His parents lost a beloved son and the Sunday-school a valuable teacher and society a useful member. There was much energy in his character which promised to be very beneficial to mankind. He was a very active member of the committee of the Bible Association. He regularly collected from several of its districts and from the workmen of the manufactory where he was employed as clerk; he obtained upwards of forty subscribers to the Bible Society since April last." <br /><br />The supposedly biographical account of the deathbed conduct and conversations of a pious 17-year-old confident in his new birth in Jesus and full of parting counsel for his younger siblings etc. with a remarkable coda as narrated by the departed young man from beyond: <br /><br />"You remember me when I wore an earthly form and spoke to you in human language. Many of you followed my body to the grave and wept as you saw my coffin committed to the ground. My spirit dwells not there. Through the riches of the Savior's love and the power of his grace I have reached the skies." <br /><br />The anticipation here in voice and approach to the trance medium messages from later Spiritualist accounts is not far to seek suggesting that the language of spirit communication may have awaited only the scientific explanations of mesmerism trance clairvoyance etc. to become empirical truths rather than simply theological allegories. OCLC suggests two locations AAS Free Library of Philadelphia plus the OCLC FAST Project--a location one half-suspects is as insubstantial as the nature of spiritual communication itself. <br /><br />Some light foxing and soiling and wear; a very good copy. The printing house of Jordi Roca and Gaspar was active in the latter years of the 18th century; its tradition of printing topical works continued at least until the 1830s under the helm of Agustín Rocas widow. Agustín Roca published clandestine leaflets during the Napoleonic invasion and was forced to flee to Tarragona and Mallorca. According to Palau the pamphlets pertaining to both the 1802 and 1827 festivities were issued separately as well as in the collected editions found here. Second Improved Edition; First Edition. Two works bound as one. The first consists of a general guide to making all kinds of vinegars from different sources and for differing purposes. Domestic and commercial production of these useful ferments are discussed including unusual applications e.g. as perfume bases. The second part is a complement to the first item in that the author discusses the production of various sources for initiating fermentation especially those utilized in alcoholic distillation. Overall age-toning and some stains. The last four pages of advertisements of the second item removed at binding. In contemporary paste paper boards. Worn at extremities paper spine label partially worn away. Good or a bit better. A small attractive nineteenth century ownership stamp on a blank portion of the title page of the first item. Neat ownership signature to front fly "Ex Libris m. Schmitt". Additional pencil ownership inscription to front paste down locating the book in Harrisburg Penn. The autograph notes are bound in place with additional blanks after each item. Rare. OCLC locates no copies of the first part and just seven copies of the second none in North America. G. Texts clean and unmarked bindings still quite sound overall. Good. Two volume set. 459 1 pp; pp 3 - 480. Illustrated with a total of 7 b/w plates and maps multiple engraved portraits to some plates. Plates published by T. Rogerson. 8vo. 9" x 5-1/2" <br/><br/>Text appears to be the same as that in Baines' History of the Wars of the French Revolution published by Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown the same year albeit with a slightly different title and with attribution to Baines. The Longman edition may have been preceded by an edition in parts advertised as "The Cheapest History of the Wars" in the Literary Gazette London: Henry Colburn 1817 and first published on March 1st by Simpkin and Marshall and Sherwood and Co. and sold by T. Rogerson. This edition bears the pronounced error of the "1792" on the title pg of Vol I being printed as "1793" on Vol. II's title page. The work Baines' first -- significant portions of which were later found to have been lifted verbatim from an earlier history by Alexander Stephens -- was wildly popular upon publication and would have likely been in high demand in any form; it was reissued as part of Baines' larger work on George III published in 1820. Expertly rebacked to match original cloth a bit faded along extremities; frontispiece heavily foxed recent bookseller label to front pastedown else Very Good and sound. Errata slip bound in rear. With numerous contemporary holograph corrections throughout most likely made in preparation of the second edition as many are of a semantic rather than purely factual nature for example on p. 12 lines 2 and 3 from the bottom the text reads: ".figures of the poverty-stricken music-professors of Heilbronn haunted their imaginations". A second edition was published by the London firm of C. & H. Senior in 1840 published under the authorship of a John Sayer and revised by "a lady intimately acquainted for a long period with the circumstances of Mr. Eulenstein's life by whom a few additional facts have been supplied." Whether the annotations in this copy are in Sayer's Welsh's Senior's or the lady's hand is unclear. Traces of a contemporary inscription on original pastedown now obscured by new pastedown would potentially reveal the original owner. Short biographical sketch of the popular German musician Charles or Carl/Karl Eulenstein 1802-1890 whose performances gained him celebrity in Great Britain in the late 1820s and whose preferred instrument the Jews' harp Eulenstein also played the guitar is described on p. 1 as both "eminently beautiful" and in a quotation in a footnote more dissonant than "the creaking of hinges or the mewing of cats." Etymologically the Jews' Harp is not in fact a Jewish musical tradition but a corruption of "Jaw's Harp" one of the oldest known musical instruments dating as far back in China as the 4th century B.C.
