1794373435Boston: Printed for John West 1794. 62pp. 12mo. Disbound. Foxing a few edge tears to title staining to final few leaves small hole with minor loss to final leaf. 62pp. 12mo. Theater had been banned in Boston since the times of Increase Mather at the end of the 17th century. But in 1792 a group of Bostonians petitioned the legislature to repeal the Puritanical laws prohibiting theatrical performances and illegally established a theater in Board Alley. When Governor John Hancock sent his sheriff to shut down a performance a riot ensued. The following year an even bigger theater designed by an American architect and supported by John Quincy Adams and other notables was built at the corner of Federal and Franklin Streets. Known as the Federal Street Theatre or Boston Theatre the building opened at the beginning of February 1794 with a performance of Henry Brooke's Gustavus Vasa.<br /> <br /> Widespread publication of the plays did occur until after the Revolution when a rising middle and upper class demanded the cultural improvement of the young nation. "The market in America for published plays was determined by the theatre. It was the playgoer who bought plays and he bought the text of the play he had just seen or the one he was about to see performed on the stage. The absence of sustained theatrical activity-in fact the failure of the theatre to establish itself-in the English colonies during the first half of the eighteenth century suggests why no editions of plays were published in America during that time" Stoddard.<br /> <br /> In December 1793 with the opening of the Federal Street Theatre imminent Boston publishers David and John West proposed the publication of a selection of plays. "West proposed 'to obtain from the manager of the new theatre such plays of merit as will be performed in Boston the ensuing winter and it will be his aim to have them ready for delivery as near the time of performance as possible . They shall be printed weekly . The price to subscribers stitched in blue paper will be twenty cents each play' . West's ambition exceeded his capabilities but between January 4 and April 30 1794 he published thirteen numbers i.e. plays'" Stoddard. This of course included the first play at the Boston Theatre: Gustavus Vasa.<br /> <br /> The work was issued separately although also published within West's nonce volume A Selection of the Most Esteemed Plays Performed at the Theatre in Boston. The three scripts are present as well as cardboard slats to move the figures about the stage. 17992Without place or date but with 'Adelphi' i.e. the Adelphi Theatre London written inside the front cover. 16pp. of which 12pp. in 8vo and 4pp. in 4to. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. Neatly written out with underlinings in red ink. Loosely inserted in the marbled wraps of an exercise book with 'Adelphi' in pencil on the inside of the front cover. The first scene is written out complete on ten leaves from the exercise book now loose with the main text on ten pages and additions on two versos. In addition to this is a grey paper bifolium carrying over 4pp. 4to additional matter to be inserted at the beginning of the second scene. In pencil on two of the pages are actors' names perhaps giving a clue of context: 'Mr Cole' and 'Mr Hill'. The pantomime may bear some relation to the Grimm fairy tale 'Hansel and Gretel'. The first scene opens with the directions: 'Exterior of the Golden Pipkinn by Sunset. Door Practicable. Music. Enter Jacob followed by Peter earnestly conversing.' The directions at the beginning of the second scene are: 'Enter Gretchen with Cloak & Lanthorn'. The language is spirited the first scene beginning: 'Jacob As clean as a smelt as smooth as a scalded pig. Peter What not one left Jacob No nor a ghost of one either.' The second scene ends: 'Gretchen exit in huff after slapping face. O if I had that pig whip here. Then Hans goes to original commencement of Scene.' Lightly aged and worn and ruckled from being laid down on paper backing. Tiny chip lost at foot. Sixteen female figures are shown in costumes representing newspapers from the 'Daily Mail' to 'The Sketch' and including 'Mdlle. Zangfretta as Fashion' around a central representation of a scene from the ballet featuring Adeline Genée as the Liberty of the Press. Mark Edward Perugini in his 'Art of Ballet' 1915 states of Genée that 'it was her performance as the Spirit of the "Liberty of the Press" in the famous Empire ballet "The Press" invented and designed by Mr. Wilhelm with the choreographic support of Mme. Lanner and music by Mons. Wenzel on February 14th 1898 that first marked her "and for many years to come" as a London "star." The ballet gave her scope for some wonderful and proved immensely popular. It was a novel idea artistically carried out and illustrated the history and power of the Fourth Estate. A number of charming coryphees were ingeniously attired as representatives of the various newspapers boys' costumes indicating the morning and girls' the evening journals. The venerable Times was typified by a man in the guise of Father Time with hour-glass and other symbols of his ancient office and accompanied by a retinue. Mme. Cavallazzi represented Caxton Father of the Printing Press; Mile. Zanfretta the Spirit of Fashion; and there were typical