On peut aussi comprendre le titre comme le superlatif de la souffrance de la douleur. Le titre est en soit une ÂŽnigme. Mais ce titre ÂŽnigmatique ne doit pas masquer les cris de dÂŽsarroi qui retentissent ˆ chaque vers et l'emportent sur les chants de bonheur amoureux. Les jours sont nostalgiques des jours de pluie de miroirs brisÂŽs de malchance. Mais Eluard ne capitule pas devant l'adversitÂŽ il veut dissiper la "brume de fond" o il se meut et la fin du recueil est rÂŽsolument optimiste "Je chante pour chanter je t'aime pour chanter" il appelle le "grand jour" ou il respirera "les parfums ÂŽclos d'une couvÂŽe d'aurores".
