1760LTH14-F-25London : C. Hitch and L. Hawes c1760. Leather. Good Only. 6" by 3.5". None. A very scarce early work of prose based on episodes in Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadia. The piece is a prose reduction of Francis Quarles' poem Argalus and Parthenia which itself is based on Arcadia. Frontispiece plate entitled 'The Renowned Argalus and Parthenia' with three other woodcut illustrations. The work is split into four books telling the story of the love between Parthenia and Argalus. This love is threatened by the jealous Demagoras who disfigures Parthenia in the hope of destroying what he cannot have. In a calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed with bumping to corners. Some loss to head and tail of backstrip. Hinges starting but firm. Previous owners bookplate to front pastedown and ink inscriptions to front free end-paper. Internally generally firmly bound though front free end-paper is detached. Text is close cropped. Some foxing throughout and worming to only a couple of pages. Good Only C. Hitch and L. A collection of twelve detailed lithograph views of mid-nineteenth century Waterloo including depictions of monuments erected following the Battle of Waterloo. In both French and English. Collated illustrated with twelve lithographs. Lacking the folding plan of the Battle of Waterloo. Lithographs of Waterloo in this volume include depictions of the Church of Waterloo La Montagne du Lion the Lion of Waterloo and Ferme de la Haye-Sainte. Undated; dated circa 1850 via the British Library. Some of these plates feature the date 1842 in the caption meaning this cannot be the first edition of this work which is typically dated 1840. These lithographs are the work of de Gerard. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Major losses to back strip with significant handling marks to wraps small losses to fore edge head and tail of front wrap and further loss to centre of head of rear wrap. Contains 88 plates of engravings which include topographical views portraits emblematic scenes and reproductions of the engraved title pages of other publications. An interesting if eclectic collection of 18th century engravings and reproductions. An unusual work. Copac lists a copy held at the British Library and copies also held at Yale university. All copies have different numbers of plates and the details of plates vary. The work appears to be a collection of plates chosen by the purchaser intended to display the mastery of English engraving. LIkely the publisher produced a standard set of plates to which the purchaser could add their own choices. With the bookplate of Robert J Hayhurst The title page reads 'from original designs by Stothard Burney Harding Corbould Van Assen Potter Cosway Paul Sandby Mather Brown Catton &C'. In this copy some of these names have been underlined in early ink to which has been added the names Vandyke Bickham Gillot Taylor and others. All the plates in this volume are mentioned in the handwritten contents page. This includes several engravings by George Bickham the Younger. Other illustrations of interest include the two engraved title pages one from the Lady's Pocket Magazine 1795 and the other from The Infant Vision of Shakespeare 1796. Also of note is an unattributed engraving of Isaac Newton which we have been unable to find reproduced elsewhere. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally sound. Marbled boards torn with loss. Front hinge strained after endpaper. Personal bookplate to front pastedown. Internally generally firmly bound. Pencil captions on verso identifying the five subjects in the photograph. <br /> <br /> An unusual composite photograph possibly created to commemorate the unveiling of Albert Weinhart's monument to the Haymarket Martyrs in Forest Home Cemetery finished in 1893. The image pairs a photograph of the monument with an arrangement of portrait vignettes of the five Chicago anarchists: Louis Lingg Albert Parsons George Engel August Spies and Adolph Fischer who were all convicted and condemned to death Lingg committed suicide in his cell prior to his execution on charges of detonating a bomb in Chicago's Haymarket Square in May of 1886. Despite scant evidence and many irregularities in the trial the death sentences were carried out making martyrs of the five condemned men and marking November 11 1887 forever as a day of solemn remembrance in the American labor movement. <br /> <br /> Apparently rare; we can trace no examples of this image at auction or in commerce though with trimmed vestiges of other prints visible at its margins the photograph has the appearance of being a commercially-produced item perhaps hastily created. s.i. unknown
1820239491820. Very good condition. A magnificent unsigned folk art watercolor of a multicolored bird with long tail feathers which are painted in patriotic red white and blue. The striking image is done in an expert and mature hand using 10 or so different colors and with each feather highlighted at the edges with fine pen strokes of color. <br /> <br /> The bird somewhat resembling a peacock in overall shape perches on a willow tree with slender green vines climbing the trunk. Painted on heavy paper 10 x 13" unknown

