1942140941284Portland OR: Np 1942. Good. Original 10 3/4" x 14" poster printed in orange and black on cardboard with a racist caricature of Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo stabbing a salmon. Text reads in its entirety: "The Japs are killing Alaska's fish industry / vote 311 X no against this infamous proposition / closing Oregon's coastal streams will kill Oregon's salmon industry / our boys in service need every case of salmon Oregon can produce!" Good with five small holes and a creased scrape crease down middle from being mounted on a stick either for picketing or as a yard sign verso toned and soiled. Colors still very bright.<br /> <br /> <p>A rare political sign opposed to The Oregon Prohibition of Net Fishing on Coastal Waters Bill also known as Measure 6 with striking graphics typically anti-Japanese in the wake of Pearl Harbor and America's entry into WWII; although a cursory contemporary glance at the bill makes any connection to Japan highly dubious. "The measure would have prohibited all net fishing in coastal streams and bays except those exempted" according to Ballotpedia. It was soundly defeated. Np unknown books

Twelve die-cuts seven different designs in all; illustrated card stock; 4 1/2" in diameter; circular gilt frame; die-cut ladies' figures in various outfits and hats; tabs at the bottom and on verso to be folded in such a way that the figures would stay up none folded; very minor wear to a few; near fine or better condition.A fabulous collection of presumably advertising pieces although similar ones by the same company had been printed on verso to be used as bridge tally cards they all showcased the splendor of Art Deco printing of the 1920s. The publisher P. F. Volland Co. was well known for their beautiful children's books greeting cards games and calendars as well as for publishing significant authors and writers. Chicago: P. F. 30246Quarto three pages of a four page bi-folium written neatly in ink on a pictorial letter-sheet depicting the <i>View from Near the Ferry House U. S. Side</i> at Niagra Falls small oil stain at lower right hand corner else in very good clean legible condition. <br />Our knowledge both of Czech and consequently its orthography are non-existent the identity of the writer could probably be determined by someone without these constraints. The writer has evidently just returned to Europe from America via New York Havre and thence to Paris. He mentions and presumably describes some of the places he visited in America including Chicago Michigan including Huron Detroit and St. Clair Erie Buffalo Niagra Falls et cetera. An interesting and unusual letter recording a Czech traveler's experiences in America. <br /> books

Hardcover. a pretty beat-up copy probably an ex-rental library book although NOT stamped or marked as such in any way; the dust jacket however is backed with brown paper and thoroughly glued down at the flaps which was pretty standard practice for such libraries; in any case the book is heavily worn but internally clean and with its binding intact and the jacket is well a mess. The author of this "distinguished and thoughtful novel about present-day New York" thought it best to cloak himself in anonymity so "that the personages with whom he is acquainted will not be embarrassed by his presence." Sounds like the lesson that Truman Capote never learned. The book's action takes place from mid-1929 to late 1931 a period which in the author's opinion "in a most dramatic way indicates the disintegration of our social system." Written "in the racy speech of the day" the book presents "a dramatic flashlight picture of the hypocrisy and graft -- financial criminal political -- characterizing our society." The New York Times reviewer while finding the book narratively sketchy was nevertheless impressed by its range commenting that "under their own names or easily recognizable pseudonyms numerous legal lights political sachems millionaires professional liberals and reformers appear either in person or by name" and that "most of New York's institutions and celebrities and notorieties of the past three or four years come in for at least passing comment." .
