. T. S. Blank verso with extraction remnants. Good plus.

"Originally from Philadelphia and later New York City Edward Clay remains an enigmatic figure. He created highly provocative racial social and political satire until late in his life. His 1829 engraving The Nation's Bulwark a Well-Disciplined Militia LC shows a lineup of bored undisciplined soldiers smoking pipes chatting barely awake confronted by a plump officer with a bottle bulging from his pocket. The slogans on the tent banners in the background 'Hurrah for Old Hickory' and 'Jackson Forever' indicate the unit's loyalty to Jacksonian principles of democracy" Recent Acquisition: Fantastical Militias at the Clements Library web site 27 October 2014.
Excellent description from the Fleischer's Auction House April 2026 lot 37: "A satirical depiction of a Philadelphia militia company by the American cartoonist Edward Williams Clay 1799 - 1857. The scene portrays a motley assemblage of militiamen gathered under the command of an officer dressed in a frock coat with epaulettes and a plumed hat. In contrast to their commander's martial bearing most of the men appear in civilian clothing and stand at varying and often comically imperfect degrees of attention. Their mismatched attire and relaxed posture lend the group a distinctly humorous quality suggesting a volunteer militia whose enthusiasm exceeds its discipline.
"This print was intended as the first number in Clay's proposed series Sketches of Character in which he caricatured recognizable types and personalities from contemporary Philadelphia society. Although conceived as a continuing series this appears to have been the only number issued. The figures represented are believed to be caricatures of well-known Philadelphians of the period rendered with Clay's characteristic wit and observational sharpness.
"Clay was among the earliest American artists to produce sustained series of political and social caricatures in lithographic form helping to establish a distinctly American tradition of satirical printmaking in the decades before the Civil War. Prints such as the present example not only lampooned local personalities and civic institutions but also reflected the vibrant political culture of the early republic when militia companies public gatherings and partisan politics formed a visible part of urban life.
"As both a humorous social commentary and an early example of American political caricature the print offers a vivid glimpse into the intersection of militia culture local identity and Jacksonian politics in nineteenth-century Philadelphia."
Weitenkamp 215. This text served to guide the transition of the Navy into a peacetime force after the War of 1812 laying out detailed instructions for various ranks and positions from yard personnel and warrant officers to high-ranking officials. It covers a wide array of topics including ship maintenance naval ceremonies discipline and provisions as well as specific instructions for surgeons pursers marines and midshipmen. The regulations also provided for the handling of convoys and established clear guidelines for salutes military honors and other ceremonies. This text played a crucial role in shaping the growth structure and discipline of the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century especially during the presidencies of James Monroe John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.

This particular copy belonged to the famous USS Peacock a sloop-of-war that played a significant role in the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century! Commissioned during the War of 1812 it was part of various naval operations including suppressing piracy in the Caribbean and patrolling South American waters during regional independence movements. After decommissioning in 1827 it was rebuilt for exploration and participated in the United States Exploring Expedition in 1838 eventually meeting its end on the Columbia Bar in 1841. The ship also took part in diplomatic missions such as conveying Francis Baylies to Argentina and engaging in treaty negotiations in Asia. Throughout its service the Peacock navigated various challenges including severe weather conditions and health crises among the crew. The fascinating post-war exploits of the USS Peacock's diplomatic and explorational missions are recorded in American diplomat Edmund Robert's notes that were published in 1837 under the title "Embassy to the Eastern Courts of Cochin-China Siam and Muscat in the U.S. Sloop-of-war Peacock".

Item number: #41562

Price: $2500

CROWNINSHIELD Benjamin Williams; BOARD OF NAVY COMMSIONERS OF THE UNITED STATES

Rules Regulations and Instructions for the Naval Service of the United States: Prepared by the Board of Navy Commissioners of the United States with the Consent of the Honorable the Secretary of the Navy; In Obedience to an Act of Congress Passed Seventh February 1815 Entitled "An Act to Alter and Amend the Several Acts for Establishing a Navy Department by Adding Thereto a Board of Commissioners."

Washington: E.
