1780265361780. Pastel on laid watermarked paper. The sheet retains signs of having been stretched as these types of portraits typically were. Dampstain upper right corner tear lower right corner otherwise excellent condition. A strikingly well done portrait of a successful European gentleman with piercing eyes. Pastel portraits were popular in Europe Great Britain and America during most of the 18th century especially in the 1770s and 80s. They provided a more rapid way of rendering a likeness in bright colors that didn't yellow. This was a golden age for portrait painting which exemplified the optimistic views of the Enlightenment: a sitter was not ashamed to show his or her wealth contentment or character. Our self -assured subject looks directly at the viewer with piercing eyes calm practical not likely to be fooled. It is an astounding accomplishment; we feel that this was exactly how he was. The artist allowed himself or herself there were a number of excellent female pastel portraitists particularly in France to be subject entirely to what was seen and sensed about this strong indomitable personality. Unsigned Intriguing and Possibly Secret Manuscript Note Concerning the Treaty of Paris 1782-1783

030078No Binding. Very Good. small folio one page formerly folded top edge lightly browned else very good. Text neatly inscribed in ink on laid paper. The sheet judging from the fold marks was evidently folded into a very small triangle of just over an inch in size possibly for easy concealment and transmittal. he present document is both intriguing and curious it discusses the Treaty of Paris and contains information which poses several intriguing questions: the document states that Peace would be signed on the 19th at six o'clock in the evening and with conditions which differed somewhat from the terms of the final treaty. The preliminary articles of peace were not signed until November 30 1782 the final Treaty ending the War was signed on September 3 1783. The terms mentioned in this manuscript differ from the final document. This treaty between Great Britain and the United States marked the final consummation of American independence. Coincidentally were signed peace treaties between Great Britain and each of two other belligerents France the ally of the United States and Spain the ally of France. A preliminary peace between Great Britain and the Netherlands no one's ally had been signed on September 2 1783. The definitive treaties marked the end of a complicated negotiation in Paris between Great Britain and her several enemies begun in March 1782 by the Rockingham Ministry and continued by the government of Lord Shelburne through its agent Richard Oswald who had conducted the American negotiation from the first and other British diplomatic officers. It was featured by the separately negotiated preliminary and conditional articles of peace between the United States and Great Britain signed Nov. 30 1782 which were not to go into effect until peace should be signed between the American ally France and the common enemy Great Britain. France in turn deferred her peace until her ally Spain should have also reached a settlement with Great Britain. The French and Spanish preliminaries were signed on Jan. 2 1783 on which date the American preliminaries went into effect and a general armistice took place pending signature of a final and definitive treaty of peace. The three sets Anglo-American Anglo- French and Anglo-Spanish of preliminary articles of peace were thus in the nature of armistice agreements which accompanied a cessation of hostilities but did not end the legal state of war. The definitive treaties which ended the war were deferred for several months in the hope of securing more concessions from the British and to give the Dutch time to make a satisfactory peace with Great Britain. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 13 1/2 x 19 inches. A wonderful continental view in the grand tradition of the romantic landscape. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst artists and printmakers which sought to visually record the natural beauties of their surroundings. English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles and on the Continent. Theses image not only inspired a sense of national pride but also served as cherished mementos for eager collectors on the "Grand Tour". Prints and paintings of Ruins and antiquities were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a reminder of their travels or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. This is a wonderful example of a picturesque eighteenth century landscape print. By trimming the image within the platemark and mounting it on a decorative washline background the print has the effect of a landscape painting. The likeness is heightened by the addition of added body colour in the image and the use of a heavy painterly technique of engraving. This practice was common amongst engravers and printsellers who wished to capitalize on this trend for picturesque landscapes. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints. Very rare Spanish legal document concerning tithes certified between the Archbishop of Granada Alonso Bernardo de los Rios y Guzman served 1677-92 and the Prior of the Carthusian monastery of Granada. While the text offers a fascinating and surprisingly detailed account of this ecclesiastical suit and is especially rich in prosopographical material the work is primarily of importance for its early copperplate engraving of the Virgin of Atocha depicted as the miraculous patroness of Madrid. The revered statue a wooden carving now thought to date from the thirteenth century is here depicted clothed in its golden baroque regalia and crowned with radiating halos for centuries the Virgin accrued the rich votive offerings of royal visitors. Housed in the Basilica de Neustra Señora de Atocha in Madrid the Virgin was long especially favored by the kings and queens of Spain and her presence on the title of this legal document functions as a manner of royal certification the text ends with the printed approval of Carlos II here simply "YO EL REY". OCLC and KVK locate only one copy of this text that housed at the Universidad de Sevilla. Not in Palau; the present copy collates with the Seville copy. unknown books

He would become known for his superb craftsmanship and his "Columbus Landing in America" centennial meerschaum masterpiece which took two years to produce and was exhibited at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.
