Mary Russell Mitford's play Foscari premiered at the Theatre Royal on November 4th 1826 less than ten days before this performance. The play's protagonist Francesco Foscari was the longest reigning doge in Venetian history. Foscari was played by Charles Kemble a member of the great Kemble acting family alongside Charles Mayne Young James Prescott Warde and Daniel Egerton.
