16430071411643. No Binding. Very Good. Original etching on laid paper circular composition ca. 1643-48. Sheet size approx. 145 x 140 mm. A spirited etching of Bacchanalian Scene with Satyrs and Musicians by Stefano della Bella depicting a lively bacchanalian scene with satyrs and children engaged in music and dance within a wooded landscape. The animated figures fluid movement and delicately balanced composition exemplify della Bella's characteristic lightness of touch and his gift for narrative charm. The circular format enhances the sense of intimacy and rhythmic motion while the fine controlled line work reflects the artist's mastery of engraving and etching. Della Bella was one of the most accomplished printmakers of the Italian Baroque admired for his imaginative pastoral and mythological scenes and influential in both Italy and France. Good overall condition for 17th century print. Light even toning consistent with age and paper type. Minor surface soling and faint scattered foxing primarily in the margins. No major tears or losses. The impression remains clear with well-preserved detail and plate mark

unknown

Villari's autograph on reverse of leaf dated from Florence 2 November 1892. 1p 12mo. Leaf of lightly-browned and creased aged paper with closed tears to one edge. The two men are clearly writing in response to requests for autographs. Marchetti has written out four bars – slightly affected at end by closed tear – from what he states is 'Ruy Blas Preludio'. Beneath this he signs in a firm attractive hand 'F Marchetti'. At the head he dates: 'Roma 14 9bre 92'. On the reverse Villari has written out neatly an eight-line comment on 'Chi cessa d'essere bimbo prima del tempo' losing 'la gaiezza l'innocenza la spontaneità infantile' and all the qualities 'necessari all'uomo'. Beneath the quotation he signs in another attractive hand 'Pasquale Villari Firenze 2 Nov. 92'. Marchetti's autograph on letterhead of the R. Accademia di S. Cecilia ('Liceo Musicale'). "I called to enquire after the notice & took the liberty of sending you last phrase insert about the lectures I am now giving at the London Institution - & was surprised to hear that the Editor of the literary Gazette considers the subject perfectly exhausted - For I have the honour to tell you the view I now take of the origin of polytheism-worship- of animals - Mythology & Idolatry is quite new - for it traces the whole to the original coptic words or names by which the hieroglyphics "were" excised exhibiting the different applications of the power of the Supreme Being were termed - as far as I know no one ever went as far- tho' perhaps from Bacon to our time may authors have surmised that this might underlined be the case but never any one has shown that this was underlined the case.-I hope therefore that the Editor will have the goodness to look over my paper once more - & favour me with inserting it in the next number. 174040863Italy 1740. Oblong folio 222 x 305 mm. Notated in black ink on 10-stave rastrum-ruled paper. Watermark with initials "G.M." within a circle below a trefoil.

Violino primo: 1f.
Violino secondo: 1f.
Unfigured basso continuo: i title 2 i blank pp.

Violino primo part slightly soiled at edges; small tears to blank margins. Violino secondo part with small tear and minor stains to blank margins. Basso continuo part slightly soiled and stained with small tears to margins of title; title and second page of music reinforced at inner margins with early narrow strip of paper. This elegant and lighthearted trio sonata in B-flat major is cast in three movements: Allegro Assai C Andante C and Presto 3/8. Each movement is in binary form with repeats. The opening Allegro Assai incorporates leaping octaves occasional swerves into G-minor terrain and climactic rising scales at its conclusion. The Andante makes use gentle syncopations and slides of a third. The opening two movements start with the Romanesca progression a favorite opening gambit of 18th century composers conveying freshness and an amorous mood. The final Presto is a compact and attractive minuet. Most often the violins harmonize with each other and the bass making frequent use of parallel thirds and sixths; in several spots however they double each other. This may indicate that this work was originally conceived for a larger ensemble with string sections as it is not particularly common to encounter such doubling in chamber music. This sonata may have originally been an orchestral overture to a theatrical work.

Not located in the RISM manuscripts database. unknown
