Lovely 1820 edition of one of the first great modern collections of love poetry written by the Renaissance poet viewed as the "first true reviver of learning in Medieval Europe" Encyclopedia Britannica. The story of Petrarch's love for Laura is well-known but the spirituality and complexity of this love and the cataclysmic loss he felt at her death can be understood only by reading this cycle of his poems. Bound in a modern 1/4 red morocco over marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers. 5 raised bands gilt-rule and gilt-devices within the compartments. A solidly VG copy with very light staining confined to the upper inner margins of the first third of Vol. I. This edition is very handsomely printed as well. Masi the printer boats on the title page that it is printed with types supplied by Fermin Didot the great Parisian printer. Each volume has a lithographed frontispiece portrait accomplished on the stone by F. Wagner. The portrait of Petrarch introduces Vol. I and the portrait of Laura Vol. II.
