Jay Kaufman 1886-1957 replies to a letter from impresario James Pond who has proposed a lecture series. Kaufman agrees to Pond's terms for the series: "However the one matter which isn't clear is the circulars and printed matter. Still your letter reads that in the event of your undertaking any special mailing campaigns on my behalf the mailing campaigns are to be mutually agreed upon before undertaking. This is satisfactory to me. On the whole I think you will find me very easy to deal with."<p>"Round the Town" was a musical revue produced by Kaufman which was due to open on May 23 1924. The film director Elia Kazan writes that he is unable to write an introduction to Susan Ray's book "I Was Interrupted: Nicholas Ray on Making Movies" which was subsequently published by the University of California Press in 1993. Kazan is completing the third work in his trilogy "Beyond the Aegean" which was published in 1994. He explains "I wish I could. Truly. I start Monday on an editing process of my new 1100 page novel with Knopf. The novel means a lot to me." His schedule is incredibly busy "After which I go to Europe to begin organizing a new film. That is in Paris Turkey and Greece. I hope I live through it all." Signed "Elia". Among his most successful and best-loved films were "Streetcar Named Desire" 1951 "On the Waterfront" 1954 and "East of Eden" 1955. During his career he won two Best Director Oscars received an Honorary Oscar and won three Tony Awards and four Golden Globes. In 1947 he co-founded the Actors Studio and together with Robert Lewis and Cheryl Crawford under the direction of Lee Strasberg introduced "Method Acting". He was known for drawing out the best performances from his actors and steered 21 actors to Oscar nominations resulting in nine wins.</p><p>The widow of the film director Nicholas Ray Susan Ray is a writer and also the president and creative director of The Nicholas Ray Foundation. She oversaw the restoration of Nicholas Ray's last film "We Can't Go Home Again" and made a documentary about the processs "Don't Expect Too Much". Not having heard from his friend New York City Center producer Jean Dalrymple about producing his play Norman Krasna writes "I have a letter from Jose Ferrer who informs me between barbs of witty abuse that he has had some communications with Sylvia Miles." . "I would suspect at this moment the prospect of getting her are fifty-fifty. She hasn't said yes she hasn't said no which is practically a lyric from a famous Jerome Kern show." He goes on to write that he understands if she hasn't been able to get any backing "we are in a most peculiar business at a difficult time and it is perfectly all right if you pass us by. Sad but all right." Signed "Norman". Folded for mailing with a pencil line indicating that Jean has read the letter else fine.</p><p>Together with a retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's reply dated June 19 1976. Having been away Jean replies "I have been in Russia for a while making a film on ballet. and so I am terribly late in replying to your very very nice letter." Judy couldn't you return for a bit" She concludes with wam regards ". and maybe you have a new play easier to cast"</p><p>The American screenwriter playwright producer and film director Norman Krasna 1909-1984 was known for his screwball comedies based on a case of mistaken identity. He wrote several successful Broadway plays including "Dear Ruth" and "John Loves Mary" and directed 3 films "The Ambassador's Daughter" "The Big Hangover" and "Princess O'Rourke" all of which he also wrote and was nominated 4 times for screenwriting Academy Awards winning once for "Princess O'Rourke".</p><p>The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. He goes on to write that he's not seen Dodie's movie "as you know the only films I see now are on TV." "I shall be pleased to meet Dody sic and her Dad with you any time convenient but I doubt if I could be of much help to them in any way especially now that she has proved successful in her line." He mentions the late life marriages of such celebrities as Charles Coburn and Monte Blue and the shock of Errol Flynn's death and concludes that he "Shall be pleased to hear from you around Thanksgiving & arrange a date". The flower shop's stamp dated April 19th indicates that the order was paid for with a couple of pencil markings. Near fine.</p><p>The American businessman Harold J. Roig 1886-1972 was Vice Chairman of the W.R. Grace & Co. by the time he retired in 1950. He'd first joined this international industrial company as counsel in 1915 and organized its legal department. A graduate of Cornell and Columbia Law School he was a member of numerous associations and several exchanges. He was a member and secretary of the Government agency that regulated the supplies of Chilean nitrate of soda during WWI and following the war was put in charge of Grace's Chilean nitrate sales. He took part in establishing Grace National Bank. In his role with Grace he was a pioneer in commercial aviation in South America being instrumental in the establishment of Panagra Pan American Grace Airways which flew the first U.S. certified route to Buenos Aires by way of South America's West Coast.</p> Delray Beach, Florida, April 16, 1957.

The British actress and theatre director writes to her friend Jean Dalrymple to let her know of her busy British tour itinerary hoping Jean can join her at some point "This is our itinerary as far as we can predict at the present time. I hope you can join us somewhere along the way." Her itinerary includes teaching classes and rehearsals at Thorndike Theater followed by performances of Henri Gheon's "The Sausage Maker's Interlude" and "St Ann & the Gouty Rector". She is then preparing for the Edinburgh Festival and has underlined that the "Edinburgh Festival opens Monday August 22nd." She will be returning to New York in September and mentions that "Michael Parva will probably be in touch with you. An excellent young man whose wife Cynthia is a credit to us all having secured a contract with 'The Utter Glory of Morisey Hall' with Nagle Johnson." She closes with "Much love and don't eat any citrus fruit!" Signed Joan". There is vertical fold at left else near fine. <p>The American theatrical producer & director Earl Carroll 1893-1948 was also a songwriter and composer. He produced numerous Broadway musicals including his "Earl Carroll's Vanities" "Earl Carroll's Sketchbook" and "Murder at the Vanities". Famous for featuring lightly clad showgirls in his productions Carroll was known as "the troubadour of the nude". He built the Earl Carroll Theatre in New York and later another on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Carroll was prosecuted and served time for perjury following a 1926 scandal. Carroll had thrown a lavish private party in honor of Harry Kendall Thaw at which a young nude woman was featured bathing in a tub full of illegal liquor. The editor of the New York Mirror Philip Payne was a guest and published a report of the event which drew the attention of Federal authorities. Prohibition being in force authorities investigated and though Carroll denied it happened other guests confirmed the story. Accused of perjury Carroll served six months at the Atlanta Penitentiary. Carroll wrote the scores for the Broadway shows "So Long Letty" "Canary Cottage" and "The Love Mill" even writing the libretto for the latter. unknown

Loosely based on the 1953 musical by Abe Burrows and composed by Cole Porter. <br/><br/>This listing contains both a larger folio and a smaller quarto variant for the film both very different programs. The larger program is quite uncommon in stiff color illustrated wrappers. The quarto is the more commonly found variant of the program. <br/><br/>The time-honored romance film trope in which Frank Sinatra plays a gun-shy sap unwilling to marry Can-Can dance club owner Shirley MacLaine until she becomes engaged to someone else that "someone" played here by the intimidating Maurice Chevalier. This time though the age-old story is set on the scintillating backdrop of 1890s Can-Can dancing. Nominated for two Academy Awards. <br/><br/>Though the film substantially changes the plot of the original musical and adds a number of Porter's best-known songs to the film's soundtrack "Can-Can" was the second-highest grossing film of 1960 having been beaten out only by "Ben-Hur."<br/><br/>Folio contains 28 pages in illustrated wrappers including a front flap saddle stapled 11.5 x 15 inches.
