Bound in early possibly contemporary quarter sheep with marbled boards red morocco lettering piece gilt all edges marbled. Bookplate of Buddle Atkinson to front paste-down. A sturdy unsophisticated copy frontispiece slightly spotted along folds sporadic light soiling and browning binding rubbed along spine and corners but an excellent example of a scarce book. Buddle Atkinson's bookplate appears in Hugo's Catalogue of Thomas Bewick's works but it is in fact engraved on steel not wood and came from the workshop of Mark Lambert one of Bewick's pupils. The plate was designed and engraved by George F. Robinson who joined Lambert's workshop in 1841 and who in the course of 50 years became chief engraver and director of all art works carried out by the firm. The plate was produced when Atkinson b.1841 was a young child perhaps for putting in books that had been owned by his father John Buddle so it likely dates from 1845-1850. N. B. With few exceptions always identified we only stock books in exceptional condition carefully preserved in archival removable polypropylene sleeves. A smart and complete collection of Meyer's Lexikon an important German encyclopaedia being the seventh edition richly illustrated with colour plates in-text illustrations and maps in colour. Meyer's Lexikon was a German encyclopaedia which first appeared in 1839.This is the seventh edition complete in twelve volumes; this was smaller than previous editions as a result of the economic depression in Germany during the 1920s.Illustrated with around five thousand in-text illustrations over one thousand plates and maps. This includes plates in colour folding plates and maps in colour. Collated complete.In the German language. Complete in twelve volumes. Three supplementary volumes were released later.An excellent collection of the seventh edition of this important German encyclopaedia the final edition completed before the Second World War and Nazification. In a half calf binding. Externally generally smart with just slight wear to the leather spines of most volumes and some bumping to the extremities. Volumes 3 and 4 have more rubbing to the head of the spine with volume 4 having some slight rubbing to the tail as well. Volumes 78 and 9 are a little more faded than the other volumes. Two scarce mid eighteenth century accounts of the life of Simon Fraser 11th Lord Lovat bound together. The first work present here is the very scarce 1746 'Memoirs of the Life of Lord Lovat' with half title and engraved portrait frontispiece.Excitingly this very scarce work was published the year prior to Lovat's execution following his capture in 1746. Lovat's execution in 1747 was the last public beheading in the UK.The ESTC records six variants of this work published by M. Cooper in 1746 without precedence. This copy is ESTC reference T39147 with page 3 catchword 'set' as called for and with title page ornament of a bust with a semi-circular frame of flowers. The second work is the scarce 1747 'A Candid and Impartial Account of the Behaviour of Simon Lord Lovat' providing a brief account of his life between the time the death warrant was delivered and the day of his execution including 'A faithful Narrative of the particular Incidents which happen"d that Day in the Tower in the Sheriff"s Apartment and on the Scaffold'.ESTC reference N4817. Smooth spine. Title in faded red ink. Rolland Le Vayer de Boutigny 1627-1685 was Master of Requests to Louis XIV and one of his influential advisors. Author of novels plays and short stories as well as political and legal treatises this book reveals that Boutigny was trained as a jurist. Peculatus designates the theft of public funds by those who administer them; it was punished by death under Roman law but not under French law. ""Under the Ancien Régime how many ministers were condemned for peculatus and extortion! How many chambers of justice were instituted to make the financiers who pillaged the treasury disgorge their gains in complicity with the superintendents of finance!"" Illustrated with a folding plate as frontispiece and 8 plates including two folding ones. With an engraved medallion on the cover. Spine lacking for two-thirds of its length without affecting the integrity of the work. NB: This item is available at the bookshop upon request within 48 hours. A remarkable record of the Thames Tunnel project. Work began in 1824 and faced numerous difficulties which this pamphlet reports. The tunnel was originally intended for horse-drawn traffic. In 1805 the Thames Archway Company had been founded to build a tunnel under the Thames between Rotherhithe and Limehouse but the scheme was abandoned after more than 1000 feet and was revived in 1824 thanks to Marc Brunel's tunneling system a cast-iron shield in which miners worked in separate compartments excavating the tunnel face. From time to time the shield was pushed forward in large stages while the walls of the tunnel already dug behind were lined with cast-iron rings. The illustration shows this system. It was this method that was later used in the construction of the Underground. The tunnel was finally completed in 1843 and was at first only used by pedestrians before being later acquired for railway traffic. Warrington unknown

54436Barre VT. 1913. Mounted Photographs EARLY AMERICAN SOCCER TEAM winners of the Vermont League and the 5-A-Side Champions of Vermont in 1913. Four mounted black and white photographs. Three photographs of the fourteen team members as well as trainer secretary and mascot each in different attire. One photo of the five-a-side team with trainer. Two large photographs 43cm; 64cm with mount one medium 31cm 46cm with mount and one small 31cm 39cm with mount. The three larger photographs have titles printed to the mounts; two list the names of the team members. The smaller mount has glue stains to edges and reverse. Contained within the boards of a nineteenth century folio-sized atlas. All mounts bumped and rubbed to edges. Atlas boards heavily battered. A few small marks and blooming to photographs. Good. A rare collection of photographs documenting the winning team of the Vermont soccer league in 1913 the same year of the formation of the United States Football Association now U.S. Soccer and its entry into FIFA. The first president of USFA was G. Randolph Manning an Anglo-German migrant to the USA who was also influential in the popularisation of Association Football in Germany. The winning Vermont team here pictured was reportedly made up largely from Aberdonians who had migrated to Barre from Scotland to work in the granite quarries. [Barre, VT]. 1913 unknown

A handwritten late 19th to early 20th century ledger possibly from a solicitor regarding mortgages registers of investments and securities dividends and other financial matters for a small number of clients and addresses.Written in the same hand throughout it is not clear to whom this work belonged. There are handwritten entries to 136 of the 282 pages with entries dated between 1896 and 1906.At the top of a number of pages are such addresses as 105 Winchester House 7 Lothbury London and 6 Albyn Place Edinburgh alongside information on stocks dividends and mortgages.Other leaves offer information on payments from both individuals and companies such as Messrs. Harris & Harris Mrs. Richardson and Frank Rushby. Loosely inserted is a cheque from Rushby to Harris & Harris for a sum of £1836 dated 1903.Other entries are headed with such titles as 'Schedule of Deeds' and entries regarding 'The Rational Bank' and 'The Commercial Bank of India'.A later morocco label to the back strip simply reads 'Journal' and the hinges have been reinforced.A very scarce and highly informative financial ledger offering insight into the economic behaviours of the middle classes at the turn of the century. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Morocco spine label renewed. Rubbing to board perimeters and back strip head and tail.
