Probably a part of a serie of theatre plates this is numbered 40. Full length portrait of the actor E. F. Saville as Jack Sheppard in the adaptation of Harrison Ainsworth's novel by J. T. Haines; striking a stance with legs apart facing 3/4 to the left and firing a pistol. Jack Sheppard 1702-24 was an 18th-century English thief who managed four spectacular escapes from London prisons before he was hanged in 1824. He became a favourite figure in verse popular plays romances and burlesques.John Kilby Green was a publisher of theatrical prints sold through agents not from his own address often with imprint 'I K Green and he spent the most of this time in the Toy theatre “Juvenile Drama†industry. unknown

First edition of this unusually scarce catalogue marketing the several models of Spurden-Rutt’s electric Organestra pipe organ intending to compete with Compton Wurlitzer & Christie organs. The Palace Cinema Slough Theatre in Buckinghamshire and Super Cinema in Oxford had ordered models by the time this was issued and they provided an exceptional accompaniment to the silent movies playing at the time. Spurden-Rutt 1881-1960 apprenticed with Alfred Kirkland of Holloway opened his business in 1899 at the age of 18 and lived in his factory with his living room doubling as a board room. In order to impress clients and visitors with how many staff he would have them run around removing and changing coats appearing in assorted different rooms. He continued as an organ builder until 1959. Brown and white illustrations. Binding mis-stapled; leaves detached with slight tear at gutters from pulling through the upper staple; slight bump to lower corner. Program for the annual New Year's variety show at San Quentin offering everything from the acrobat trio Sing Lee Sing and "whip crackers" Buck and Chickie to actress Toy Yat Mar The Skating Millers and 3-year-old singing sensation Lyndell Sandeen. Numerous San Francisco clubs provided entertainment as well -- Sinaloa Cafe Bimbo's 365 Club President Theatre and Charlie Low's Forbidden City -- and Hitch King served as the Master of Ceremonies. In addition to the list of performers the program includes an introduction by warden Clinton T. Duffy a tribute to Harry Ettling the founding producer of the show who died in 1947 from the Men of San Quentin and short introductions to the show's new producer Elmer Langmaid and Hitch King.A scarce record of prison entertainment and the local community's contributions to it. After more than a decade of successful original radical stage productions and adaptations of works by playwrights such as Bertold Brecht and Gertrude Stein founders Judith Malina and Julian Beck used their space and resources for the nourishment of the arts more broadly offering the theatre for literary benefits film screenings and musical performances such as the one advertised here. <br /> <br /> Approximately 9 x 4 inches. 37060Good. - An original 9-1/2 inch high by 7-3/8 inch wide sepia-toned matte-finish photograph of the American stage actress and producer Katharine Cornell. The image portrays the lovely Katharine Cornell seated on the floor in three-quarter profile. Attired in a shoulderless patterned dress the actress looks up to the side. Inscribed "Best Wishes" and signed "Katharine Cornell" at center right. Apparently once framed the photograph is mounted on cardboard and the very edges are slightly rubbed. Remnants of paper backing adhere to verso of the heavily rubbed cardboard mount. The photograph itself is near fine. <p>Born in Berlin to American parents the American stage actress Katharine Cornell 1893-1974 was dubbed "The First Lady of the Theater" by the critic Alexander Woolcott. Beyond the stage she was also a writer theater owner and producer. Raised in Buffalo New York she married the stage and film director Guthrie McClintic who often directed those serious Broadway dramas in which she starred. She is perhaps best known for her portrayal of the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning in the 1931 production of "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" and was the first performer to receive the Drama League Award for her 1935 portrayal of Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet" and a Tony Award for her portrayal of Cleopatra in the 1947 production of "Antony and Cleopatra". unknown

Very good. - A quote alluding to his role as the statue of Adonis which comes to life in the burlesque musical of the same name "I never was born / I was quarried" signed by the American stage and screen actor Henry E. Dixey. The quote penned on 3-3/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide paper is dated "Sept 18th / 86". The paper is mounted in glue from the verso onto heavier stock which was once mounted into an album. The top right corner is diagonally clipped though not affecting the text. Very good. <p>Born in Boston the American actor and theatre producer Henry E. Dixey 1859-1943 joined the cast at the Howard Athenaeum when only 9 years old playing the child character Peanuts in Augustin Daly's "Under the Gaslight". He went on to perform in many plays and musicals and was best known for his role in the burlesque musical "Adonis" from 1883 to 1885. Dixie played the title role of a handsome male statue that comes to life and finding the ways of man unpleasant chooses to turn back into stone. Dixie went on to perform other roles on stage and in silent movies. He was one of the group of "gentlemen" invited by Robert Emmet Odlum to witness his fatal jump from the Brooklyn Bridge and was the one who timed the jump with his gold stopwatch.
