1970218381970. African AmericanTheatre Black Theatre Production Archive ca. 1970s. Three silver gelatin prints. Each approx. 5 x 7 in. Photographer: Paul Buckholdt Atlanta Georgia. An evocative photographic archive capturing Black stage performance in mid-century Atlanta these three images-Circa 1970s-offer a rare and powerful visual document of regional Black theater. Shot by Atlanta-based photographer Paul Buckholdt the photographs document an ensemble of African American actors engaged in emotionally intense and physically expressive performances. The productions are unidentified but exhibit hallmarks of experimental and socially conscious theater with strong visual affinities to works influenced by the Black Arts Movement and Southern community theater traditions. The photographs appear to be of different productions but share some of the same actors possibly a repertory cast. The first photograph depicts a barefoot actor at center draped in classical robes surrounded by fellow performers in matching garments adopting stylized poses of deference or resistance-suggestive of ritual theater potentially a mythic drama. The second image features a domestic interior: a woman in a plaid dress is caught in a moment of confrontation flanked by two men-one seated behind a wooden chest the other looming behind her-capturing a charged tableau of familial or communal tension. The third image shows a five-man cast in a living room set gathered around a piano and seated furniture the action centered on a standing figure in suspenders gesturing emphatically suggesting a naturalistic setting with underlying political or intergenerational themes. Faint discoloration marks to two prints otherwise clear and well preserved. Overall very good condition. This small but significant archive offers an uncommon glimpse into Black theatrical productions in the American South presenting a visual record of cultural expression identity and resistance staged before predominantly local audiences. unknown

24584Material all dating from 1950. ‘Everybody’s’ magazine 114 Fleet Street London. From the Macqueen-Pope papers. See his entry and that of Brooke in the Oxford DNB. The five items are in good condition lightly aged and worn. ONE: Carbon of Typed Article titled ‘London Was Unlucky to Him / The Story of Gustavus Brooke The Tragic Tragedian’. 11pp 4to on eleven leaves. Begins: There is nothing so ephemeral as the art of the actor. Very very few of the names live on. Yet there are some who in their day were of the first magnitude and are now forgotten save for the delving historian. That is a pity for many of them deserve a niche in Fame and such a one was Gustavus Vaughan Brooke the Tragic Tragedian. His life was one long exciting adventure of triumph and disaster. . He was one of the great ones of the early nineteenth century. His life ad his career resembled that of Edmund Kean.’ TWO: Carbon of apparently earlier draft of article. 11pp 4to. No changes to text are apparent but the layout is different. THREE: Another carbon of Item Two. FOUR: Carbon of TL from MP to the editor of ‘Everybody’s’ Greville Poke also see his entry in the Oxford DNB. 13 July 1950. He is sending ‘the story of Gustavus Brooke. I know it is a little long but believe me it is a great story.’ He has ‘plenty of illustrations’. Elsewhere he writes that he is ‘rather sorry’ Poke did not like his ‘suggestion concerning the musical comedy situation because this turned out to be what I think is one of the best articles I have ever written. I sold it elsewhere at once’. FIVE: TNS written on behalf of the editor of ‘Everybody’s’ magazine Greville Poke also see his entry in the Oxford DNB on the magazine’s letterhead 14 July 1950. 1p 4to. Signed ‘for Greville / WS’. Reads: ‘My dear Popie / Thanks for sending along the manuscript of GUSTAVUS BROOKE. I shall be getting into this in the near future I hope.’ Material all dating from 1950. Thompson Esqr. 34 Bedford Street Covent Gard.' He has 'already so many unpublished Plays' in which he has 'the right of Representation' that he must 'decline making any further purchases at present'. But even if he were 'inclined to make further purchases it would most certainly be in Copyright and not in rights to print - which I suppose is what you mean by the term Printing Copyright'. 22488No place or date. The text is on one side of a 13 x 16 cm piece of laid watermarked paper. The signature 'J. Kemble' is at bottom left in slightly-darker ink than the fifteen lines of text. Lightly aged and with short closed tears at edges of two folds. Slight traces of brown-paper mount at top corners on reverse which carries a capable ink drawing of 'the Caducean Trident' mentioned in the text: a dragon with two sets of wings body stiff as a rod encircled by two snakes. The text which has a few deletions and interpolations indicating original composition may refer to a prop required for a dramatic production by Kemble. It reads: 'Albion having accepted from his cousin Mercury God of Commerce his original Caduceus and from his father Neptune his original Trident requested of Vulcan to new mould them making the two into one badge of sovereign authority symbolical of commercial supremacy and marine dominion. In compliance with this request Vulcan produced the Caducean Trident. The Dragon is the symbol of a military marine; vigilant swift terrible and potent; and the Serpents are the types of the sagacity address and prudence of Commerce which is the source and foundation of naval power; and therefore this symbolical sceptre of Albion is in a tridental form well at sic its lower as well as its upper extremity.' No place or date. unknown

From 1939 until the time of his death he ran his own studio. After the war he became well known as a theatre photographer working for theatres including the Old Vic. He photographed over 1000 productions and his portraits of actors writers and musicians gained him a high reputation. For the last twenty years of his career he worked mainly on advertising and commercial photography.’ Macqueen-Pope would have come into contact with Vickers through his work as Drury Lane press agent and he and his daughter were photographed by McBean. 1p 4to. Subheadings on ‘Photographs taken on stage’ with charge for Press and Display prints and ‘Glossy Press Prints’ ‘Studio Portraits’ and ‘COPYRIGHT’.
