Very Good folded in fours tiny tear in top edge at fold. An illustrated WWII psychological warfare pamphlet from the Nazi German government aimed at American soldiers in a slightly warped attempt at vernacular English. The recto features an illustration of city life in America a man and a women merrily strolling through a city past one of the ubiquitous "Uncle Sam Wants You" American propaganda posters of the time with a caption and verso that are meant to appeal to US soldiers' political cynicism and skepticism about American elites' motives. The strolling couple are meant to be some of the "Friendly Folks back home those who stimulated the big war boom eager to collect the prosperous profits." The reader is informed "Your job is easy; You just got to die to fill their pockets." The stilted attempts at slang coupled with the irony of the Nazi government attempting to appeal to Americans' pacifism and anti-elitism make this an entertaining psywar pamphlet that showcases various difficulties of getting inside one's enemies' heads and amplifying their doubts. A curious list of questions designed to prepare demonstrators or debaters for issues they might be challenged with in a public forum. The sheets are undated but appear to be compiled around the time of the Cuban Missle Crisis. No imprint but the preliminary sheet bears the rubber stamp of the Philips Exeter Academy Student Peace Group; it is unclear whether the questions were compiled by the Academy or merely used by them. The questions range from the obvious "Why are you all here" to questions of a more provocative nature "What are you a bunch of commies "Why don't you go back to Russia" and "What would you do if Russia attacks Remember Pearl Harbor". A beautiful ephemeral and very rare angling print on linen.<br/> <br/>At the centre of the print is a Hogarthian scene of an angler in his winter closed-season sitting-room. He is laid-up in his arm-chair with gout his foot rests on a gout stool a toddy warms on the grate above a blazing fire whilst he tries to re-live the long-gone halcyon days of summer by fishing for apples in a large coopered barrel full of water. Scattered around him are the accoutrements of his art: creels nets rods an open fly-case. This image is surrounded by a decorative border of scrolling stylised foliage. Beyond this is a surround of 13 ovals each with a picture of a different British freshwater fish giving the fish's name and the season when it can be fished joined to these ovals are shaped 'labels' that give brief details of where and when each fish is to be found what time of day it should be fished for and which hooks and flies/bait should be used. The outermost rectangular border includes the title an oval portrait of Sir Izaak Walton at each corner and a series of shaped boxes containing details of flies and baits under the headings 'Flies' 'Pastes' 'Worms' and 'Fishes and Insects'. Sir Izaak Walton 1595-1683 was the author of the most famous book on fishing and a classic of English literature: The Compleat Angler ; or the Contemplative Man's Recreation. It was written during the horrific English Civil War and was Walton's attempt to draw attention to the benevolence of a simple virtuous life. unknown books

Very good in black cloth covered boards with the gilt text nearly completely faded on the spine and with a color printed label on the front board which shows only light rubbing at its edges and a few minor light scratches to its surface. An octavo measuring 8 7/8" by 6". There is a gift inscription with the prior owner's name and date of "Jan. 2 1928" on the first free end page. Without its very scarce issued dust jacket. 430 pages followed by two pages of ads by the publisher. "With over one hundred illustrations and decorations by Louis Rhead". A very worthy copy of an uncommon children's classic. The hinges joints and binding are all tight and there are no loose pages or errant marks such as scribbling. Harper & Brothers hardcover books

As complete and thorough a confectionery book as was published in America in the 19th Century. The author claims these "receipts are from the best New York Philadelphia and Boston Confectioners and include a large number from the French and other foreign nations." though much of it was sourced from Francatelli's Royal Cook and Confectioner London 1862 with twenty-six of forty-four chapters reprinted verbatim though assembled in a different order. Included are sections on candy bon-bons jellys ices fruit compotes nougats tinctures essential oils and colorants. Text block a bit shaken but sound and clean; in gilt-decorated brown cloth chipped at head of spine but otherwise bright and near very good.
