1851292813London: David Bogue Fleet Street 1851. Second Edition. Three Quarters Leather. Very Good binding. One hundred years ago this Christmas 2020 this book was given as "A Christmas Present 1920 to young Charles E. Lauriat 3rd with very kindly thoughts and wishes from Herbert E. Root London England". We hope that Master Charles Lauriat found the book as delightful as we do. It was issued "With twenty illustrations drawn from the stuffed animals contributed by Hermann Ploucquet of Stuttgart to the Great Exhibition" -- "one of the cleverest and most popular displays in the Great Exhibition". The illustrations are colored by hand.~~Rebound by Root and Sons of London in three-quarter blue calf double ruled at the edges over blue polished linen; raised bands with decorations and titling in gilt; marbled endpapers. The joints are tender but are holding well.~~The binder Herbert Root inscribed this copy to the son of American publisher Charles Lauriat Estes and Lauriat of Boston. At the bottom of the upper board Root stamped the monogram of young Master Lauriat "C. E. L. 3rd."~~The original cloth cover of the upper board is bound in at the front of the book. This Second Edition was issued with twenty plates; the First had but fourteen. The plates of this special edition are greatly enhanced by the hand-coloring. Very Good binding.
