br. Il 9 giugno 1870 Charles Dickens muore a cinquantotto anni a Gads Hill, la sua casa a Higham, nel Kent. La notizia del suo decesso fa subito il giro del mondo. Negli Stati Uniti, Longfellow, il poeta più famoso del secondo Ottocento americano, dichiara di non aver mai assistito a un cordoglio tanto diffuso per la morte di un autore, con «il Paese intero colpito dal lutto». Il giorno successivo alla sua dipartita, il Daily News sentenzia: «È stato senza dubbio il romanziere di quest'epoca». In Inghilterra l'opprimente senso di perdita attraversa tutte le classi sociali, in primo luogo la classe lavoratrice che si è sentita ampiamente rappresentata nelle sue opere.
