The recipient is not named but the item derives from the papers of James Payn the editor of the Cornhill Magazine London. Gallenga begins: 'My dear Sir. The last time I saw you - it may be 20 years ago - you were leaving London to write for Chambers in Edinburgh. I see the Journal now and then and I often fancy I detected you.' He is 'almost sure' that Payn wrote 'the article quoting Miss Mitford's letters' and challenges him: 'If I am right say so.' He continues: 'And if you ever are in London let me see you here at the Athenaeum at my house or wherever you like. We need all of us at times to see old friends. Since I saw you I have got on well in the world.' In 1854 through Cavour's influence Gallenga had been elected a deputy to the Italian parliament retaining his seat until 1864. He passed the summer in England and fulfilled his parliamentary duties at Turin in the winter. His employment as a Times correspondent begain during the Austro-Sardinian War of 1859 and continued for twenty years. Exceptional Art Nouveau cover design consisting of gilt ruled borders surrounding a rose tree in full bloom planted in an urn with the title of the book printed on a gilt ribbon entwined around the stem. Other gilt ornamental foliage on the corners of the spine. A rare and captivating Italian guest book with 28 sections of "Confessioni" from visitors. Each "Confessioni" is comprised of a list of 35 questions regarding the tastes preferences and interests of the guests. The subject matter of the queries includes a wide and fascinating variety of subjects ranging from literary opinions to personal defects. Printed on cream stock with gray-green ink each page has several questions a space for the answer and a variety of lovely Art Nouveau ornamental devices. Color title page illustrated with vignettes of a man and woman reading with floral arrangements and ornaments in the style of of Alphonse Mucha. Five pages at the front of the book are to be used as an index. Lovely ornamental "Fine" closes the volume. Binding a bit shaken and some offsetting from the ribbons on to the endleaves hinges else a fine copy of a most unusual Art Nouveau book. Bellesimo! $425.00</p> hardcover

Robert Langton Douglas the noted art critc and writer. The wraps of this scarce item have been taped along the spine. The tape enters the main part of the front wrap at the left margin and at the top left edge. The wraps are soiled and the rear wrap colophon is chipped with some taping at edges as well. The leaves and illustrations are in very nice condition. A scarce item with an important association that could use a careful restoration. Sold as described. . paperback

This was the final collection of Guidi's lyrics issued in his lifetime he is said to have died of an apoplectic fit upon discovering a typographical error in his final book a verse translation of six homilies of Pope Clement XI.
