In Dog Latin and English. A long-gone ceremony of UC Berkeley students the "Burial of Bourdon and Minto" was based on a similar tradition at Yale University. It was held annually from 1878 until 1903 and revolved around freshmen burning their textbook copies of Louis Pierre Marie Bourdon's "Elements of Algebra" and William Minto's "Manual of English Prose Composition." It also featured the ceremonial burrial of the ashes. Over the years the process became more elaborate and included a mourners' procession and a bonfire. When the festivities began spilling outside the campus onto residential streets and more and more often students became injured the university administration cancelled the ceremony. The current leaflet was the invitation to the event meant to be passed around among the students. Written mostly in Dog Latin it also included a poem in English part of which read: "Oh dog-eared and mangled Minto / Oh Bourdon our fated foe / You are lost and gone forever / Down to Hell's deep pit below." 19730N.p. Chicago: 1969. Original silk-screened poster in three colors 23" x 29". Browned at margins but image area bright and clean. Archivally hinged to acid-free backing in gallery frame. Brian Flanagan b. 1946 was a member of both SDS and the Weathermen and directly connected to the fatal Greenwich Village apartment explosion in which three Weathermen were killed while preparing for a bomb attack on Fort Dix Flanagan had reputedly left the apartment briefly for more supplies. This extremely rare poster promotes Flanagan's parodic write-in campaign for Mayor of Chicago during the Days of Rage. Following a fateful run-in with City Attorney Richard Elrod on the streets of Chicago in which Elrod was left with a broken neck and partial paralysis Flanagan was tried for attempted murder and inciting mayhem. He was eventually acquitted on all charges but the case became a cause celebre for the Weathermen and other radical left groups. An extremely ephemeral piece likely produced in tiny quantities and posted even less. unknown books

The background imitates an embossed brass plaque. Below is a quotation of Wilson's: "The time has come to conquer or submit.for us there is but one choice. We have made it." This patriotic call to duty is accompanied by an appeal for the public to buy bonds of Second Liberty Loan subscriptions of which ran from October 1 until and ended October 27 1917.