Photographs are mostly black and white or sepia toned and range in size from 2" x 3" to 5" x 4 1/2" with most being 3 1/2" x 5." First 15 photos are of the Canvey flood. When floods devastated large parts of the East Coast on January 31st and February 1st 1953 Canvey Island in Essex was one of the places that bore the brunt. Fifty-nine people died and 13000 were evacuated from their homes after floodwater engulfed the island. This group of photos is followed by 13 pictures of the lights on Southend Pier in Essex. Southend Pier is a major landmark in Southend-on-Sea. Extending 1.34 miles into the Thames Estuary it is the longest pleasure pier in the world. Additional pictures include Deal Dungeness the Goodwin sands Kingdown St. Margarets-at-Cliffe St. Margaret's Bay Dover Folkestone Hythe Romney Marsh Rye Tenby Pembroke Caldey Island Swanage Isle of Wight Port of Southampton etc. Photos include street scenes masts of ships lost on the Goodwin Sands castles rural scenes churches fishermen railroads and trains homes villages harbor scenes cliffs villagers etc. plus 11 port scenes showing the American liner "United States" pictures aboard the ship tugs leading the ship etc. Final photograph is of the ship "America" arriving in Southampton. Several of the photographs include people going about their lives. Captions neatly written in black ink throughout. All photos are clear and bright with minor edgewear to pages. Two volumes complete for 1825 with anonymous author's founding comments in the first issue No. 1 March 3 1825 through No. XII & XIII August 4 1825. Volume 2: No. XIV Thursday August 18 1825 through No. XIII December 1825. Bound in 3/4 red morocco with lightly rubbed marbled boards and bright marbled endpapers. Bookplate of Scottish Antiquary Arthur David Morice. Remnants of library pocket and slip on endpapers. No other marks. Extensive sepia ink notes which Morice identifies in a pencil note on the back of a piece of ms. laid in the rear dated 1885 as being copied from the interleaved notes of the publisher's own copy publisher and and probable author Lewis Smith. There is another signature which is in the same ink as the notes which signature "Isaac F. Smith "1895" appears on a free front endpaper adjacent to No. I.The transcribed notes are identified by page reference and cover all available spaces on free front and end papers with an additional page laid in upon which Morice has noted their origin. A few other pencil notes by Morice are in the text and a few additional ink notes in the original hand in text and on rear end paper of volume 1. It is not entirely clear if the notes which are in two different ink colors were originally transcribed by Lewis or Isaac Smith the date being quite late for the latter. An UNIQUE COPY. The Aberdeen Censor appeared 3 years before Johnson's London Spectator. Lewis Smith hardcover

Expertly rebacked to match original cloth a bit faded along extremities; frontispiece heavily foxed recent bookseller label to front pastedown else Very Good and sound. Errata slip bound in rear. With numerous contemporary holograph corrections throughout most likely made in preparation of the second edition as many are of a semantic rather than purely factual nature for example on p. 12 lines 2 and 3 from the bottom the text reads: ".figures of the poverty-stricken music-professors of Heilbronn haunted their imaginations". A second edition was published by the London firm of C. & H. Senior in 1840 published under the authorship of a John Sayer and revised by "a lady intimately acquainted for a long period with the circumstances of Mr. Eulenstein's life by whom a few additional facts have been supplied." Whether the annotations in this copy are in Sayer's Welsh's Senior's or the lady's hand is unclear. Traces of a contemporary inscription on original pastedown now obscured by new pastedown would potentially reveal the original owner. Short biographical sketch of the popular German musician Charles or Carl/Karl Eulenstein 1802-1890 whose performances gained him celebrity in Great Britain in the late 1820s and whose preferred instrument the Jews' harp Eulenstein also played the guitar is described on p. 1 as both "eminently beautiful" and in a quotation in a footnote more dissonant than "the creaking of hinges or the mewing of cats." Etymologically the Jews' Harp is not in fact a Jewish musical tradition but a corruption of "Jaw's Harp" one of the oldest known musical instruments dating as far back in China as the 4th century B.C. A fabulous collection of images it documented a 19th-century trip to Moscow of an American traveller. All but one of the photographs featured images of landmarks and views of the city mostly centered around the Kremlin including the Big Bell Tsar Bell the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky the Novodevichii Convent the Triumphal Arch of Moscow several different views of the Kremlin etc. A few of them also showed random people including a peasant with a small stand selling an unidentifiable product and a horse-drawn cart along the Moskva River. s. n. unknown

The album was prepared for and presented to the Vice President of the French Weightlifting Federation Jean Dame in commemoration of the 9th World Festival of Youth and Students "For Solidarity Peace and Friendship" which was held in Bulgaria in July and August of 1968. The festival attracted over 20 000 people from 138 countries.
