Original dark blue covers string-bound Japanese style fukuro toji with the pink printed paper title labels. A nice 18th century edition of this work in good impression. Originally published in the 1720's. Though the artist is unnamed several candidates have been mentioned including Ooka Shumboku. 18th century editions of Toba-e books are becoming increasingly uncommon. In a custom clasped chitsu case. The covers are worn but overall a good copy of this book. An excellent example of the somewhat madcap humor of the Toba-e genre. With a bookseller's advertisement at the end which indicates this edition of the book was part of a series of Toba-ehon brought out by the same publisher - SANGOKUSHI OGI NO MATO and TOBA GURUMA. unknown books

No man of ordinary observation can pass through the streets of New York or Philadelphia without meeting numerous living witnesses of the misery which exists in both of those cities and especially in the former. Enough can be seen in Boston to make any benevolent heart ache daily for suffering humanity. But still the amount is less in proportion to population than in either of the other two cities. Through the influence of better laws for education intellectual culture the best preservative from vice and crime is more generally diffused in Boston than in Philadelphia; and from its geographical position Boston is not like New York the common resort of the squalid poverty that seeks refuge on our shores from Europe." A fairly nuanced sociological criminal and economic argument for temperance among the laboring classes pointing to the savings in cost of drinks and to the economic advantages of sober fathers; additional aspersions are cast as well on adulteration of wines and liquors. Originally published as a series in Boston Daily Times here collected and published with a prefatory Advertisement dated May 1841 and signed by a committee of Boston advocates of temperance. 179820048Newburyport: Printed by Angier March 1802 & 1798. <br /><br />Two pamphlets stitched together into contemporary unbleached heavy cartridge paper 8 x 5 inches 14 2; 18 pages. The second title is completely untrimmed. Stated eleventh edition of the first title; first edition of the second. <br /><br />"Therefore my child as a good soldier of Jesus Christ gird up the loins of your mind." The first title was originally published in Boston in 1746 and seems to have been something of an evergreen bit of piety; it was relatively soon after this that it was picked up as an American Tract Society title. This edition concludes with two poems "The Advantages of Early Religion" and "Thoughts on God and Death." <br /><br />The somewhat more uncommon second title seems only to have been published in this edition; the tentative publication date is assigned by Evans. This copy of the <i>Letter from a Father</i> is bound without the final three blank leaves. March was a fairly active printer bookseller newspaper publisher and circulating library proprietor in Newburyport. <i>American Imprints</i> 2504 <i>Letter from a Solicitous Mother</i>; Evans 33994 <i>Letter from a Father</i>. <br /><br />With the ink ownership inscription to the title page of the first title of Abigail Moulton a name seemingly common enough in Newburyport of that period. Boards worn and a little darkened but the images are clear and intact; very good copy. 12mo original blue cloth backed pictorial boards. Frontispiece vignette title three plates and one vignette. Four pages of advertisements. A scarce work of fiction for young adults with a dual moral lesson about the poor in which the anonymous author attributes their misery to the surplus of labor caused by mechanization. The "increasing depravity of the lower orders" is a result of economic forces not moral turpitude. Noted on page 175 of Alistair Johnston's "Zephyrus Image: A Bibliography" who notes "10 1/4 x 14 3/4" 12 page book sewn into brown Tweedweave cover "printed on Bergstrom papers at Hermes Free Press in San Francisco Spring 1972" Centaur type in brown on cover. This book assigns specific endangered plants and animals to each U.S. Senator. Originally in printed manila envelope lacking with this copy. One copy was mailed to each U.S. Senator. Rob Rusk writes . The Totem Protectorates appeared in another issue of Place magazine half on the inside front cover and half on the inside back cover - the Neon Rose issue - tho I'm unsure whether it was photocopied or reset". Interestingly neither the Morgan bibliography of Ginsberg or the McNeil bibliography of Snyder makes mention of this independent piece. Only four copies located in O.C.L.C. Although the print run is unstated according again to Johnston the typical Zephyrus Image publications were generally produced in small quantities perhaps 100 to 200 copies. Scarce item.