costumes for The Standard The Daily Telegraph The Globe The Daily Mail then two years old! The Illustrated London News who announced that she was " Established 1842 " The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News The Lady's Pictorial The Sketch The Referee and others too numerous to name. So popular did the ballet prove that this also ran for months and it was not until October of the same year that a new production " Alaska" was staged the scenario of which was by Mr. Wilhelm the choregraphy by Mme. Folded a few closed tears repaired on the reverse with archival washi red chop on reverse causing a little show-through at lower right. Overall very good. 45.5 x 71cm. Attractive black and white 1902 theatre poster advertising two performances on the 1 January 1902 of the Yamaguchi Theatre Group . The matinee performance starting at 9am was a patriotic play of five acts titled "Flag Fluttering Wind of Japan". The evening performance comprising six acts began at 5pm and appears to feature various kabuki plays under the title "Actors' Temperaments". <br> <br>The Yamaguchi Theatre Group was a part of the Shinpa 新派Theatre movement which incorporated both modern and traditional theatrical themes during Meiji period. This style and theme remains popular up till present day. Interestingly in this theatre group actors were all male playing both male and female roles. . unknown

A woodblock-printed poster advertising a "Concert of Classical and Modern Songs Negro Spirituals" by the "excellent American singer" Charles Boucher. Charles Boucher is further described here as the winner of the first prize at the St. Louis Opera and also the first prize at the Lille Conservatory. We could locate no historical information on him. Chatel Guyon where the present concert took place is located in central France and is known today as a spa town. Imprimerie SUAU unknown
1973List2919New York City: George Fenmore Associates 1973. Sixteen page booklet measuring 9 x 12 inches. Some wrinkling some marginal damage overall excellent. The Negro Ensemble Company was opened in 1967 by actor and playwright Douglas Turner Ward actor and producer Robert Hooks and producer Gerald Krone with a grant from the Ford Foundation. It provided free theater training—both in acting and in behind-the-scenes work—to Black people in New York City and put on plays relevant to the community. Notable alumni of the NEC include Angela Bassett Samuel L. Jackson and Giancarlo Esposito among numerous others.<br /> <br /> Offered here is a booklet about the NEC’s production of Joseph A. Walker’s The River Niger which opened in 1972 in the small off-off-Broadway St. Marks Playhouse theater. The play was so popular that it played for weeks longer than planned at St. Marks and then opened on Broadway in 1973. Walker won a Tony for Best Play for The River Niger the first African-American to do so. The booklet includes photographs of the play and an article about it from Ebony magazine alongside photographs from the group’s many other productions. 1921160171Los Angeles: California Theatre 1921. Archive of 41 vintage photographs of the elaborate stage sets and live performers which supported silent film screenings at the California Theatre in Los Angeles taken during the theatre's first three years in operation 1919-1921. 20 photographs with blindstamps crediting photographer Dick Stagg and 14 with blindstamps crediting photographer J.C. Milligan.<br /> <br /> Photographs housed in an album with typed labels on the versos of the adjacent pages identifying the film screening dates performers and musical numbers. <br /> <br /> The first two photographs in the archive feature a day shot and a striking night shot of the theatre's beautifully elaborate facade followed by a photograph of the "original installation" of the stage and grand staircase. The balance of the photographs however show theatre sets usually with performers present occasionally with the orchestra present and always without the audience present likely taken during rehearsals or after the completion of the set designs. <br /> <br /> The earliest dated photographs in the archive only two and a half weeks after the theatre's opening on December 24 1918 show two different sets for the screening of the 1918 film "Eye for an Eye." The last and latest photograph in the archive shows a parlor set with five costumed actors for the 1921 screening of the 1920 film "Billions." All in all 29 films are represented in the archive.<br /> <br /> Interestingly many of the screening dates of the films represented in the archive coincide with-or date earlier than-the currently believed premiere dates of the films some of which may have had their premiere at the California Theatre. <br /> <br /> Fred Miller opened the California Theatre at 810 S. Main Street in downtown Los Angeles on December 24 1918. The majestic Beaux-Arts cinema housed a capacity of 2000 and was designed by architect Alex B. Rosenthal who also designed the Granada Theatre in Santa Barbara. In 1919 the theatre was bought by Goldwyn Pictures and in 1935 operated as Teatro California often showing Spanish language films until 1983 after which it operated as a grindhouse and pornographic theater. The theater closed in 1987 and was demolished in 1990.<br /> <br /> Photographs: 8 x 10 inches.
