Includes bibliographical references.<br> “Jacob Abraham Maryson was a Jewish–American anarchist doctor essayist and Yiddish translator. Maryson was among the few Pioneers of Liberty who could write in English. He was among the Pioneers who launched the Varhayt in 1889 the first American anarchist periodical in Yiddish….Maryson contributed to a variety of other Yiddish publications and became known as ‘the Kropotkin of the Jewish anarchist movement’. During Fraye Arbeter Shtime's hiatus in the late 1890s Maryson assisted in the cultural and literary journal Di Fraye Gezelshaft. Beginning in 1911 he edited the anarchist periodical Dos Fraye Vort. Maryson organized the Kropotkin Literary Society to print Yiddish translations of European thinkers. Maryson handled some of the group's most challenging translations including Marx's Das Kapital Stirner's The Ego and His Own and Thoreau's Civil Disobedience. IN YIDDISH AND HEBREW. RARE Yizkor book (memorial book) commemorating the Jewish community of Falenica annihilated in the Holocaust. Falenica is a part of Wawer, one of districts of Warsaw on the right bank of the Vistula, in the far southeastern corner of the city (until 1951 a separate village, afterwards became part of Warsaw). Falenica is located along the main rail line, which connects Warsaw with Lublin. During World War II the Germans opened a Jewish ghetto there, called Falenica-Miedzeszyn Ghetto. All of its inhabitants were transported to Treblinka in August 1942. Contains many b&w photographs. 280x220mm. 478 pages. Black cloth Hardcover with gilt front cover and spine. " This collection of reports can be assumed to be one of the earliest publications of the Agudat Yisroel after its founding. The Agudat Yisrael is a political movement of Orthodox Jewry, founded at a conference in Kattowitz (Upper Silesia; today Katowice, Poland) in May 1912. The 300 delegates at the Kattowitz conference faced the complex and challenging task of overriding very real differences among traditional communities in Germany, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, and elsewhere. The goal in forming Agudas Yisroel was to create an overarching, 'ecumenical' Orthodox identity to be shared by all these communities, represented by one organization. A compromise view prevailed, and individual communities were allowed to make their own decisions at local and regional levels. Though some steps were taken to set up a larger organization, including plans for establishing a world body of Agudas Yisroel to be called the Kenesiyah Gedolah (Great Assembly) , the outbreak of World War I made plans to convene such a conference in August 1914 impossible. He published collections of folk songs and songs for children, and was active in the Polish cantors' organization. Born in Warsaw, Shatzky [1893-1956] received his doctorate in 1922 for a dissertation on 19th-century Polish-Jewish history. During World War I he served as an officer in the Polish Legion. From 1913 on he wrote Polish articles and reviews on Jewish literary and historical subjects. He came to write mainly in Yiddish after 1922, the year he settled in the U. S. Where he was one of the founders of the U. S. Section of YIVO. From 1929 until his death he was librarian of the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Shatzky's range was extraordinarily wide: Spinoza, psychiatry, theater, music, folklore, literature, language, and other areas. His principal field, however, was Eastern European Jewish history, and his major work was his history of Warsaw Jewry. He was an indefatigable and often querulous reviewer of scholarly works; the quality and accuracy of his own historical scholarship has often been questioned.
