192460304Paris: Ernst Henri 1924. Folio. 2 unnumbered leaves of text. With 40 mounted hand-coloured plates beautifully reproducing the original designs Rococco chinoiserie designs 3 plates w/ old reinforced mounts at upper corners a few w/ old offsetting from the original glue. Preserved in the original quarter-chinoiserie cloth over boards printed illustrated label on front cover front tie loosened from the fore-edge edgewear rubbing still a nice complete set of these plates. First edition thus of this exceptional portfolio reproducing the exquisite and fanciful botanical settings landscapes and allegorical Chinese figures from this extraordinary artist. His chinoiserie engravings exaggerated the wispy and delicate qualities of the style portraying the world as a fairyland fileed with colour and fantasy. His 18th-Century Rococo designs were wildly popular by decorative arts manufacturers and applied to silk textiles porcelain pottery wallpapers and even silver. Pillement 1719-1808 had developed by 1764 a new method of printing on silk with fast colours and that also encouraged the durability and legacy of his designs. The majority of these were engraved by the noted woman artist & engraver Anne Allen a British artist who not only was the second wife to Pillement but created etchings based on his paintings by using the “a la poupee†or multi-colour Intaglio copperplate engraving style of printmaking which breathed life into the intricate scenes. This portfolio reproduces many of her portfolios as well as those executed by Gauthier Dagoty Canot Avril and Robert Cooper. Ernst Henri, hardcover

First edition of this scarce World War I-era greeting card and advertising promotions salesman’s sample catalogue filled with beautifully executed printer’s samples to help raise morale during the brutal second year of the Great War. 1915 opened with the disheartening Neuve Chapelle offensive by General Haig and subsequent political fallout battles of Aubers Ridge Festubert Loos as well as Zeppelin bombings and U-Boat blockade transformed the War and Great Britain into an all out effort and grinding stalemate of trench warfare. With millions of men separated from their families and homes W.N. Sharpe and other publisher’s quickly expanded and adapted ensuring that postcards and greeting cards were supplied so that people far from loved ones could exchange morale-boosting messages. These greeting cards were available to be embossed with regimental badges flags of the allies patriotic messages and would prove to be wildly popular during the opening years of the War. When initially prepared for printing in late 1914 there were only 25 Regimental badges but this quickly grew to 62 and here Sharpe has included the updated list. The greeting cards and Christmas cards feature Bromide photos of English Bulldogs with British Empire flags; soft-focus images of idyllic rural scenes mothers & children; Naval scenes; flower arrangements and even King George V. By the early 20th-Century W.N. Sharpe was one of the largest greeting card and postcard colour printing companies in the World on par with Raphael Tuck and were well known for their famed “Patent FAB Patchwork Card†which featured a decorative square of silk that could be cut out and worked into a pin cushion or tea cozy. Following World War I they would continue to expand into producing stationery wedding cards and stationery birthday cards along with calendars postcards and many other paper ephemera. In 1937 they would built the historic 76000 square foot Hallmark House in Bradford and later in 1984 was acquired by Hallmark Cards of the United States. Two different printer's devices to title-page and final leaf of each volume. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards; 2 clasps each. Nicolini's rare five-volume collection of Synods, surpassing all previous collections (cf. LThK). - All volumes but the first bear a ms. dedication on the front flyleaf: "Dises Buech ist dem Herrn Spitelmaister unnd seinem Convent zu Memmingen von Herr Jacob Fugger dem Eltern verehrt worden Imm December Ao. 1588"; all volumes are marked on their spines as "Donum generosi dni. Baronus Jacobi Fuggeri" (the original flyleaf of vol. 1 is probably lost). Jacob Fugger (1542-98; after 1560: Herr von Babenhausen, Wellenburg und Boos) was the son of the banker Anton Fugger (nephew and successor of Jacob Fugger "the Wealthy"). He was known as "the Elder" to distinguish him from his like-named nephew (1567-1626) who in 1588 was still a student in Rome and later became Bishop of Constance. - Slight worming throughout, more pronounced in vol. 2 (especially near beginning and end; some loss to text). The splendid, exceptionally well-preserved pigskin bindings (slightly rubbed, back cover of vol. 2 showing minute chafing, otherwise perfect) are probably the work of the Augsburg master Jakob Bitmer (cf. Haebler). Adams C 2773. Edit 16, CNCE 13060. LThK VI, 185. OCLC 6967756. Not in BM-STC Italian. Binding's plate stamps: Haebler I, 55f.: I.B. VI, plates I & II.

8vo. 31, (1) pp. Later blue wrappers. A compact Latin treatise on the ancient medical art of cupping, recorded already in the works of classical medical writers Galen and Celsus. This pocket-size booklet contained everything a doctor needed to know to make use of the technique in mid-sixteenth century Europe. - As typical of humanist medical studies, the anonymous work begins with a brief reflection on the Greek origins of cupping. It then describes the uses of the technique for the extraction of blood and the manipulation of the humours. Already on page 4 the relative safety of the non-invasive procedure is emphasised: "Idque auxilium ut minus vehemens, ita magis tutum". The author then goes on to discuss the various materials used for making the cups or "cucurbitulae" (literally, "little pumpkins" or "gourds"), how to use them, for how long, where in the various areas of the body, and against which ailments they can be employed. Modern readers interested in the history of the use of cupping to reduce pain and inflammation in the lower back will be pleased to see mention of the technique to this end on pp. 27-28. - The book has moderate to severe browning to the edges of the pages thoughout, more pronounced on pp. 11-14 but not affecting the text. On the first and final pages, the cover has formerly become adhesed to the paper, the later removal of which has left marks. The paper cover shows some black staining to the spine; numerous tears in the wrapper reveal frequent use. Rare. BM-STC French 126. Adams D 169. Wellcome I, 1690. OCLC 17534872. Not in Durling.

18001744c.1800. Eight decorative writing sheets of laid paper with elaborate engraved decorative borders with hand-colouring each contemporaneously mounted to card with pink and blue coloured paper edges and a blank sheet of laid paper affixed to the rear. The group including five different designs. Each measuring between 36.5 x 26cm and 33 x 24cm. Three apparently unused the other five with contemporary cut blank paper sections affixed to the central panels presumably to cover previous manuscript text/signs of use. There is rubbing to the coloured paper edging and some occasional light finger marking and dust soiling otherwise condition is very good indeed. A visually striking collection of writing sheets dating to the close of the eighteenth century most likely French decorated with vibrantly hand-coloured engraved Rococo borders incorporating fairies cherubs and sphinxes. Their particular use in this instance is somewhat unclear although being mounted to stiff card and with some having replaced sections to the blank panel it possible that they were being utilised as menu cards. unknown
