Di questo straordinario testo, riconducibile a un autore anonimo vissuto nel I sec. d. C., non ci è infatti giunta dall'antichità testimonianza diretta. La sua enorme fortuna comincia quando Boileau lo traduce in francese e viene recepito dalla cultura moderna. La fortuna del saggio longiniano corre allora parallela all'affermazione del sublime come categoria estetica generale, alimentando senza soluzioni di continuità intere generazioni di pensatori, scrittori, artisti, e continuando a insistere potentemente sul dibattito contemporaneo. Questa terza riedizione, curata con rara perizia da Giovanni Lombardo, offre una nuova e modernissima traduzione italiana, che al rigore filologico unisce una leggibilità aperta al di là degli specialisti di cultura antica, e la arricchisce di esaustivi apparati esegetici, critici e bibliografici.
