18031261Paris: Barba Delaunay Cavanagh Les Marchands de Nouveautes & Tiger 1803. Hardcover. Very good. Dates: 1803-1824. 16mo. together 5 works in one volume: 144 pp 179 pp 160 pp 122 pp 108 pp. each work accompanied by an engraved frontispiece of which 2 are hand-colored some fraying along outer edges. Bound in contemporary French half basane over marbled boards a little worn but suitable for exhibition and study. Highly curious Sammelband of five "Ana" an important genre of late-18th and early 19th century French literature today little known and under-appreciated by academics. At that time EVERYONE read Ana even the critics who excoriated these fugitive pieces of literary ephemera while secretly delighting in their unabashed "bad taste." Concerning Ana Mornet correctly states: "One misunderstands the history of French thought in the 18th-century if one confines it to the history of strictly literary genres . In the provinces especially far from the theater the opera and the fashionable salons when one ceases to be ignorant and indifferent." Mornet judges that the genre of Ana is particularly responsible for assembling useless fragments of knowledge without a greater plan. He qualifies Ana as "crumbs of science" "empty and puerile curiosities" "and chatter." Modern academics ignore Ana at their peril. Once ubiquitous many of them are now very scarce as they were read and reread by audiences all over French and soon discarded. Ana serve to inform us about French language and culture high and low in the broadest possible way. A very balanced account of the history and significance of Ana is given by Jennifer Tsein The Bad Taste of Others: Judging Literary Value in Eighteenth-Century France 2012 pp. 173-174 with references to Daniel Mornet's Histoire De La Clarte Francaise 1929.

¶ CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION: 1. 1923002543Los Angeles: S. n. by the author 1923. First Edition. Very good. Advertising broadside; 14 x 8 1/2; cream stock printed in black; several old fold lines; a bit of age-toning to verso; very good condition. At first sight published by an anonymous supporter the broadside was quite obviously released by Householder himself whom advertised a "free name analysis" for anybody who would buy his book "The Four Basic Principles of Numerology" which was in turn published under the name Frank Householder. Although not much is known about him he claimed he was the World's Greatest Numerologist and worked in the Los Angeles area in the early 20th century. The broadside assured people they would have their soul number and name vibration harmonized and would live a life of privilege. It also contained a convenient order form for the book. S. n. 004614Quarter Calf. Wood Boards. . Very Good. Could this be an unabashed gay celebration from the Thirties Here with a single exception only men are presented and in two images with a suggestion of intimacy and elsewhere with a constructivist-style muscularity that somehow also brings to mind Tom of Finland the pioneer in depicting hyper-masculine muscle men among them sailors and dock worker-types the specific subject matter of this unpublished unfinished manuscript. And the one exception with a woman in the illustration depicts what could be depicted as dissention between the muscular man and the diminutive girlfriend. N.d. circa 1930. Folio. 33 by 24 cm. 4 9-35 pp. The songs represented here include "Whiskey for My Johnny" "Paddy Doyle" "Across Western Ocean" "Poor Old Joe" "One Day More" "Banks of the Sacramento" "Blow the Man Down" "Captain Kidd" "It's Time for us to Leave Her Johnny" and a few songs without the title written in. Even with the gaps in illustration title or text the work delivers a strong punch and there is absolutely nothing tentative or sketchy about what is present. This was done by someone with a clear vision and testament to that is that the leaves are a Normandy Vellum France paper which is both a heavy and luxuriant stock. The paper was in common use between 1915 to 1925 anchoring our dating. However we believe the aesthetic is late twenties to early thirties. Also included are two separate sheets with three pages of pencil sketches with some red watercolor employed in one of the drawings for the artwork presumably that did not get entered into the book.

hardcover books
19000000268Germany 1900. 4to 23.0 x 30.9 cm. Original quarter black pebble cloth and green paperboards in very good condition. Collation: 30 stiff gray paper leaves sewn to backing. Each leave has12 red ink rectangles in three horizontal rows on each side. The upper portion of each seed packet is glued to the gray paper within an individual red ink margin. Each packet has a printed number at the top and complete taxonomic name beneath the flower image. There are 651 seed packets in alphabetical order glued to both sides of each of 27 leaves and the first row of the 28th leaf. The remaining leaves have culture information for each of 292 plants representative of those illustrated on the seed packets. The culture information for each genus is printed on small squares of paper glued in alphabetical order to the stiff gray paper. Each packet has chromolithograph image on each side. The front has the flower and the back has an image of the entire plant. All packets are in very good condition.

Collection of seed packets with chromolithograph images of plants and flowers. This is an exceptional and scarce collection of early printed seed packets collected in a single volume. It is likely that a traveling salesman in Germany would present such an album to nurseries to illustrate the available seeds for ordering. Most of the plants are annuals or biennials. This album is in very good condition and probably not used in the field. This suggests that it may have been for reference in a seed company's office. hardcover books
