Good in original pictorial paper-covered boards with black titling on the spine and a black engraving on the front beneath the title. The pages are both delicate and tanned with age but intact with the crisp images and text. This copy was one of 610 copies printed by The Black Sun Press following the original publication in French in the 1920s. This printing contains dual English and French text accompanied by dozens of black and white illustrations. An early work from Eluard who provided the text inspired or dislocated rather by Ernst's images. A wonderful and strange collaboration. Black Sun Press hardcover

A superb limited first edition English translation of Paul Éluard's poetry. Number 235 of 500 copies signed by the translators Roland Penrose and E. L. T. Mesens. The majority of Éluard's poems were originally published in separate publications throughout 1942 whilst France was under German occupation. This the first bilingual collection of his work with the English and French on opposing pages. Bound in the publisher's original paper wraps with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Printed on hand made paper with deckled edges multiple uncut leaves. Illustrated with a line-drawn portrait of Paul Éluard by Man Ray dated 1936. A founding figure of the Surrealist movement who remained in France during the war Éluard's verse encapsualates the terror of the French occupation with themes of liberté patience and entrapment. This poetry book was published as part of a series of French poetry from all over the world edited by Mesens. This copy would make a pleasing addition to any global poetry collection. Bound in the publisher's original paper wraps with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally in smart condition. Cela à notre connaissance n'a jamais été signalé mais ce texte est celui d'une conférence d'avant-guerre que reprend ici Paul Éluard en vue de les faire publier par Pierre Seghers comme il s'en ouvre à son ami Louis Parrot dans une carte interzones du 14 avril 1942. Le 21 février 1939 à l'initiative de la compagnie du Diable écarlate dirigée par Sylvain Itkine dont la troupe avait joué dans les usines occupées lors des grandes grèves de juin 1936 Éluard était en effet intervenu au Proscenium d'Europe du Théâtre Pigalle et de nombreux encarts l'avaient annoncé dans la presse. Dans son édition du 25 mai 1939 Excelsior revenait sur l'événement et parlait expressément d'une « séance de poésie involontaire et de poésie intentionnelle » présentée par une conférence de Paul Éluard où à côté des poèmes de Rimbaud d'Apollinaire de Laforgue et de Raymond Roussel on entendait le « Vieux Paralytique » de Jules Jouy les « Admirables Secrets du Grand Albert » un rêve d'un enfant de onze ans une lettre de la religieuse portugaise et les « Impudiques » de Victor Litschfousse. « J'ai lu votre texte et les citations avec une belle joie s'enthousiasme Seghers auprès d'Éluard dès le 22 mai 1942 je suis ravi et je vais m'employer au succès absolument certain. . Je pars pour Lyon mardi apporter le texte à l'imprimeur. Je veux une typo simple mais heureuse. Je prends pour vous mes dernières rames de papier ». Deux jours plus tard dans une lettre à Parrot du 24 mai Éluard souhaitant son livre « utile fécond » précise son « intention profonde » : « amener l'esprit poétique en France dans des contrées mal appréciées jusqu'ici à une plus vaste objectivité à sa mère "la vie de tous les hommes" ». Tandis que des fragments de citations sont confiés au groupe la Main à plume de Noël Arnaud qui les publie avec d'autres textes dans La Conquête du monde par l'image le projet s'enrichit encore de quelques citations nouvelles qu'Éluard communique à Parrot dans deux lettres des 30 et 31 mai 1942 Éluard livre d'identité p. 186 puis des tracasseries de la censure retardent un peu le projet de sorte que le livre est sous presse le 8 juillet 1942 seulement en retard sur l'achevé d'imprimer. « Si profond que soit l'engagement de Paul Éluard dans la vie politique et nationale fera remarquer Decaunes dans sa biographie p. 202-203 il n'en renonce pas pour autant à ce qui demeure à ses yeux la plus haute fonction de la poésie : la découverte la conquête par le moyen du langage à travers le langage de tous les trésors de l'homme . C'est pourquoi la publication en pleine occupation de Poésie involontaire poésie intentionnelle est d'un certain point de vue un acte au moins aussi significatif que celle des poèmes de résistance. » C'était d'ailleurs en ce sens qu'il s'était rapproché de Noël Arnaud.
